darrenspooner 0 #1 November 6, 2003 I have 85 jumps, and consider myself to be a very safe and cautious jumper. But reading through the strings on here I think some might see my choice of canopy as being a bit too small and twitchy for someone at my level. Its a Hornet 150, and I load it to about 1.25:1. I don't do anything stupid, I'm gradually learning how to fly it better and better, I am not too proud to land into wind rather than turn late, nor am I bothered if I land on the other side of the airfield after a bad spot. My landings are okay. Chewed grass a few times, but did that on my 170 as well as student canopies. Should I be more conservative and upsize for a while?***Die with your boots on. Tonto 1 #2 November 6, 2003 You are on the limit of a sub 100 jumper at my DZ. You would only be able to exceed that limit with my consent (I'm the CI) - and the fact that you're jumping a 150 (Shorter lines, twitchier than a larger canopy at the same wing load) would not help your cause unless you were an exceptional student. Read this and this and this. Good luck. Remember, the ground always knows where you are. tIt's the year of the Pig.
skybytch 273 #3 November 6, 2003 QuoteI don't do anything stupid What will you do when someone does something stupid in front of you? Quote, I'm gradually learning how to fly it better and better imho, 1.25:1 is not a wingloading for learning how to fly a canopy... But! They're your legs, and the folks at your dz must not be too worried about it if they're letting you jump it there.
twnsnd 1 #4 November 6, 2003 If you want to fly a higher loading at a low jump number, you have to be willing to compromise on other things. You need to do a shitload of hop & pops. Preferably with an empty sky and learn learn learn. You will have to forget about freefall for a while. Believe me, I know. -We are the Swoophaters. Hooknswoop 19 #5 November 6, 2003 You have put yourself in a very risky position. I would recommend either upsizing or a canopy control course, or both. If you make a mistake, it may cost more than you are willing to pay. Too many people follow the advice, "downsize till it hurts, then go up one size." kaerock 1 #6 November 6, 2003 If you feel comfortable flying the canopy, go for it. But fly it like you'd drive a car when it's icey out. Give people extra space, plan to take longer to stop, be extra cautious about people and things around you. Be prepared for unexpected things to cause you to have to react a little more quickly but calmly, don't over-react. dgskydive 0 #9 November 6, 2003 Definately go to a bigger canopy! You are pushing the odds. I hope you fly as conservative as you say you do. I did the same thing at you experience and walked away from some of my landings by the grace of God an saw a few friends that didn't. QuoteI load it to about 1.25:1. There is a reason that the manufactures don't recommend this wing loading for your jump numbers! I don't do anything stupid FAMOUS LAST WORDS!!!!!!! Chewed grass a few times, but did that on my 170 as well as student canopies. That should have been the hint that you are not ready to downsize! I bet it hurt less when you "chewed grass" on a bigger canopy! Never having seen you jump, I would tell you to please don't become a statistic! Use your head as best as possible and don't take anybody else out with ya. Then again that is why they are called accidents. Nobody plans on getting hurt or killing themselves (well 99% don't). Who did you buy the canopy you have from? What questions did they ask you before you bought it? Did they explain to you the extra risk you are putting yourself into? QuoteShould I be more conservative and upsize for a while? IMHO, YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!Dom
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
