Documents for a used canopy?

Recommended Posts

Hey there,
I found a really interesting canopy in the classifieds here. I contacted the Seller, but he said that he has no original documents or receipts for the canopy. Isn't it commen in the US to keep this documents or how can one proof the real age of the canopy or other things...
Thanks a lot!

Bernhard

Not in my (somewhat limited) experience. I have never received a manual, original receipt, or anything else with any used gear that I have bought. However, warning labels on canopies and containers list the date that the gear was made and serial number. PD reserves will indicate on the warning label how many times they have been packed and jumped since the last factory inspection.

I'm kinda anal about paperwork for my gear; I keep everything. When I sold my last rig (container and reserve) the owners manuals and packing data card went with it, but not the original invoices (the buyer doesn't need to know what I paid for it).

I wouldn't buy a reserve without the packing data card. You can get owners manuals from the manufacturers (some even have them available online).

Hey Bernhard,

This is Brian, "the seller". Like I stated in my email, I bought the main second hand and I didn't receive any docs with it. Just to reiterate what was said in this thread, the main has a label on it with the DOM and a rigger (or yourself if you feel comfortable doing so) can inspect it. These far better signs IMHO to what the condition the canopy is in that some documnets can tell you. With the exception of reserves, any used gear I have bought, I never have received documents (other than maybe some homemade invoice). You shouldn't buy a reserve w/o a pack data card.

So... the packing data card goes with the reserve, then? I was wondering this, because I'm trying to sell my rig, and the card has notes of Sunpath and Capewell service bulletins in addition to the packing history.

How is this suposed to be consolidated when we piece out the rig?

For example, how will the buyer of my Jav know who did the main closing loop attachment service bulletin?

Make a copy of the data card and keep/send it with the container. Send the original with the reserve.

edit to add - This is a big part of the reason I don't like to sell a used container/reserve seperately.

I also did not get the packing card with the reserve I bought 2nd hand. I thought it went with it, but the seller said it went with the container because of the cypres info? I don't have a cypres, so I don't know jack about that. So, should I contact them and ask for the pack card? The reserve has all of the repacks marked on the label.

Angela.

I'd contact them and ask for a copy of the card. You only _need_ to have the one that shows the current pack job but imho it is a good thing to have a complete record of the canopy's history.

Traditionally, the reserve packing data card goes with the reserve canopy.
If there are Service Bulletins on the container, you should probably send a photocopy of the card with the container.
All Cypres maintenance should be written on/in the Cypres case.
However, the problem with too many cards is that one of them inevitably gets lost!
And the FAA will only be satisfied when the weight of the paperwork exceeds the weight of the parachute! Hah! Hah!
