Except that guns make it much, much easier to kill someone. I can assure you most of the population couldn't kill me if they came at me with a knife. Different story with a gun. Its not necessarily the intent to kill that scares me but rather how they do it. Before you start calling me a libtard I just want to let you know that im not against guns, I'm even planning on buying my first handgun pretty soon. Its fun, but like skydiving, its fucking dangerous. And unlike skydiving, any demented moron can drop a couple of bills and get into the hobby. That being said, this chart is rather misleading. There are many more factors involved with the increase or decrease in violent crimes, many of which may not even involve firearms being present. For all we know NOT regulating firearms could have made things worst.

My Struggle & Journey (advice needed)
dontlikemustard replied to JefferyHale's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Haha, that yawning bright door is terrifying at first, swallowing the passengers one by one with a great roar each time. The jump master, with inexplicable calmness, checking they've been fully digested before signalling for the next sacrifice to move into position. I'd love to see these over the aircraft doorways, but it's probably a safety violation. Plus the cool crowd wouldn't be amused... ...but I'd be! p.s. The breathing, visualization and meditation exercises suggested by others were helpful for me. They didn't make the fear go away (at first), but they put a damper on it. -
My Struggle & Journey (advice needed)
dontlikemustard replied to JefferyHale's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
im not as experienced as everyone here, but as a new jumper who just went through something similar, everything is still fresh in my mind, and i feel the need to share, as its what worked for me. 1) one thing that helped me was to focus down my fear, as in... what was it exactly that scared me so much? spinning out of control? dust devils? horseshoe malfunctions? talk it through with your instructors. oh and tip em well. 2) Before my AFF1, I sat on the computer, browsing forums, looking at malfunction videos on the internet, for hours and hours, everyday. Looking at every possible malfunction out there, and how people overcame them. I refused to just jump without being as aware as I can be about every possible thing that can go wrong. I hit the wind tunnel before aff1, just in case. I read Brian Germains book on canopy control. I figured out how the cutaway system works, how the parachute works, how to do checks, I wanted to learn how people have died in this sport, death statistics, odds of freak accidents etc... Jumping out of a plane uninformed makes me uncomfortable. Inexperience and lack of knowledge of this sport is our greatest threat as student jumpers. If something bugs you, ask about it. 3) have you ever tried meditating? not asking you to go ahead and start doing yoga at the dz (though thats ok too). just sit down somewhere, close your eyes, back straight, breathe slow and remember skydiving for what it is supposed to be, pure fucking adrenaline fun. blue skies -

Quick question about skydiving log book.

Welcome to the sport!

I broke my arm slipping off a log and falling in a mud pit. One week later I was rushing down the stairs, lost my balance, and broke my toe. A week later I got an ear infection. While having a broken arm, toe and ear infection, I was trying to move a couch in the living room, and slammed my head on the corner of the couch and now I got a scar behind my hair line by my right ear.

Bill, There are thousands of different ways to land yourself in jail. It just so happens that kidnapping is the most "similar" one to actually being in jail. Of course, we can go off on a tangent and argue that kidnapping and putting someone in jail are different, and then we can just run in circles all day. But that is just one crime amongst the many. It is true that I don't look at an executioner as a murderer. But I do see it as a repetition of the crime itself, and that is where we differ, again. I am sure you agree with me that, by allowing the death penalty, you are, justifying killing. With that logic, could it be legal to rape a convicted rapist? legally steal from a thief? We will never do those things because we are better than that, 'cept when it comes to killing. Killing a person because that person killed someone is justified. Lets just give it a different name i.e. "capital punishment", lets make sure to use alcohol and sterilize the needle so he doesn't get sick in the process, anything to make us feel better. In the end? what have we done? We a taken that persons life, just like he did. Nothing more, nothing less. We have done the exact same thing we despised him for doing. ---- As for those of you who say that it is necessary to kill a murderer because they are "cancers" to society, and its the only way to be 100% sure they will never walk free again. Life without parole, no chance of pardon + implant a gps tracking chip in case they escape. Totally doable, way cheaper than a death sentence.

I think we can agree to disagree. One would think. And then there's SC.... :) Now now... were not that bad haha.

Oh, OK. So if I build a jail in my house and keep someone in it against his will, I shouldn't go to prison for that. Because it would be hypocritical of the government to put me in prison for imprisoning someone else. If you build a jail in your house and keep someone in it against his will, that is called kidnapping. Placing a convicted criminal behind bars is not kidnapping. If someone pleads guilty to assault that does not give .gov the right to beat him up. If someone is guilty of raping someone, it does not give the government the right to rape him. We are better than that, right? Now when it comes to killing, the worst of all crimes, its suddenly okay for us to sink to their level.

This is true, except that I graduated in a class of about 100 civil engineers and about 25 of us actually found work so far. Considering the fact that about 10 of those got jobs through their dads businesses I would say it sucks even for those with degrees with technical backgrounds right now. Not living in a dorm, working, and staying at a local public university has allowed me to graduate with $7,800 of debt in the end. So there are still ways around this shitty educational system. Of course it can, it just chooses to spend its money elsewhere.

I am all for a life sentence because it keeps a convicted murderer from hurting someone else ever again. The government should act as a role model when it comes to maintaining the law, killing a convicted murderer is hypocritical.

If by made it you mean Adele's or Lady Gaga status, probably not. Truth is there are probably hundreds or thousands of artists as talented as Mamma Cass today that we will never get to hear about.
-
Why NOT the death penalty? its very expensive, does not solve anything, its not full proof, life sentence without parole is not a difficult concept to implement --- but really, we have to ask ourselves... when were wishing suffering upon someone for hurting another, what does that make us? revenge solves nothing, the damage has been done. its sad, but its true.

well... i definitely saw that one coming.

Turns out its a mild bulging disc, and i wasn't letting it heal because of bad sitting posture at work and my exercise routine. No swimming, cycling, lifting for a week. I suppose that's doable. Oh and my doctor was really hot, so I guess I'll have something to look forward to for my next back injury. -
someone had to do it.

Chris, you had me believing you until that very last part. I want to keep arguing but I need more posts. I shall revive this thread in a couple of years. -
This might help those in need. "1)Get more fiber into your system. This will make pooping easier, faster, and most importantly, cleaner. 2)When you sit on the bowl, attempt to spread your cheeks a little right before contact with the bowl. Optionally, squat over the bowl (have your feet on the bowl rim). I don't recommend this unless the toilet you're using is built for this. 3)When actually pooping, aim for long thrusts - try to get the entire log out at once. If you have to take a break, don't snap the log - just let it hang out until you feel ready to go again. It helps if your upper body is leaning forward. Experiment with this until you find an optimal zone. Mine is with my elbows on my knees and my head resting on my hands, but I know some people have their head by their knees. 4)Once absolutely, EVERYTHING is out and you feel ready, grab a couple of squares of toilet paper. Personally, the equivalent of 3 ply is enough for me (rounding down), but sometimes I have to get the equivalent of 6. (If this confuses you, think of it this way: if you have single ply and want the equivalent of 3, fold 3 squares into 1. If you have 2 ply and you want the equivalent of 3, use 2 squares). 5)Lay the square on your fingers such that it lays flat and your middle finger is along the middle axis of the paper. 6)Bend over (DO NOT STAND UP YOU BARBARIAN) and position your finger tips between your genitals and your anus. Your middle finger should be in the path leading to your anus. 7)Wipe away from your genitals, applying the most pressure to your middle finger. If all goes well, you should get a nice streak of poo. Fold paper and repeat from step 5 until paper is exhausted (usually 1 or 2 more wipes). Discard any used paper into the toilet. 8)Poop clustered around hair can be taken out after one or two wipes. Simply use a fresh sheet and begin the wipe. When over the anus/anal hair, use a pulling action to clean off the poo. This should take care of the poop. 9)Use more paper as necessary until there the paper comes away clean or you start bleeding (easier than you think). 10)Flush and feel proud of your clean asshole."
