diablo as a main for WS jumps ????????

Recommended Posts

a bit of advice please.
i'm an experienced "low performance" canopy pilot.
2000+ CReW jumps, mostly on Lightnings and F-111 CreW canopies.

i have about 100 jumps on stilletos / monarchs / sabre type canopies.

what is your opinion of using a Diablo loaded at ~ 1.25 for WS jumps?

i have no interest in HP landings.
i'm looking for something that does not tend to spin-up on opening.
Reports i've seen on the Diablo are contradictory regarding opening characteristics.
What a SURPRISE!.

thanks

this summer I had great fun climbing a dry tall pine tree to fish out a "diablo" chopped by a fellow wingsuit flier.
(never got my earned pound of bananas B|)

reason for a chop: spinning line twists possibly due to a less than ideal body position during deployment and/or unmodified javelin container.
W/L: ~1.5 ... just 2 cents

Rule of thumb for canopies you plan on jumping with a wingsuit is, jump something you are used to jumping ALOT.

Jump one that you can let open, all the way from your throw out to full inflation, WITHOUT having to grab the risers and steer through the opening.

Do a search on here, I'm sure it's been discussed before.

I jump a wingsuit, and I also own a Diablo loaded @ 1.2.
The Diablo was my first elliptical. After 60 non-eventful jumps, I had come to the conclusion the warnings about ellipticals were a lot of hype...then came jump number 60.

On opening I had some line twist. No big deal, I started to kick it out. Three seconds later I was on my back, pulling hard G's, and watching the horizon blurring past my feet. You can guess the rest.

Since then I have put a couple hundred more jumps on it, and have had two more exciting openings where I just barely avoided chopping it. Burying one toggle on a Diablo is more fun than any other canopy I've jumped, but I would NEVER jump it with a wingsuit!

I have 60 jumps on a Diablo 135 - loaded 1.6.
I had to cut it away after a bad case of spinning line twists.
The previous owner also had to cut away form spinning line twists.
I would not recommend a Diablo for wing suit jumps.
It is too sensitive during openings.

Roel (who's also on dropzone) jumped a diablo 120 for wingsuit jumps for a while after deciding a tri 135 was too boring. He now jumps a diablo 99.... Don't know how much he weighes but my guess is he loads the 120 at ~1.55 and the 99 at 1.9, or something equally high...

I saw him open once, way lower than me, with a couple linetwists (on the 120). I thought, oh well, see ya! But he get out of the twists, no prob.

So, if you're used to jumping HP canopies and have a lot of jumps, maybe the diablo will work, at least it does for Roel...
But I'm sticking to my spectre 135 and tri 120, although I'd really like a pilot 124 from Santa ;)

Hi,

It depends ... what level of risk do you feel comfortable with?

Go to http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ and search for a movie called lowpull ... I still jump the same canopy. There are a few things to think about if you jumping a fast moving canopy and are a wingsuiter :)

Have fun!
