3D edition - International Artistic Wingsuit Competition 2010
Costyn replied to mccordia's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Hi all, A bit late, but we have a PDF with lots of general information about the event now available. See you there! Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News -
NICE! Thanks for that! I see that I've set my settings to log every 1 meter. That way I can use it both for skydiving and for geotagging my photo's without having to go in and change the settings. In reply to bor's question: it doesn't look like I'm using any special settings. See the screenshot from BT747 for the settings I'm using. Hope this helps. Cheers, Costyn. Hmm that's weird... you did have a good GPS satellite acquisition? I've been trying to get into the setup program (QTravel) to check the settings, but it's asking me for a product key I didn't know I needed. I've emailed Qstarz about it, waiting for a reply. It's been a while since I set it up, so I can't tell you what the current settings are. I'll let you know once I do. Cheers Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News

Paralog uses the gpsbabel library to talk to GPS units. gpsbabel supports the Qstarz BT1300s so it works with Paralog too. Or did you mean the GPS units mentioned on the Paralog page? The Qstars unit is definitely the most recent unit. The ForeTrex and Wintec's work ok, but the Qstarz is smaller (the same size as a dytter), more sensitive (faster GPS aquisition) and has more logging space. Jarno (mccordia) and I both use the Qstarz BT1300s. It works great and will log at 1Hz. Cheers, Costyn Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News

Hi, Guillaume Richard took my code and integrated it into various standalone binaries, which you can download on his site here: http://larve.free.fr/gpx2srt/Site/gpx2srt.html It's not exactly an easy process but I think it should all work. Paralog (www.paralog.net) can do the same thing too. It's a lot easier than using gpx2srt but Paralog is not free. Of course Paralog does a lot of other cool stuff too... So it depends on how nerdy you are.. If you just want to get quick results or aren't very technically inclined, use Paralog, otherwise you might give the gpx2srt script a try. Good luck. Cheers, Costyn. Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News

Easy! 3D! It's all the hype in the movie theaters these days... But: I'd rather play the game sooner than later; 3d could be a cool future feature. Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News

3D edition - International Artistic Wingsuit Competition 2010
Costyn replied to mccordia's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Absolutely, all wingsuiters are welcome! Depending on the turnout, we might split it into 2 events, one for the novice teams and one for the more experienced teams, to make it more fun for the novice teams. Cheers, Costyn. Hmm? Thinking of joining us? I'm sure you should be able to find 2 able bodied American wingsuiters willing to join you... We've just added another team from Germany: Team Colibri. Check out the roster of teams expected to come on the competition page [url http://www.wingsuitcompetition.com/wscomp2010/index.html]here[url]. Ah, so the more expensive 7D wasn't really an option? Looks nice! What lens were you using? McCordia and DSE have both commented that the footage when on full auto tends to be overexposed, with some bright areas being burnt (but they are both pro's, as an amateur I don't notice it myself). I've been trying to dial it in on manual, to get better results. Cheers, Costyn. Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News

I've been happily editing my Canon sourced footage on Sony Vegas 9. What software did you have headaches with? Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News

Ah, I didn't know about the 7D having APS-C. I guess I should do my research before blabbing about it here.
-
I didn't know the difference was that small. That's indeed negligible. The 550D does 60fps too (at 720p). The nice thing about the 550D is you have the cheaper EF-S lenses, which don't fit on the larger bodies with the full frame sensors. Agreed, a good lens is really important. Having a awesome body with a crappy lens would be a shame. Cheers Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News

If you're going to be using it mostly for skydiving, a 550D is an obvious choice if you ask me. I'd rather have less weight on my head. If you are mostly going to use it for other, ground based things, a 7D or 5D mark II is better if you have the choice. Let us know what you decide. Be sure to do your research beforehand though! FlyLikeBrick - Flight Manual #8 - Recovery Techniques
Costyn replied to mccordia's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Hrmmph... they're called breakbeats actually. It's a remix (by British DJ trio Stereo 8) of the song 'One Perfect Sunrise' of a British electronica group called Orbital. So neither techno, nor German! I always do a spell check for Jarno, and had actually sent him the corrections for this video, but I guess he forgot them in his rush to get this video online. As always, he's forgiven because he always dishes out such excellent videos. Cheers Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News -
Are you the evil (666) version of Butters?

June issue of Parachutist...explaination please
Costyn replied to 240m3srt's topic in Wing Suit Flying
The canopy pilot is hauling ass. If you look closely, you can see his front risers are pulled down by a couple inches, held in place by a couple buckles. Plus it's probably a sub 100sqft parachute, and then you've got some serious forward and downward speed, enough for a wingsuiter with a big wingsuit and enough skills to fly next to and dock. Also check this, the Ill Vision team did something similar recenlty. (skip to 4:10 for the wingsuit/parachute relative work stuff). To conclude: it's hard and requires lots of planning (timing the exits is complicated) and plenty of skill for both participants, but yes it can be done! Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News -
Agreed, amazing stuff! Really good job guys. Setting the bar pretty high for the rest of us... Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News

Ok, I think I get all that.

I shot it at 1080p at 25fps. I'll try 720@50fps next time. Question about this: if I want to slo-mo footage during editing, is it better to have the absolute max frame rate or to adhere to the color scheme of the final video? Because in PAL mode I can only go up to 50fps but in NTSC you can set it to 60fps. The final video render would be in PAL as that's what we use here, so I was wondering about that... When is that? I hadn't noticed any really, but then I wasn't really looking for it. Would a higher fps compensate? In manual video mode I can adjust pretty much anything; is the low shutter speed so that I can keep a large aperture? Cheers, Costyn. Costyn replied to LouDiamond's topic in Photography and Video
Hi DSE, Thanks, I thought video might have extra things to take into account that pertain especially to video. During the past years of owning a DSLR I have done my homework on photography and feel I have a good grasp of aperture, shutter speed, iso and the inherent relationship between them. And about 'fast' lenses and such. Here's some delicious shallow DOF footage I made recently: http://vimeo.com/11024962 (warning, non skydiving footage! ) Cheers Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News -

Hey DSE, do you know any articles online that you can recommend about this stuff? I'd like to learn how to shoot better video with my 550D. Cheers, Costyn. Costyn van Dongen - http://www.flylikebrick.com/ - World Wide Wingsuit News
