skreamer 1 #3 July 29, 2003 Quote"I'm my own plane," said the Austrian-born Felix Baumgartner, who will don an aerodynamic jump suit with 6ft carbon-fibre wing strapped to his back for the attempt. If he is his own plane then why doesn't he fly his hang-glider to '30 000? (edited to add) Just read the following from BBC article : Quote"I want to be known as the God of the Skies," he told the Telegraph." Hmm...

ManBird 0 #7 July 29, 2003 No, the Skyray is his wing, not himself. Cool as the Skyray is, it is not human body flight. I'm pretty sure he'd be able to get a better glide ratio from a wingsuit, and then would actually be able to make the human body flight claim. I'd still call the Skyray an "assisted" flight... it's a composite wing that cannot be formed by body movement. A couple quotes from him: "I'm my own plane. I'll be using no engine, just perfect aerodynamics and my skills," he told the Daily Telegraph. "I want to be known as the God of the Skies." If he really has to rely on his skills, then I wish him a great deal of luck. Felix Baumgartner is one of the most arrogant, self-absorbed bastards in the sport. There are so many jumpers out there doing FAR more than him, yet he always sees himself as the best. He gets out there and does some stuff, but doesn't do it all that well. He caters to the whuffo and disregards his piers. He's also once said if and when he goes in, he wants a museum of his "accomplishments" to be built. I will say this though, if he does cross the English channel, this will indeed open quite a bit up in terms of human flight. Because if he can do it, anyone can. Even if his skills are going up, his ego is definitely not going down."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

skreamer 1 #13 July 30, 2003 If he does spend ten minutes in the sky with his hang-glider before deploying a parachute, will this count as a new world record for time spent in freefall? Don't see that it should because it is assisted (but then the last record was set wearing a wing-suit). Anyway, I'm sure 10 minutes is not a world record for the longest hang-glider flight... ManBird 0 #14 July 30, 2003 Wingsuit flying is still considered human body flight, because you shape the wing with your body. The Skyray is a rigid wing that cannot be shaped by movement. Would still love to try one, though."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
skreamer 1 #15 July 30, 2003 QuoteWingsuit flying is still considered human body flight So if it is flight then it shouldn't be considered for a freefall record? Just playing devil's advocate here. But I agree with you, I don't think that Buzz Lightyear launching himself from a plane to Infinity (we wish) and beyond should qualify for any freefall records.
quade 4 #16 July 30, 2003 Also, remember the distiction the FAI made/makes regarding the Kittenger record. To them it didn't qualify as freefall because of the use of a drouge. He used the drouge for stability.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
ManBird 0 #17 July 30, 2003 Sheesh... semantics. Tracking without a wingsuit is referred to as human body flight. I still say freefall records would apply."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click
ManBird 0 #18 July 31, 2003 In looking to see if he went for it or not, I keep coming across articles that say that his Jesus statue jump (~100 feet) is the lowest BASE jump ever recorded. I'm pretty dang sure this is wrong, being that I've seen video of sub-100 ft BASE jumps on a few occassions. Plus, even though the statue is 100' tall, I don't think that he landed 100' below it. The statue is up on a hill. I believe he jumped from the statue and then landed much further down the hill. It also kind of gives BASE a bad name to go and hop off something like that illegally and then make a point of publicizing it. Though, I must admit, getting up to the statue via grappling hook would be pretty damn fun. Hmmm... it's no surprise that his site goes fullscreen..."¯"`-._.-¯) ManBird (¯-._.-´"¯" Click

SKYRAYALBAN 0 #22 July 31, 2003 Hello everybody! I´m the designer of the SKYRAYs. I discovered that there is a thread about Felix Channel crossing project. It´s a cool platform to clear some stuff up I think. - The SKYRAY IS in fact a device for human body flight!! 60% of the generated Lift comes from the body! I am not sure wether this is less than with most wingsuits. The good glideratio of the SKYRAY comes from the greatly reduced drag not from huge lifting surfaces. Therefore flying with a SKYRAY is totally differnt than Wingsuit flying. It´s much faster! - Felix Baumgartner seems (but I´m not sure) to have crossed the channel with a wing he built as a copy from 2 prototype wings we sold to Red Bull 2 years ago. The only thing he has in his mind is himself and PR for Red Bull. We had problems with his attitude and when he nearly caused a Ramstein II. we split up. - Congratulations for realizing this media-event to him! But he is and will never be the best SKYRAY flyer! He proved this himself! He needet to build a much bigger wing to get the same glideratio like Christoph Aarns or Patrick Barton got with the SKYRAY prototypes! (we have 2 sizes: a small one for daily use and a bigger prototype for testing purposes - both much smaller than Felix glider) ALBAN When you have questions please use info@freesky.de
