gregandtanya 0 #1 March 22, 2004 Hi guys. I have just started to put a second rig together for birdman (talon), it has soft housing on it (I know they are not the best thing to have on an rig), but my queston is will it be ok to just for a while until i get somewhere to change them. As I'm half way between jobs and countries at the moment so things are all over the place. And would like to do some birdman jumps with some friends when I get to England. Thanks for all your help. Main is a beta 115 (square)If you don't look up now and again, you will miss what 's coming down
LouDiamond 1 #2 March 22, 2004 Quotemy queston is will it be ok to just for a while until i get somewhere to change them. Main is a beta 115 (square) You should be fine as long as you realize that if you spin up it could be very hard or impossible to cut away. If your current canopy is prone to spinning/diving/seeking on opening then I would recommend you find a temp canopy that is more docile to be on the safe side."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
FrogNog 1 #3 March 22, 2004 Nobody needs hard housings until they really need them. -=-=-=-=- Pull.

VectorBoy 0 #5 March 23, 2004 I try not to have any hard and fast rules about gear. But when it comes to your cut away housings my opinion is to have this upgraded asap. I am assuming you are refering to the chanels your cables travel through around the yolk and down through your mudflaps on your container right? As in older gear? If you are only refering to the few inches in your main risers that the extra cable fits into then it goes back to many other personal factors.
riggerrob 643 #6 May 26, 2004 Two separate issues here: soft housings vs. riser inserts. I worked at Rigging Innovations back when they built rigs with soft housings and retro-fitted hard housings to dozens of rigs when problems with difficult cutaways arose. Half of the problems were caused by skydivers installing cutaway cables incorrectly. I have seen dozens of Javelins, Flexons and '94 Talons with mis-routed cutaway cables. I blame this squarely on Sun Path and R.I. who were slow in publishing decent diagrams of cable installation. I am still jumping a Talon 2 with semi-hard housings. It has a hard housing across the back of the neck with soft housings from shoulders to risers. We did not understand the second problem until several years later: cable pinch. When heavily-loaded canopies spin up, they can twist the risers so tight that risers pinch cutaway cables, making it difficult to release the naughty main canopy. In conclusion, soft housings have fallen out of fashion because the average skydiver is not bright enough to install them correctly.
