Holding the Wings

Recommended Posts

Tom, I occasionally fly holding my wingtips on my SkyFlyer, but only when I launch (no real reason why), and when I want to "pop" up to catch a floater. I think the wingtip toggles Fordy mentions are a good tool for BASE and technical personal record-setting. As someone who generally flies with people in "lesser" suits, I really don't have much cause to use them.

Yo !

I hold the wingtips pretty much all the time - it seems to improve the flight a bit. I have also tried small wingtip handles (pullup cord loops) but cut them off and settled on small tabs left over from these handles. Basically anything you can grab and hold helps - you don't use much force to hold the wingtips.

bsbd!

Yuri.

I played with my initial modification and had a loop that went over the back of my hand from the wrist to the wing tip, worked very well.. my only concern was if on deployment i pulled the pc through the loop i may have had a page to myself in the Darwin awards[:/]... john loken (skyflyer from Sweden) has semi rigid inserts down the edge of the wing that he picks up with thumb and forefinger... works nicely, so i have re-moded and it works just as well with less chance for problems on deployment... either way, wingtip flying gives better lift IMHO... BUT!! you can't see your alti!!:S because your hand points the other way

Well, since I don't wear an alti anyway, I guess that should be ok.;)

I've definitely noticed that you can hear a wingtip fluttering (flapping) noise when a skyflyer isn't holding the tips. Several people have commented on hearing that kind of noise during my flights when I am not holding the tips.

I really need to get some airplane time to iron out my technique.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this.

I made two nice flights from 1700' last night, holding the wingtips. It definitely helped make my flights smoother. It also eliminated that crazy "flutter" noise, which was both quite loud (always bad, considering the cirumstances) and rather disconcerting.

Now, if only I could get flying sooner. :D
