Sugarglider - Jii-Wings - GS1

Recommended Posts

Maybe... But the GS1 is not the Sugarglider. Julian put a lot of work into the one, but not the other. As far as I know he's the only skydiver in the company... so losing him could be critical.

This isn't the US or Europe where there's a Wingsuit God under every bush. Maybe Eric will step up to bat next.

why can't we all get along and all that hippy stuff?

:D Well, it's not like we're at WAR!

Taya and I've been waiting for GS1 demo's, and have picked up little snippets through the grapevine here. (It's a VERY small vine.) Just wondering if this affects anything on the technical front...

not to go off topic (not like I ever do that...;)) but
my stepdaughter, 3, sang happy birthday to me on the phone. Kids are sooo smart. Can't even explain how great that made me feel. Kids love you regardless.

Yeah...

She's easily matching anything I've ever done in my S3... and since there are no suits lying around that will fit her - she's only ever jumped her GTi. She's really, really ready for a hotter suit, but is holding out for the S5... unless something better pops up before then!

Hey T,

I actually tried on a GS1 2 weeks ago- looks and feels absolutely awesome, like a natural evolution of the SG. But the proof is always in the flying so hopefully in a week or so....

I have no doubt that Taya will get an average descent rate below 30 mph in a SG.

Agreed. Julian did under 30 in a Sugarglider on Saturday, but Sugargliders are not for sale. He did 36 MPH average, on his back
in a sugarglider - on MY Neptune.

I am worried about a suit developed without his input though, which I beleive the GS1 is.

I think that there is risk around any new suit, granted a lot less when the suit comes from a proven manufacturer. Even if it is tested and everybody else loves it, you may not like it.

That said, the easiest way to tell is to fly one or wait for the reports from people who's view you trust. The wider the choice of suits and manufacturers the more chance you will find several that hit your various sweet spots.

Yes it is true that Julian has left the team and has withdrawn his support of the GS1 after we launched the suit on the 7th of July. A number of factors were involved in Julian and the team parting ways, some more pertinent to this discussion than others. We wish Julian well in his future and we have parted friends, although his leaving – and the timing of his leaving have been a PR and morale disaster for us – as the rampant speculation here illustrates.

In December 2004 I introduced myself on this forum as the designer of the SugarGlider wingsuit. There was no challenge made to my assertion because it is a fact that I can prove beyond any doubt. I made the decision then not to continue making and selling the SugarGlider but to finalise the development of a much improved production model with more scope and value for the market. It is here – the GS1 – my own improvement of my own design.

I have given credit to those who have contributed to my understanding of wingsuit flight and I will not withhold credit where it is due…. At the same time I cannot allow others to take credit for my designs and insights, where their role was one of consultation and feedback. Julian was present throughout the development of the GS1 and I discussed and explained all the changes and refinements I was making to the wingsuit with him and had his support right up until our launch. I fully acknowledge and accept the critical importance of the wingsuit pilot, especially in light of the fact that I do not fly myself (nor will I ever – terrified of heights!), however it is equally important to any team for each person to respect and acknowledge the contribution of the others.

We will be releasing all the details of the new suit over the next couple of days and we trust that the GS1 will speak for itself; we will also be introducing our new test pilot who we are delighted to have on board.

Since we launched we have been overwhelmed by the positive response and encouragement we have received from flyers (including a couple of wingsuit gods) from all over the world and we look forward to our continued development with you.

(pronounced G - jii is the force that makes you fly!)

Jii-Wings - no strings!

Thanks for the update.:)
I'm a Formula 1 enthusiast and understand that everything is a team effort. Those teams have sometimes over 800 members, and only 2 race drivers and a test driver.

Without those drivers though, the team has no idea of how they're doing in relation to their peers. While the physics can be worked out in the wind tunnel, the proof comes from the track.

Regardless of the importance of each member of the team, no individual is indispensible. While drivers come and go, the teams remain. (Well, at least if you're a Ferrari fan.;))

I'm looking forward to seeing the GS1.

T got an average of 44 MPH on her GTi last weekend, with an exit from 12700 and a deployment at 3000ft. Freefall time was 148 seconds. She's currently in Boston doing some stuff there. I really think she's got all she can from her GTi!

Great to hear that everything is on track.

Just a question, the cost of the suit is set at R8 000.
My GTI cost R6 000 brand new less than a year ago.
What is the thought process behind such a difference in the pricing model.

Surely there should be some incentive to try the new guy on the block. I am not sure that introductory offers are supposed to be more than what you can currently get that is tried and tested.

I for one am looking forward to flying one.

Good luck on your new project.

I think true friendship is under-rated

Just my 0.2 Eurocents, but this thought is probably connected with several factors

- small market
- high production/development costs
- people need to eat, you cant run a company if you're not making profit (big or small)

The GS1 is a high end suit. My S3 cost R8450 a year ago, and I think the GS1 is aimed at a similar experience level to those who would now choose an S3-S or Vampire, although the suits are very different WRT the type of flight they perform.

Jii-wings has my measurements (for a demo) and since you're jumping very similar gear (Mirage MT-a half?) and am the same height as me I'm certain the suit will fit you. With your weight/height ratio, you should get great numbers and should have a chance to "try before you buy"

Look at it this way ; Youd probably get an extra minute of flight time each time you jump it, so eventually it will pay for itself,

This is a very special suit;

Keeping it real 22x7

With the replaceable wings, it also looks to be a suit that wont cost you an arm and a leg every time the designers come up with something new. You'd just buy a cheeper set of new wings, and attach them to the known framework you already own..

Son of a bitch. I own a GTI and the best I could manage was 46. I had to borrow Nik's SF3 to get 44 out at jumptown a few weeks ago. Half the DZ has told me theres a birdlady in town who can match my best and whose presence I've missed by minutes due to work scheduling. I wanna fly with her! And now our night jumps got clouded off today and the weekend is hosed due to too much clouds.
AAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!
