Legmount PC deployments...help?

Recommended Posts

Yo,
Reluctantly, I've been working at transitioning from BOC to the suit mounted PC on my V1. Any tips for
1. Packing- I can manage a 24" skydiving PC, but I've not been successful at cramming a 38" internal handle PC (my size/type of choice for WSBASE) into the pouch. I'm thinking F-111 maybe..but that's new turf for me too..:P
2. The Pull....What is the technique that works best for you. I've found that trying to pull at a 90degree angle to your leg is not smooth at all. And if I grab, pull down toward my feet to extract, then throw..well it takes awhile but is much cleaner. I've had more linetwists than ever on any of my WS jumps and am just looking for some help as no one in my area (that I know of) is currently using this type of deployment setup with this suit so I kan't git no real life coaching....until 704 gets his V...
Thanks in advance,
Blair

Hi.

My S3 had a base PC pouch that I used exclusively from about jump 30 on. I'm using a 32 inch F-111 PC with birdseye mesh, so it packs quite big and was very tight in the pouch.

Pulling at 90 deg was never an option, but the deployments were always super clean and on heading.

I've since sold my S3 and ordered an S3-S, and I'm borrowing an S3 till my new suit gets here. The borrowed suit has all the options my old one did, but interestingly, the same PC bounces around the inside of the pouch which is MUCH bigger. 90 degree deployments have been routine on the 12 dives I did on the suit last weekend.

Of course, I can't speak for the Vampire, but this indicates some degree of latitude WRT manufacturing tolerances from Birdman, although both ends are completely operational.

Good luck.

Blair,
One thing to keep in mind that I have seen make a difference in using the leg pouch is if the suit was made for you or not. Having used a leg pouch on a suit not made for me I found that I had to use the same down and then out to get a smooth pull. Using the leg pouch on a suit made for me has a completely different feel and is more like a 40-50 degree pull and feels more natural to me. As for packing, the dildo method of folding the PC works for many. Although I have seen several leg PC pouches that look like pregnate hot pockets and the users all felt it was effective in keeping the PC from falling/slipping out while on the ground and posed not pull problems. YMMV.

On my S3 pulling at 90 degrees does nothing at all, I have to pull down (towards my feet) for a bit before I can pull out. It's worth not doing any ws base before you are comfortable with that! My heading performance is not great with the leg pouch because I'm still not quite symmetrical during the pull. Need more practice that's all.

My 36" zp pc fits fine but I'm very careful to make it long and roll it up tight in a “dill-do” stylee (correct technical term for rolled pilot chute).

Thanks everyone :)I ASSume the dil doe style is what I know as the "burritto" method? Which is NOT what is in the PF flight manual....?If not please explain. ? I normally pack a 'mushroom' for all stowed BASE jumps, so this is the goal with a 38ish...
Also, Lou, the suit was made for me..?
I don't plan on WS BASE with the V1 for quite sometime due to THIS issue, otherwise, I'm raring to fly that biotch off the steel:) But for now I'm just going skydiving with it and working on pull procedures.................

:) ANY VAMPIRES WANNA SPEAK UP..PPUULLLEEAASSSEEE:)....guess not they've all gone jumping...sun is going down..

Thanks
Blair

Hey Blair,

just back from China http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=2928 :)
Dildo is the term for the packed PC, you can pack it using the burrito or mushroom method.

Is your PC quite new by chance? After 20-40 jumps the mesh wears in and the pack volume reduces a lot. Where did you get it from?

What size canopy are you jumping? A 36" may be an option.

I avoid the burrito, i had one hesitation caused by this.

The pull should be an "arc" motion, near vertical for the extraction flowing out to the side for a vigorous throw.

Long flights,

Thanks UC,

I have a couple of 38's one with 30+ and one with 10 jumps or so, both from CR/Asylum. A brand new one from Morpheus also. None if these fit really at all.... I jump Ace/BJ 310 and Troll 285MDV so I tend to lean toward the 38, what do you think? Also are there options for opening up the pouch a little?
The comments on the pull are helpful and will give that a try :)Thanks,
Blair

Is that because you want more extraction force from your PC, or because of wingsuit burble issues?

I've seen 32" PC's used very successfully to extract 300+ sized canopies on slightly subterminal jumps. I don't think that you'd have much problem using one at wingsuit terminal with that size canopy, in terms of extraction force.

I think people greatly underestimate the amount of force the PC exerts, relative to how much force is required to open the container and move the canopy to line stretch. The extraction force increases greatly as air speed increases, meaning that at terminal even very small PC's have sufficient drag to get things out to line stretch.

A little of both I guess...but mainly cause that's what I was 'taught' and have used. Do you know of anyone using a 32"PC/300+canopy in the WS BASE environment? I'd be more than willing to give it some tests:).
Thanks for the help, I think what I'll do is try the 32 on a GTI/BOC flight first...since that's the only suit I can BASE right now, and I don't think throwing a 32 on my skydiving rig is going to be much help....

No. But my general thought is that the larger PC is for burble issues, not for lower airspeed or greater extraction force. The relative wind in a wingsuit deployment is of the same magnitude as in a regular one--it just comes from a different direction.

Huh? Seems different both in terms of speed and burble in a WS vs. freefall, to me. Could you clarify?

What I was trying to say, perhaps not too clearly, was that even though your pro-track may be saying that your downward fall rate is slower (hence, in BASE terms, you need a bigger PC), your overall rate of movement (the diagonal flight vector which is your actual overall speed) is not that slow (hence, in BASE terms, you don't really need the bigger PC).
