Augmented Reality Wingsuit Flights

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Does anybody know if there are existing projects that investigate the use of augmented reality in skydiving?

I'm talking about projecting virtual objects onto a visor during a skydive for whatever purpose. Imagine, for example, a set of rings in the air that a wingsuit pilot has to steer through. Obviously there are safety issues that need to be taken into account like other skydivers in the air and altitude-awareness, but it would certainly make for interesting and challenging wingsuit flights.

The positioning system wouldn't be very hard, either using a high-quality high-frequency GPS system or maybe a couple of low-cost transmitters on the ground for triangulation purposes. The computational aspects and the rendering wouldn't be very hard either.

The hardest thing I see is coming up with the hardware that will effectively project the rings on your visor, as an overlay over the background/sky. So far, most of the augmented reality helmets I've seen are very heavy and big. Certainly this can be optimized though.

Maybe I should start collecting some electronics and fire up my solder iron. ;)

I'm not very big on competitions myself, but slalomming through virtual rings would certainly be an objective way to test wingsuit skills.

Cheers,

Jaap Suter

By the way, thanks to Denise for telling me about this idea.

Have you seen the Altimaster Titan? Things are already heading in that direction.

That's interesting. I've often thought that transmitters and triangulation could be a cheap and accurate alternative to gps but I don't have the knowledge to really work it through.

All this tech is great but there's definately something to be said for taking off your camera, switching off your audibles, leaving your Neptune on the ground and just flying for the fun of it. :)

Might be fun...but flocking with others is already so much fun.
Technology is great, and even though gathering numbers/data is cool...the most fun wingsuit dives, are the ones where there is is little extra fuss as possible...No GPS to think of..no helmet...and just the free feeling of flying....a 3D grid projected on my helmet won't add a whole lot to that in terms of feeling...

And I think more people share this sentiment..
Hell..if Perry could find a way to fly a wingsuit naked, he'd probably do it...for that ultra-free feeling :P

But for me personaly, I also skydive to get away from 3D animated stuff for a while.....it would be the last thing I wanted to see in freefall no matter how cool and how much potential it has.....:)

Your dream is Perry flying his wingsuit naked? Whatever floats your boat... :D

You could also use this to train for "not so virtual" flybys. I wonder if that's a good thing, though.

Imagine both things working out, and Perry perfecting his technique for naked wingsuit flybys on tandems...B|

Sounds like a great video game, best to be done while on the ground.

Pilotwings, yeah! ;)

Regardless of whether such a system would keep you in tune with nature or not, being able to objectively measure the quality of a wingsuit flight could mean a lot to the progression of and R&D in wingsuiting.

That said, I've never actually flown a wingsuit, so I can only dream of doing cloud flybys at the moment. Drool...

Cheers,

Jaap

We had this discussion over a beer once...

About doing a '3d' skyball, or RW coach with a HeadUpDisplay....

But looking at current GPS readings/accuracy for cevilian purpoises...I think we're a long way of before we'll see this puppy for real...

Somehow I could tell.... :D

After flying a wingsuit your feelings will change, in the fact you'll want to keep it simple and your feeling of human flight as pure as possible. ;)

I can't wait. Maybe I should place that order for the Prodigy now. It might arrive around the same day that I meet the minimum requirements to start wingsuiting.

Cool idea about virtual gates in the sky!

I want a heads up display that relates altitudes to rates of descent. For example, if I am descending fast, it will display green numbers and my next grip up high, turns yellow at break off altitude, flashes red below 2,000' because I don't want to see where I am going to pound in!

Hint, look at Alti 2's website for pictures of their prototype heads up display.

so we can set up a night salmon coarse for the birdmen.

I dont think we'll be able to see the fish when it's dark outside.

You may want to lay them out a few days before though, so we
can atleast fly by smell? :D

Come on Ed, how will you tell the fish from the skydivers?
...

The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

You sound like I am only naked under my suit!!!!???? If I had to fly through imaginary hoops on a screen, it would take the freedom from the true Joy of flight!!!! I did a 3 min25 second this weekend, had pull just under 2000ft so it doesnt count I guesse[:/]
Only he can be happy, who can make his the present hour, for today he has lived
