open/dynamic corners on a Quasar 2?

Recommended Posts

The quasar 2 has very tight closed corners, making it probably a pretty poor choice as an off the rack rig for WS flying. How hard would it be to modify the corners on the rig to make them open or "dynamic". Thanks I appreciate your help (I have emailed Strong too but would like to hear any other first hand experience).

I think only Master Riggers can modify a rig. So if you're asking how hard it would be for _you_ to do it, then the answer is "pretty hard, if you figure in the effort to become a master rigger." I think your best info will come from the rig's manufacturer.

I am aware that only a master rigger could do such work, but thanks for posting that. You also must of missed the part where I said I had already contacted the manufacturer. Thanks for trying to help though. ;)

Andy, I think that the mod that Morpheus does (just like on a Jav) would be the cleanest mod. Yes, just cutting the corners would be fine, but there is no "overlap" on the corners, so you would end up having shit showing when the rig is closed. Run over to Raeford and look at LeRoy Buckley's Jav. He had the mod done to it and it's very clean.

i already own it, im still waiting on strong to reply.

thanks for the advice guys. Whatever it does to my rig it still has to be freefly friendly first and foremost. Do you think the mod detracts any from the durability of the rig in freefall chuck? (referring to the "shit hanging out" hehe :)

I'm not familiar with the Quasar container, but Chuck mentioned overlapping corners so there isn't canopy/lines hanging out....well, here are some pics of my Mirage G3 with the BM mod straight from the manufacturer(I ordered the rig with the mod). This rig is about 2 years old, size M3X.

BMMod1 is the container closed up as normal.

BMMod2 is the container open, but all flaps still in place.

BMMod3 is a close up of one of the open corners.

BMMod4 is a both open corners, with the flaps pulled open.

As you can see, with the overlap and everything closed, there is nothing exposed....I think that's what Chuck is referring to with the Morpheus mod.

A Quasar II has "square" corners IIRC. The bottom of the rig is square; not overlapped like a Mirage, Wings, VooDoo, etc. If you simply cut the corners down and pack the "standard" way, with your lines to the bottom of the container, then you will likely see your lines hanging out. Packing pin to grommet will keep it tidier, but it will get sloppier and sloppier as you use the rig without that mod. If you do not get the Morpheus mod, then I would not cut the corners all the way to the bottom. The Mod that Morpheus does adds two pieces of material, stiffened so that when you close the rig the mod folds in on itself and contains the deployment bag and lines. Once again, go over to Raeford and look at LeRoy's. Others on here who have that mod (on Javelins; very similar corners) are KimGriffin and Vladi Pesa.

I know I'm being dumb, but is a rig with the Morpheus or factory manufactured BM mod as 'rock-solid' as people would say about the same rig without the mod?

Just thinking about when I've done a bunch more jumps (i.e. 200!) and want a new container for myself, which I will want to last for a couple of thousand jumps. Way off in the distance, but something to bear in mind in case my lucky numbers come up!

Do you have another picture with the bottom flap open so the tray is completely open?

Thanks,

nic

Mine does not have the "dynamic" corners that allow the bottom flap to lay flat - mine just has the corners open half way down the bottom flap. It allows the bottom flap to flop down a little, but the biggest thing is that there is no corner for the D bag to catch on, which would likely cause severe line twists.

Attached is a pic of it open, though....the D bag is in the "normal" position, not grommet up like I pack it for wingsuit jumps. This is my only rig, so I use it for all types. I've only had off heading openings a couple times with my wingsuit - usually they are dead on heading with no line twists.

Mike

Edit to add: I plan to, in the not too distant future, order a second rig primarily(maybe strictly) for wingsuit. It will be a Wings with their wingsuit mods - but I am not sure whether or not they offer the dynamic corners or just open corners like my Mirage has. I would suggest anybody considering a rig for mainly wingsuit stuff look at the Wings, and ask Sunpath(if you're interested in a Jav) what mods they offer. I know a couple guys at Deland were "testing" BM mods for them.
