FrogNog 1 #26 April 7, 2005 QuoteYeah, I guess I agree. My recalcitrant hornet was probably a friday afternoon canopy, although the one I have borrowed is a bit dodgy too. Yeah yeah, I know what your thinking, I can't pack worth shit. But the same thing has happened when 3 other people packed it, and the same thing has happened to the poor chap that bought it off me. I have also read lots of posts on her about spankings from a Hornet. Luck of the draw I say What size is your Hornet? If it's large enough for me and you have another canopy you can jump in the meantime, I'd be willing to try my hand at it. I'd offer a temporary trade, but if your Hornet really is a meanie, I'm afraid you wouldn't trade back. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
adamsr 0 #27 April 7, 2005 I bought my Hornet 190 straight off student status, and now have about 200 jumps on the canopy, I love my hornet and since i started Psycho packing haven't had any hard openings. I love the performance and it has a powerful flare making the canopy easy to land. Reference to SCR10480 comments, the hornet is NOT like the Sabre, it is almost identical to the Sabre2 (but bought out a couple of years before the sabre2), which even though the name is similar, is a completely different canopy. I have jumped a sabre2 170 which i found pretty similar to my hornet, although a bit quicker due to the 20 square foot drop in size. Only thing wrong with my hornet, which i'm going to get fixed at the next reserve pack is the length of the brake lines. This is due to line shrinkage, but has caused tension in the brakes lines even at full drive, increasing front riser pressure and making the canopy buffet a bit under front riser input. Oh and lets not forget the very simple but great idea of the colour coded line acctchments on the canopy, making pro packing a breeze!
steve1 5 #28 April 10, 2005 My hornet 170 was opening too hard when it was new. Since then I started psycho packing, rolling the nose, and my openings have been consistently on heading and soft. I love mine....Steve1
davidfreefly 0 #29 July 19, 2006 im jumping a hornet 150. JUST AMAZING CANOPY!!!! soft openings, fast turns and amazing swoops. JUST A GREAT CANOPY ________________________ DAVID DOVAL www.paracaidismogalicia.com
darrenspooner 0 #30 July 20, 2006 In fairness, what I should say is that the second Hornet 150 I borrowed was completely tamed after I started shoving the nose in towards the back on the pack job. First few jumps it spanked me, after that a beauty. The first one I had was just a dog!
peckerhead 0 #31 July 21, 2006 QuoteOh yes! If you find a good one get it. Even though they (Hornets) are no longer produced, Aerodyne Research supports them...fully. Aerodyne still makes Hornets.....They just changed the name to Pilot. Definetly not a copy of the sabre though. I have a Hornet 135 and I would have to say it is my favorite canopy of all time. Hornets are becoming hard to find and a pilot costs much more. Plus the pilots are being made with that new slickety-snot fabric and the Hornets were made from that wonderful South African Z-P. Much easier to pack. I have never jumped a canopy that had better openings than my Hornet. If you can find one Buy it!

Hornet-190 (her name is Brunhilde ;) ) loaded 1:1 its a sweet ride, but you ask her for more and BANG! she will give you more. i have a question, the big slider with the big groomets, sometimes wants to stick around half way, nothing scarry, just pull on the aft risers and down it comes but, is it normal? sometimes all the way to my head lolll. thanks fellas Paraloco.Love the smell of jet fuel in the morning :)
 gunsmokex 1 #42 June 25, 2016 Hmm no your slider should not regularly get hung up. I jump a Hornet as well loaded at about 1:1 or so although I just had a new line set installed and the rigger replaced my slider grommets as well. I'd start there. Mine is the 2001 version and has the big slider as well. I'm glad you like your Hornet though the more I jump mine the more I learn about it. I had some line twist problems with mine but I think it was my packing skills, either way I got it figured out whatever it was but I don't think it was the canopies fault though. Its great for long spots though if you get on the rear risers. However someone mentioned above it does have kind of a flat trajectory, it takes a little bit of getting used to but its all that I know besides the student canopies that I used. I like it though, mines named "Skunk".
 Prev 1 2 Next Page 2 of 2 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
