SkymonkeyONE 4 #5 July 9, 2003 I am not sure of any NORCAL BM-I's, but with over 500 jumps and having someone experienced to hook the rig up for you and give you pointers, you should be OK on your own. That said, real BM-I's have proven themselves capable of proper instruction and can offer corrective action in flight as well as on the ground. If you have the money now, I can promise you that you would not regret the purchase of a BirdMan suit now, so long as you don't get a suit that would get you in over your head. A classic, classic II, or GTi would be a fine choice as a first suit. Chuck BM-I (among other things)
ManBird 0 #6 July 9, 2003 I bought mine without instruction, and I still managed to make skyflying my principle discipline. I recommend instruction at some point, though, to make sure you're flying it right. I waited too long to get mine."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

andy2 0 #8 July 10, 2003
I'd recommended a GTI for a first suit.
Why? Because its safe for a beginner to practice on, or because the WS flyer would be able to push it to further limits than a classic? Just curious on your reasoning. I understand the S3 to be too radical of a suit until one has a lot of experience. I thought the GTi was more suited to a mildly experienced person. Are there people that fly in GTis for the first flight? Birdman obviously recomends you buy a classic, then a GTi, and then a S3, but I kinda think thats because they want to sell suits (which is understandable) --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm... kevin922 0 #9 July 10, 2003 Well first of all I learned on a gti, jari put me on one for my first suit - it isn't too much to handle. After flying the gti a good bit i've realized it is a pretty safe suit, it isn't too agressive and it is somewhat forgiving. I feel if you were to buy a suit it should be a gti as with a classic you will be ready to upgrade soon after you get it. If you can put some jumps on a classic demo or something then that would be good, but i wouldn't recommend buying a classic as your first suit. that's just me though. Because its safe for a beginner to practice on, or because the WS flyer would be able to push it to further limits than a classic? Both. I've never actually jumped a Classic or Classic II (though I'd like to). My first WS jump was on the GTi. It's the perfect mix of safety, forgiveness, and performance. The performance envelope is huge, you can safely take on aerobatics (and instability as the case may be at first) and have no trouble getting your hackey. Once you've got it dialed in a bit, you'll be able to keep that GTi up with Skyflyers on a flocking dive, without them compensating their flight very much (I do about 52 down on my GTi, and most flocking dives involving skilled Skyflyer flyers are kept around 50 - 55, though their forward speed does outweigh the GTi's rather significantly). I'm pretty dang sure the GTi will stay with you all across your skyflying career. You have to fly it differently than the Skyflyer/S3 in order to max it out. It's an entirely different sensation that you'll return to even after you get into the bigger suits. I still do. Definitely steer clear of the Skyflyer or S3 until you've put, at a bare minimum, 50 jumps on a GTi or Classic. They are beasts that will bite your ass if you don't know how to fly them (but they are also your best friends when you figure them out)."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
blair700 0 #11 July 10, 2003 YO! I'm a rookie skyflyer with just shy of 30 jumps on my GTI, I've never jumped anything else, and after talking with some experienced Birds, and the manufacturer, I decided to purchase the GTI instead of the classic as my first suit. I've felt very comfortable with the characteristics/performance of the suit since the first flight. I've learned alot on the suit in just 30 jumps, but most importantly I've learned that the suit has a much larger potential that I've not even tapped yet. Its a great first suit, like Manbird said though, it can bite, I lost control last weekend for the first time, but do what you're trained to do (in a BM class) and you can get back on top of it. Have fun! Blair
PhreeZone 20 #12 July 10, 2003 I picked up a used Classic II and have put 3 jumps on it so far. I was able to keep up with GTI's on my 2nd flight and was getting speeds in the upper 60mph range on the 3rd jump. I so can not wait to see what this suit is really capible of. I can see upper to mid 50's as a reasonble speed even on the Classic. All of the suits can play with the most sinky of the suits so its all good.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
