TaeKwonDoDo 0 #1 September 13, 2003 I'm going to phoenix next week on SWA and will be bringing my rig. The thread w/Q's on the effect of 911 made me think I should ask if there are any issues with bringing my rig onto the plane... Do I check it in? Can I carry it on? (Can you see the look of the faces of the people around me looking at me as I put my rig in the overhead?) Do I need to declare that my cypress (has an explosive charge) is with me (if I get it back in time from its service). Sure there aren't too many issues I need to worry about, but if I don't ask and show up at the counter, I'll guarantee there will be at least one (I'm the guy in the checkout line at the grocery store you DON'T want to be behind). Hazarrd 1 #3 September 13, 2003 Do I need to declare that my cypress (has an explosive charge) Yes, make sure you tell them the thing is full of explosives, they usually don't mind. Definitely search for posts on this. The 1 time I flew with my rig (last month) they didn't say anything the first leg of the trip and the second leg they asked for my Cypres card and they waived me through. I accidently had my hook knife with me, and they didn't even say anything. .-.
freeflydrew 0 #4 September 13, 2003 http://uspa.org/news/current_news/carryons.htm Carry it on, explain the rig's components, don't let them pull the handles, if they get sketched out show them that the cypress turns on and off, let the know that you're a member of the UNITED STATES parachute association and the FAA has made it very clear that Sport parachutes are totally safe and allowed as carry on in commercial flight, be super friendly, smile... (If they detect explosives on the rig with the swab test, they HAVE to open the reserve) Carry a printout from the link above, and a copy of the following document:http://uspa.org/news/images/TSA_ltr_to_USPA.pdf -drew
drenaline 0 #5 September 13, 2003 Carry it on inside a bag (only the parachute inside that bag). Don't tell them things they are not asking. If the ask what is that, tell them that its a parachute; if they ask what is that thing with wires that appears on the xray tell them its an automatic opener. if you mention the word "explosive" inside an airport you will most probably go to jail. canopywhore 0 #6 September 14, 2003 I just flew through PHX last week. Look at the USPA website. I followed there advice and had no problems. I traveled with my rig in a plain suitcase with no markings. I made sure I didn't pack a hook knife or a closing tool. I did make sure I had a pull up cord in case I needed to close my rig back up. I waited for the line at the TSA to dry up and I went through. I quietly told the TSA that I had a parachute in the bag. They didn't give me any trouble and commented on my cooperation. I printed out all of the info on the uspa site and put it in my bag, but I never needed to explain anything. Good LuckPs I don't have a cypres.
dbattman 0 #7 September 15, 2003 Quick answers from a roadwarrior veteran. Only if you watch it getting scanned and lock the case afterwards, if you want to and PUT IT IN A FRIGGIN BAG!!!!!, no- keep your mouth shut.

Agree ..... Flew continental and northwest this past weekend from Nashville into Colorado Springs. We carried on two rigs, one in a suitcase and one in a backpack. Absolutely no problems in Nashville. Upon our return flight, I did see a questionable face when it was scanned, however we were already the lucky ones to be chosen by our friends with the FAA. Obviously our rigs were discovered. With quick search expressing no concern and a pleasant, 'have a good flight' we were on our way. don't worry, be polite, and have a good trip
