Came across this animation on the you tube videos. I thought it was a nice touch to toss the PC toss at the end with a reach for the risers. At least the character was by a road for easy pick up..

I'm betting that the developers did not foresee someone landing and thus a fatality or the toss of the PC was mandatory to end the B.A.S.E. jump.
