container for big main, bigger reserve

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about going with a 230 Silhouette main and a 281 PD reserve. Most of the containers I've seen specs for online seem to be sized for either the same size main and reserve or a smaller reserve. For example, a Vector 358M has a 230 Silhouette and a 218 reserve as the recommended size combination. How do you figure out a container size if the reserve is somewhat bigger? Go to the next size up container?

No. When ordering a custom container, simply state what size canopies are going into it and let the manufacturer build to suit.

Mirage, Jump Shack and Wings in particular are very good at this; though I don't know of any manufacturers that can't handle it.

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

While you can work this out, I would suggest if you can jump a 230 Silhouette you don't need a 281 reserve. These canopies are not so different in performance to warrent such a disparaty in size. Talk to your local instructors and/or rigger and see if they agree. The 281 is really geared toward the very heaviest of jumpers who couldn't legally jump any of the other reserves with a 254lb max legal limit. If your heavy enough to need the 281 you may need to be on a bigger main.

With my current weight, I would be at about 1.3:1 on that 230. On the 281 reserve, I'd be at about 1:1.

That's no different than someone who uses a 120 as a main and a 143 as a reserve, the variation is the same, I just weigh more. :)

I'm not planning on being on that 230 anytime soon anyway. I was mostly just wondering whether you could get a container sized that way, obviously you can.
