bergh 0 #1 June 22, 2004 Hi everybody Why is it suggested to have 500 jumps before attempting birdman ? Is it because of lack of movement during opening? Is purely a number to confirm that the person is comfortable in the air ? Or is flying it just that risky ? Cheers_______________________________________ You are unique, just like everybody else ... piisfish 140 #2 June 22, 2004 with 500 jumps you should be more or less comfortable in adding new gear which is not "easy" to use... You might have to deal with very different situations as normal belly flying or tracking, and being very current and with "some" experience can help you reacting more correctly with these new sensations and different moves.. I saw a guy with 2000 jumps and quite current being sooo stoked with the flight he flew straight till deployment altitude... And he was coached...scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
kevin922 0 #3 June 22, 2004 The most critical part of wingsuit flight is pull time, being stable is necessary. If you reach back to pull and end up panicing it is not a good situation. The 200 within the last 1.5 years or 500 total was the number of jumps that was deemed a skydiver was "current" enough to be comfortable with the situations that come up with birdman. Thats not to say that there are plenty of 200 within the last 1.5 year / 500 total jumpers that have no business jumping a wingsuit or some sub 200 jumps that would be fine in one. They are recommendations.
SkymonkeyONE 4 #4 June 22, 2004 A wingsuit is an additional piece of equipment with an additional set of procedures for both regular flight and unusual attitudes. It's for that reason that people without a base level of proficiency in general skydiving don't need to saddle themselves with those additional responsibilities. Same as doing tandems, jumping a board, or any number of other things one could think of. Wingsuits are not difficult to fly under "normal" circumstances. On the contrary, the smaller suits are incredibly simple to fly. It's at opening time and when things go wrong in the air that one's experience kicks in.
