SkymonkeyONE 4 #2 November 10, 2003 You will get a hundred people telling you to do it a hundred ways, but I have had really good luck with urethane-based paints on skydiving helmets (motorcycle beanies as well). Good surface prep is the key.
WayneRATS 0 #3 November 10, 2003 "good surface preperation is the key" pardon the pun what about making sure it doesn't chip off?------------------------ Can You Ere Me Now?
rigging65 0 #4 November 10, 2003 Quotewhat about making sure it doesn't chip off? Use a good, finish clear coat. Be aware though, many of them give a "gloss" effect to your paint scheme. I did a really nice metallic fleck gloss/flat primer grey combination about a year ago and finished it with a clear coat. It looks great, but the "Primer" grey is no longer "Primer." It's kind of a bit glossy. I assume they make a "flat" clear coat...I just wasn't that savy to think to look for it! VectorBoy 0 #6 November 10, 2003 I believe that helmet was painted with catylized paint, two part urethanes mostly. I painted my oxygen with the same. If you plan on using cheaper acrylics or sign painters paints you will need a barrier otherwise the cheapo stuff won't stick and it will bubble up. This can be tested of course as it will do this during or shortly after drying. If you are going to scuff it down to the primer then you can put on anything you want. Any auto or sign painters supply house should be able to help you with technical questions. Many super custom painters paint very radical biker helmets as a demo or showcase of their capabilities and it can be done on a small scale. There are many good ideas out there.
