And there wasn't a plane crashing in Lake Elsinore on Monday morning. The streak of smoke that some saw above the city and reported to authorities was no accident. It came from a canister strapped to a member of the British army's parachute regiment as the team of skydivers prepared for a display to be performed at air shows and sporting events. The regiment, called the Red Devils, has been training in Lake Elsinore for the last few weeks. John Hamilton, owner of Skydive Elsinore, said the Devils have been working on some "dynamic stuff" recently, which helps explain the false alarms. Some of that "stuff" includes displays, the term for the tricks and stunts that skydivers perform in midair, that feature the aforementioned smoke canisters as well as wing suits, outfits that help a skydiver glide in the air. The Devils have trained in the U.S. before but this is the first time they have trained in Lake Elsinore. Cpl. Duncan Murray, 32, said they were attracted to the area due to its world-renowned reputation for great skydiving. "And the weather is so good we can do a great amount of training in a short time," he said. Also, the sickly U.S. dollar made staging the training in the U.S. more affordable than Cyprus, last year's training site. "It's saving the team a lot of money," Murray said. Each of the Devils has served a minimum of three years in a regular battalion and many of the members have seen action in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. "We've all been somewhere," said Murray, who served a tour in Kosovo in 1999. On Thursday, members of the Devils will be touching down in the outfield of The Diamond during the pregame ceremonies before a Lake Elsinore Storm game. Murray said they will be carrying a 200-square-foot U.S. flag, a bigger flag than the one used by the skydivers who performed earlier this month during the Storm's opening night festivities. They also will be carrying a Red Devils flag, which features the regiment's silver winged logo. While many sports fans may have become jaded by seeing similar displays at numerous sporting events, Murray said the Devils try to do something new for each exhibition. "Every display for us is different. Every display is great to do," he said. Some of the Devils have started to become more proficient in the wing suits, which is giving them another way to thrill an audience. They also are developing a complicated night show involving fireworks on their feet. The Devils are part of a fraternity that includes the U.S. Army's Golden Knights and the Canadian Army's Skyhawks. The teams swap stories and try to keep up on what the other teams are doing, Murray said. During their time in Southwest County, the Devils have been staying at the Lake Elsinore Hotel and Casino and, yes, some of the guys have been hitting the tables. "I don't think they've won any money though," Murray said laughing. The Devils will wrap up their training session Friday and get in some sightseeing before heading home to their base near Salisbury, England, their launching pad for a summer season packed with events.
