If a computer shop can fix it, great, but I know that alot of Compac's hardware is proprietary. I.e. if you want more RAM for a COMPAC, you gotta buy it from COMPAC. Packard Bell is the same way. Well, I gotta say that some of you guys definitely make my injury look like a paper cut!!!!!! Specially those with broken hearts.... You guys really had it rough...

Someone brought up the snowboarding analogy... I think that's kinda the way I see it... It's also how I explain Freeflying to a whuffo (the difference between skiing and snowboarding) I started freeflying at 50 jumps, and honestly think I couldn't keep up with many belly flyers on a formation. I saw Airspeed doing some sick 4-way stuff and I gotta say that it made flat flying look awefully fun!!!! I totally respect that, and I think that RW skills are VERY important to VRW. Which is why I'm gonna get some belly coaching. I don't want to do 200 belly jumps, but I think a good base is RW would help me. Let's face it, most of the best freeflyers were flat flyers first, and have thousands of belly jumps - Olav, Fradet, all of them. I'm sure the experience came in handy when they switched and developped other disciplines. I went to the Canadadian freefly festival this year, and a guy was talking about "flying your slot". Unless you've RW'ed a little, that don't mean that much... and I think it's a skill much better mastered when corking into someones face isn't an issue... All that to say that yes, I freefly, and it's what I love, but I think the skills of our predecssors should not be ignored. I went back on pair of skis last year after 14 years and I loved it. Hey... Chicks dig scars, glory is forever.... My worst injury was a compressed vertebrea on a really baaaad landing last year. I actually have a bump in my back where the vetebrea is misaligned... Personally, I think that there is a reason that the sort of freefall progression you're talking about is being/has been phased out of alot of DZ's. I believe PFF is a much safer way to learn, for exactly the reasons you talk about. At least with an instructor assisted freefall program, your JM is there to help, and doing more than watching from the plane. Mistakes, and bad positioning can be corrected right away, and if all else fails, you have a "training wheel" (jumpmaster) who can deploy for you. I'm by no means an expert, but that's my opinion... My first jump was in Taupo New Zealand in 95 at the end of a six-month backpacking trip. I figured I had nothing to lose by spending whatever cash I had left and I signed up for a tandem. I was scared Sh*&less and I think I kept my eyes closed for most of it. I decided that I was not gonna have it that way, so in spring 96 i did another tandem here in Canada. I was going to do a third in 98(?) but the DZO told me I should take my freefall course instead... I had just broken up with my girlfriend of four years, and I figured I had nothing to lose (again) and it was time to do something different. Interesting side note... I met my girlfriend-now-wife at the end of my first season. We went out on the friday night, and then the saturday, and that night she asked me what I was doing the next day. I said I was going to skydive and asked her if she wanted to come. She surprised the hell out of me and said sure. I knew then I would marry her. It only got better when she signed up for her course.
