MTR-3 short review

Recommended Posts

for those who have been wondering about the new Matter-3 wingsuit, I just got mine in a couple of weeks ago as a replacement of my MTR-2 that blew out on me more than once.

The new suit looks very cool and there have been some major improvements done to it which imho greatly improve the reliability of this suit AND give it an even bigger range than before.

it seems like the air intake on the leg wing is now larger and i think the stance of the leg wing is also wider [although I wouldn't bet money on that one]. the zippers have been moved to the side of the legs and they added neoprene knee patches that help distribute the stress better. with my old suit I couldn't do unstable maneuvers without blowing out the zippers. with my new one I have exptensively done dives into half barrel rolls and stuff like that and no problem at all so far. I have also done a successful WS rodeo last weekend, inspected the suit afterwards and it is fine :)the back deflector is pass through now so the excess air can escape and flow out on top of the leg wing. I am not an aerodynamics whizz and can't pass a judgement on that.
all these improvements paired with the kevlar inside the leg wing make it a lot easier to eliminate the vibrations on the leg wing and I am almost able now to fly the suit with my knees locked. so far I have burned everyone on break-off that I have been flying with. this is not to say that this is the superior suit or to put myself up on a pedestal as a pilot but it shows that this suit has a great range.

Times: I have done 187 seconds from 14,200 ft pulling at 2,400 ft and 34 seconds from 3,300 ft pulling at 2,000 ft B|.
Rodeo from 12,500 ft dropping my passenger at 4,800 ft was 100 seconds pulling at 2,500 ft.
I have about 40 jumps on this suit now so I don't think I have tapped it out for me yet.

physical strain: funny thing about this suit is that flying with your legs locked for maximum forward speed is very straining on my legs. I used to ride trials bikes competitively and my legs are pretty fit but on my 3 minute flight my legs started shaking like leaves. that was however a sunset load after a full day of packing tandems :)
what's also really nice about this suit is that at pull time the arm wing doesn't get in the way at all. with my WS setup for my rig [PD-176 7-Cell, 10 ft bridle and 33" PC with snag proof plastic handle] I would feel comfortable taking it a lot lower if it wasn't for FAA regulations >:(.
