  1. Sounds like the proactive approach is going to be needed. If YOU really want it, YOU will make it happen.
  2. That speed can get ya, just ask Steve! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSkAjKVB_hM This isn't meant to freak you out, but to learn from...
  3. But wait, it gets even better. Apparently the "militia men" of the lower border lands are gathering and plan on taking the "fight" to them. Armed to the gills no doubt. WTF.
  4. John, what has been your suit progression? what suit do you plan on flaring? If your not flying with a good AoA and sustaining enough speed, the flare ain't gonna happen!
  5. Thanks guys for bringing me up to speed! And the training aid
  6. Sooo, I beg to differ. For the record, I have a strong background as a career Firefighter/EMT. BLS(basic life support) is just that, ABC's... The bottom line, if your not qualified to give aid, wait until the qualified people arrive. Easier said than done I know. While your likely to be covered under the "good Samaritan law" you really could do more harm than good. That really is the BIG take away here. grimmie, how do you remove the rig when you suspect serious cervical/back injury? This isn't a trick question and anyone with any experience will tell you that every call is different. You can drill it all day and still need to think on the fly when it comes time to act. You will know when the rig needs to come off quickly. Splinting is pretty straight forward, bleeding control is pretty straight forward. maintaining a patent airway on an unconscious person with a traumatic injury takes some know how to prevent further injury. Those last three words should stay with you. Now put it all in to context: What types of injuries are we likely to encounter? Lower extremities from bad landings most of the time. Once you get into the core and head region is where it matters most. Was the incident witnessed? This will help immensely. The ability to quickly differentiate between a medical and a trauma call could be all the difference. Discuss.
  7. http://arcusflight.ws/wingsuit-coaching/ Do yourself a big favor and take a vacation! Wingsuiters quickly realize that line twists are the bane in our game. Everything that we do is to mitigate this issue. The canopy makers are taking notes and getting in on it. Buy my "WS specific" latest and greatest thing. And while yes, these canopies do in fact have better, more forgiving opening characteristics the bottom line is, your form, your rig mods and your packing reflect A LOT on the outcome.
  8. Soooo, did you find what you were looking for here? Where do you jump? I ask because I too am pretty much a lonely WS pilot at a little 182 DZ in PA... All of the responses in the thread give great feedback. In the end though, I would say to just pull the trigger on the new suit. You will learn how to fly it. you will be surprised at the performance gained. You might poop your pants! But in all seriousness it's not that difficult of a change in general. To echo Mr Jones, you will need to fly fast. Speed converts to flare, not enough speed, no flare! Not really a problem as this suit basically demands it! You can deploy any suit flying flat in full flight but once you have that larger burble you really do want to make the proper adjustments to avoid the dreaded line twists. (there going to happen anyway) All that being said, make sure you have ALL the WS modifications to your rig. The only thing I have yet to change on my set up is a semi stowless d bag. (coming soon!) It really boils down too: The rig, how you pack it, what kind of canopy is in it and how you fly to deploy. There are many little things in this short list that all require attention to detail to make the final out come what you want... A clean opening. So pull the trigger already
  9. Try to not break your face(from that HUGE smile) when you go UP for the 1st time!!! You gonna love the ATC.
  10. thoughts on a "hybrid container"? The main made just like a BASE rig that opens completely...
  11. I've chased a few numbers and have come to LOVE HOP AND POPS! Some advice, look at ALL the positive numbers/stats instead of the bad ones... Millions of (uneventful) skydives occur every year. The vast majority of accidents that happen were avoidable(ie, human error). Change the mindset of "what if's" can go wrong to: what do I need to do to make this RIGHT!
  12. ***I am told that HMA is just the material name for a product called Technora. Does anyone know if this is true? I know that Vectran, Dactron and Spectra are just brand names. Vectran is a liquid crystal polymer and Spectra is a type of UHMW polyethylene. Dacron is polyester. Anyway, does anyone know the differences between Vectran and HMA as it related to skydiving? My understanding is that both lines stay in trim until the lines need replacement (unlike Spectra). So what is the advantage of one over the other? Why would one chose HMA over Vectran or vise verse? I know that Vectran is less prone to spontaneous failure than HMA, but that's the main difference I know about.[/quote https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVAoiLl2B6M
  13. https://squirrel.ws/gallery Two BASE packing video's for you, and a bunch of other eye candy!
  14. So dynamic WS corners mitigate this issue? Both my rigs have it (older wings and vector3). I jump mostly at a 182 DZ and do a lot of solo. I was in the business of flying camera backward to get deployment feedback and see what was actually happening. Of course WS deployments are a whole other animal that brings EVERYTHING to light. I do still use a regular D bag and really need the switch to semi stowless...
  15. I didn’t when I was BASE jumping. The center cell was wide open with 3 cells on each side of the center cell. \\\V/// Is the best I can explain it. Same way reserves are packed. You want a nose first inflation for on-heading performance and to help prevent a line over. If the tail deploys first, the nose can catch a control line, creating a line over. Definitely no rolling of the nose. I don’t roll or stuff the nose when packing a main. Derek V squirrel.ws they have two videos packing BASE rigs... Two VERY nice videos!
  16. Just trying to track down my instructors from back in the day. Raeford, late 90's time frame.
  17. I've talked to "world champions", too, and they don't know the difference between L/D and GR, either. It is a trivial thing, but the number of people in our Solar System understanding what L/D actually is (that it's not just another notation for GR) can be counted on one hand... of a man who chopped some fingers off on a circular saw. It's hopeless. The wingsuiting is stuck in the state of CoW perpetually. No desire to learn anything, to think, to progress... Only endless blah-blah-blah. There's no need to lend anything, the tool (vane) can be made by anyone in one evening. The app (L/D Vario) is free and runs on any of the 4 platforms: Android, Wear, ios, Windows. Maybe I should start a poll asking when someone else, besides me, is going to jump with a vane (the only way of reliably and precisely measuring wingsuit aerodynamics). But it's clear that it should have only one option: "Never". Perhaps you should take up sewing...?
  18. POSITIVITY! Thank you for posting something WORTHY! And to the others, Biting one's tongue is a tough choice. Choose to be better.
  19. DEMO, or other??? I'm on a custom 170 Storm and love it. A VERY high profile DEMO team use the Spectre... https://www.facebook.com/denverbroncosthunderstorm/
  20. True enough. But people with mental health issues aren't unique to the US. Every developed nation in the world has them. Depressed teenagers?? Jesus - that's probably 80% of all teenagers everywhere. What IS unique to the US is the prevalence of guns and the access people have to them, and that's why this problem is only seen in one first world country... So yeah, the sick people wanting to lash out won't go away but you have to admit, it would be much harder for them to murder a bunch of people if they didn't have access to items designed specifically for that purpose. As difficult as the gun control issue is to contemplate, it's a lot easier than to proactively prevent mental health issues. PREVENTION, some of us get it...
  21. Society is at fault, not guns or the manufactures. "We" have serious mental health problems in this country and that will only continue to grow. The problem with sick people who are compelled to lash out will NEVER go away... So what is the answer??? Arm yourself and defend you and your family? Avoid putting yourself in harms way is where I begin. I grew up in Baltimore, MD. I know a little about gun violence. I also grew up in a family with strong morals and family values, AND GUNS! I was raised to shoot/hunt at an early age. I also served in the 82ND AIRBORNE, returned to the civilian sector as an armed security guard and now play Firefighter. So guns are ingrained in my being you could say. So, where am I going with this rant? Mitigate the problem, because it will always be a part of us. What caused the Moral compass train to derail??? What happened to the Mayberry towns and good vibes of the 50's. Times change, people change... Point all the fingers, blame availability, Blame the catholics, blame the government. I personally would begin looking at history and laugh as you may, the Entertainment industry, AKA Hollywood. THINK ABOUT IT. When you glamorize and perpetuate (gun) violence you beget violence.
  22. I'm a guy who prides himself on packing his own rig and owning whatever happens... That being said, even after several hundred jumps/pack jobs I'm always looking for ways to refine my work... J MO is a SKYGOD and is going to make ANY pack style look easy! That being said I am very interested in trying this method. Sooo, to echo a fellow jumper, pick a way and make it work! I do find that packing SLOWLY and methodically helps A LOT. Watch EVERY pack job you can, and practice. Youtube is your friend
