ove 0 #1 January 18, 2005 With all this high tech, low drag wingsuits, tracksuits and so on will our round bulkey helmets cause drag that affects flight? Any hightech helmets out there, like speedskiing-, velodrom bicycling helmets? Is it likely to cause any differense? doable? Do, or do not. There is no try. LouDiamond 1 #2 January 18, 2005 The biggest draw back to using any of the currently aerodynamic specific helmets out there is that once under canopy the ability to look up/turn the head is greatly reduced if not impossible. A current closed face skydiving helmet is pretty close to the most practical solution. Adding extra material to the helmet to cover the lower neck region and blend it with the shoulder/chest area would pose the problem I stated above after opening and or potentially inhibit emergency procedures."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
Pendragon 1 #3 January 19, 2005 The 4-fight cut helmet (by Icaro) was designed for paraglider pilots so they could still look up at their canopy without a long tail getting in the way. They look pretty funky, but I don't know how much they'd help. http://www.icaro2000.com/Products/Helmets/4fight/Pictures/Cut%20Integral/Colors%20Cut%20Integral.htm-- BASE #1182 Muff #3573 PFI #52; UK WSI #
Pendragon 1 #4 January 19, 2005 Just found this: the Icaro helmets I mentioned in my previous post have been used for skydiving and wingsuit flights : http://www.icaro2000.com/Gallery/Helmets/4fight%20paracadutismo.htm You could always contact the photographer accredited for more info...? SkymonkeyONE 4 #6 January 19, 2005 I was talking to Alaska Jon Devore about those things at PIA. He said that, oddly, the cone head helmet he jumps does not affect his freeflying at all.

LouDiamond 1 #8 January 19, 2005 Actually, photo Kb185 is on the birdman site and Hans uses a similar photo on his business cards. If you look closely at the back of the helmet where it comes to a point, there is very littel room to tilt ones head back before the helmet would hit the yoke of the container. Side to Side movement is adequate but tilting the head straight back is very limited. Dave, just saw a picture where Motorola(I believe) is offering that helmet or one very similar to it with a earphone/boom mic on it so you can yap with your buddies. Pendragon 1 #10 January 21, 2005 Quote Price list? It's an English site, but at least it'll give you an idea: http://www.sickandwrong.co.uk/shoponline/cat/Paragliding/Helmets/ So £179, which roughly equates to US$320 ('cause the dollar is so weak... ) Have fun! -- BASE #1182 Muff #3573 PFI #52; UK WSI #

I'm not sure I would want to be on my back with a spinning main and twisted risers behind that._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
