Preview - New Phoenix Fly Suit

Recommended Posts

Here is a sneak preview of the new Phoenix Fly suit: The Phantom

A few details:

- The Phantom is an intermediate wingsuit, flying between the Prodigy and Vampire V-1 in the Phoenix Fly product range.

- It was designed with flockers and progressing pilots in mind.

- Revolutionary air inlets based on jet aircraft in-takes that allow fast and solid pressurization whilst keeping drag to minimum.

- Large back deflector reduces drag and increases lift.

Full information on all the Phantom's features will be released mid July...

Long flights,

The design of that suit looks very nice, but also quite familiar. If the red area on the side of the thighs in the front view are where the air scoops are, then that's exactly like the original Phi prototype that Robi designed and Jari had in Deland a couple of years ago. Jari's brother made his first five flights on that original suit with Jari, myself, Scott, and a couple of others flocking along. The problem with that method of leg inflation was that it simply didn't work, particularly when you were on your back. Even if you were flying on your belly, if your legs were bent at all the scoops would bind up and the leg wing would simply flap, uninflated. I am sure Robi has worked the problem out to his satisfaction if he is now using it on this new suit. As I recall, the problem with that early prototype (Robi's, not the new BirdMan design) was that the scoops were too high on the hips.

Still, that's a really nice looking suit and it's sized correctly for it's target use.

Hi Chuck,

The air inlets are in fact the black areas on the thigh.

Although there are some "familiar" lines, I can assure you this suit has very very little in common with the old Phi prototype.

Incidently the problem on the "old" phi was not that the inlets were too high, it was due to the fact that the inlets were too far round behind the body.

The leg inlets on the Phantom have been tested and provide excellent pressurization regardless of leg position.

Long flights,

Looks pretty cool James. I can see how the smaller inlets will reduce drag. I also think the longer wing which extends from just behind the rig is a good idea. So its an intermediate suit because it has less wing area? These features seem like it would perform quite well... but then of course what do I know about wingsuit design. :P

BTW James, you gonna be at Teuge again on the 9th and 10th of July for the Wingsuit Weekend? Lets hope for better weather this time. ;)

I can see now why Perry made the statement he made and left dz.com. Funny how two pictures of the suit are out for all of 5 minutes and and someone who has not even seen the suit, flown the suit, and has financial interest in a competitors product has picked it apart and shown the faults with it. Does anyone think that PF would release an exact copy of some suit designed a couple of years ago for BMI??? I am sure each suit will speak for itself in the air. We all know that Robert is not going to release a suit that he has not put his all into as well as tons test jumps. That V-1 sure was a FLOP. :S

just wondering if I will get banned now?

This is not necessarily directed towards you

It is real interesting how certain people are trying to say there is a rift/ and or create a rift between 2 companys (in general, but more have been stated).

It doesn’t matter what friggen suit you wear people. Heck someone here even built their own suit, what will ya say about that? Lets just wear whatever suit you have and flock like we should.

If ya don’t have anything nice to say....

Is it a marketing thing to create a rivalry to sell overall more suits? I really doubt that it is...

Dude, ease down. Chuck has opinions about the suits, but I don't see him letting those opinions bias his moderation. Believe me, I've read all the removed threads, too, and in so far as I have a preference for one manufacturer over another, I'm a PF guy, not a BM guy.

We work pretty hard to provide reasonably balanced, unbiased moderation in this forum. If you have a specific issue you want to discuss, please PM me and I'll have a look.

Thanks!

Whatever suit you choose to fly, fly it well or go sit back on the porch. :P

Maybe was a bit strong I just questioned his opinion on a suit none of us have seen in person or flown. How can you have an opinion. I am sure he is a great moderator but just seemed to speak out of turn on something none of us had seen other than pictures. Hince Uncle C having to explain the diff. Hope everyone has a great weekend at Lake Whales!

What did I miss? I am on vacation in Alabama, but I guess I missed some standard-fare drama? My remark back to James was not a dig at all. It was in fact a question/observation I had about the leg inlet on that new suit, which is, in fact, very similar to a similar Robi-designed protype that never made it to production with either company.

Some of you people really need to get out and jump a wingsuit more often.

"- Large back deflector reduces drag and increases lift. "

I'm confident it must be there somewhere, but don't notice it. It must not be similar to the rear deflector on the S3 and V1 then.

I have to agree. Having flown with and examined the prototype up close, there are a few similarities that can be seen between the two suits, which isn't a surprise really. The prototype, while not perfect, did have some good qualities which seem to have made it onto the Phantom. The larger arm wing area on the Phantom should balance the suit out and reduce some of the "swimming" (leg kicking) that I observed on several first timers who flew the Prodigy at the Lake Wales boogie. The Phantom looks like an ideal suit for those not yet skilled enough to fly a V1 with other slower flyers but still want to have a fast suit with a broad performance range. I look forward to flying with one sometime soon.

Edit to add: For the drama/conspiracy crowd, this statement is not a dig, it is an observation.

the more I think about it, the more it almost seems this is a marketing strategy. Create competetion amonst one specific market type....

there are a few similarities

Just to clarify something here. Whilst Scott has seen the "old Phi" he has not touched or even seen the brand new Phantom in person.

Both he and Chuck are pointing out "cosmetic" similarities between an old design and a photo of a new design.

The Phantom is 100% a new suit, no templates / components are the same. The thing they DO have in common is a certain wingsuit designer from Croatia.

Further more, the old Phi was designed for a different purpose; to be an acrobatic suit.

The Phantom is designed to be an all rounder for flockers, solo flyers etc offering (as you rightly put Scott) a very wide performance range.
