Here's an idea for a wingsuit competition:

4 way competition, base + 3 wingmen -- could be any number but let's start with 4-way for sake of argument.

Mount the base with 3 distance sensors: left thigh, right thigh, tail wing and mount corresponding units on the hands and / or helmets of the wingmen.

Score by any of
1- tightest formation held for at least 15 seconds
1a - tightest formation while performing a maneuver
2- least deviation / most rigid formation over 60 seconds
2b - least deviation while performing a maneuver
3- use the sensors to key points within a maximum range for no-contact formations

Technically, could we do it? What would you use as a distance sensor? What technology would work reliably and precisely over distances of 10 to 0.1 meters despite temperature, pressure & shock / shaking concerns?

Would it make good video? Is it worthwhile?
My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?

I think the biggest issue with current wingsuit competitions is that they are all so dependent of GPSes, sensors and other technical gadgets.

I think we need a format like that of 4 way in RW.
Aside from video, there shouldnt be a complex digital device needed.

Maybe just a simple rule like the distance between two person not being more then the width or length of one flyer (if 4 way is what you are aiming for) and having that formation flown for an x amount of time.

A lot of the rules you propose take the creative and free flying out of the 4 way, and actually turn it into another data-mining operation.

Keep it simple..and maybe just figures in the 2D plane. As the 3D figures ad another layer of complexity and demands on the formation, camera flyer AND judging that make it hard to impossible to judge and still be objective.

www.wingsuitcompetition.com/jumps.htm

Though we would have liked multiple points, selected at random per jump, we decided to focus on a few simple points in a 2 way format.

Should this work, we're planing on setting up a bigger contest next year, with 4 way teams, and or multiple rounds with randoms etc for the 2 way teams as well.

But for now..simple rules, and some simple figures and a 2 way format may be a better first focus?

I think the key to making a creative sub-dicipline in wingsuit 'work' is finaly throwing all the gadgets out of the window, and focussing on pure flight/formations with lots of creative flying, and finding a clear way to judge that with just video...

fly the wedge into a diving turn back the other way. half way through the camera has to be looking at there bellies

that would score a point in my book

course you'd have to be in Fla to do a move like that:)

So it is one of those typical 'written' Fla moves, or is there actually going to be some video or photo proof this time;)

Mark Harris did the same thing carving around the topgun wedge formations about a year ago over castellon, and again past summer in Germany at the An72 boogie...Especialy you should know Europeans always do the cool things first Tony..how bout them apples:P;)

And still waiting for the proud nation to finaly show it has balls and cough up some more names for the biggest aereal battle since WOII over Spa, Belgium next spring!B|

Show us what you're made off! Show us those tonysuits fly better then the shizzle we got..
We'll be defending the European pride! Scallops and all! Hell..even the French have shown up for the battle! Whats keeping you guys soo long..normaly you guys are at the front when there's some fighting to do:D:ph34r:;)

Dont just talk the talk...walk the walk...!

Not really, the "Natives" who got the beads were not the tribe who's territory Manhattan island sat in.

If we were using that example, then it would have been me giving Chuck Blue's credit card number to Tony and walking away with the suit!

Damn, I miss the old ways... :)
