Tonto 1 #1 October 28, 2003 I've heard that the Icarus Safire is sized about 8% smaller than it's branded. Is this still so? Is it true of the Safire 2? So is a 99 really a 90ish? tIt's the year of the Pig.
Geoff 0 #2 October 28, 2003 It's true for the original Safire and Omega, but not the Safire 2, which is now measured the same way as PD canopies. This has been discussed here a few times, and an official response from Icarus posted, so try a search for more details. Geoff
deaffreeflyer 0 #3 October 28, 2003 Yep my canopy Safire 144ft² is actually 135ft². Cant believe it, I actually wingloaded at 1.37lb/ft² before my 200th jumps!
wmw999 2,445 #4 October 28, 2003 Yep, I had the same experience. I WANTED a 150, so the Safire 149 sounded like a good deal. Downsized from a 220 to it in a day Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
johnny1488 1 #5 October 28, 2003 Thank P.A. for that one. Icarus felt it wise to wait until the model of the canopies was changed to put the sizing back to the proper way so there wasnt mass confusion on what size each canopy really was. The xfire and extremes have always been measured the same as PD canopies as are the safire2s and omnis now. Also, as far as I know, Icarus has never made an attempt to hide the size descrepincy. It was the first thing I was told when I went to demo a safire 3 years ago Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome
BMFin 0 #6 October 29, 2003 As far as I know its not "8% smaller than it is branded." It is 8% smaller compared to how PD measures their canopies. So, you could also say PD canopies are 8% bigger than safire is. I have understood that there is no standard in measuring canopies. Different manufaturers measure differently. For example brand if we have "X" brand "Y" and brand "Z" and they all say 99 sqft. They could all be different size if measured in one standard. I have even understod that sizes from the same manufacturer may vary also, when comparing different products. Brand "X" 99 sqft. semi-elliptical could also produce different figures even when compared to brand "X" 99 sqft. crossbraced with the same standard. Im no rigger or anything, so someone who knows better, please correct me if im wrong.. you can also find some figures about PIA standard measurements from here here Note.. I dont know how reliable these figures are though...
