Reminder: There's nothing wrong with Mondays, it's your job that sucks.
Mach1dmb replied to grue's topic in The Bonfire
Mondays aren't bad for me, that means 2 days until my "weekend" and I can jump. My "Mondays" are Fridays, and I go out on Fridays, so I like my "Monday". -

AFF: Do it now or wait until Spring 2014
Mach1dmb replied to xluckynumber7x's topic in Safety and Training
I would wait until you have enough money to complete your license AND be at least close to being able to afford a first rig. -
Yea my location is accurate. I'm most likely going to order through them if they have the container I want. If I'm buying something brand new, I want exactly what I desire.

Just looking to get some advice outside of my dropzone. I am looking to get my first rig soon and I have been thinking about starting with a brand new container and AAD. I haven't had any luck finding a complete system on the classifieds, but I figure I can find a main and reserve. I'm just wondering where the best place to start is. Obviously my dropzone's proshop wants me to order through them, but I don't know if there are cheaper options online. What are the best places to order from online, and if online is cheaper, does the savings really outweigh the benefits of ordering in person through a shop?

Like jump #10 doing a solo on student status. I was the last to exit the plane and it was cloudy, so I told the pilot and he went around again and said "go now". There were still clouds, but I didn't know better so I just jumped. I was in clouds the entire freefall and could barely make out my altimeter which I had pressed against my goggles. I pulled when I saw 6,000. All I saw was lines disappearing into clouds. Luckily I came out after 10 seconds or so. Also my latest jump, I can't really remember what happened exactly but I had thought the wind direction changed after takeoff and under canopy I decided to still try to land against the wind as everybody on the load already landed. But around 1,000ft I saw the wind was back in the other direction. I made a slight 90 turn on final approach and landed crosswind. I have been having bad landings to begin with recently so I was already scared of flaring too late like I have been. I tried flaring but was getting blown sideways and didn't fully finish my flare. I hit the ground really hard, I thought for sure I was going to brake something. I didn't do a fully PLF, but I had my feet and knees together and tried to slide. I was in a lot of pain but luckily not injured.

Bail out, or land with the plane?
Mach1dmb replied to JohnRich's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Main concern, no..But it might be a concern after I land. It was just a mere curiosity question. I'm just wondering if it ever came up. Depending on the seriousness of the incident, I could see a DZO giving everyone another jump, I can also see it not even crossing anyone's mind. -

So do you get your jump refunded if there is an incident and you are forced out at an early altitude? -
AFF Student... Still waiting for jitters to be gone
Mach1dmb replied to SFBayArea's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I get nervous in the plane sometimes, mostly from being packed in like a sardine and then not having enough time to sit up and breath before its my turn to jump. But I just think of the door like an escape. No matter how nervous I am I know the feeling will be gone the second I jump. -
I think of the handshake like offering peace at church, I want to get everyone. But if I'm still checking my gear or messing with my goggles or something I just ignore the hands in my peripherals and then settle for a select few that I really want to handshake with.

The currency thing is kind of a joke when your new to the sport. You won't die in 2 months not jumping, but your still level can go down fast every week you don't jump. Ask me how I know..I can't afford to rent gear anymore and now I'm taking a break until I get more money to jump more consistently. Your going to run into problems eventually, either with packing or canopy piloting or whatever, and its hard to improve and stay safe if you don't jump enough.

market research Skydivers jobs
Mach1dmb replied to verticalflyer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I had just enough money to get my license after I bought my car. Now I'm 21 and in college, I make practically nothing. I can only jump one time every other week on rental gear -
Unusual Incident: Blinded by Condensation

I haven't tried a full face helmet yet, but I think if I were in that situation I would have just chucked the helmet. I'd rather pay to replace it than get hurt. -
Exit Order Safety Article
Mach1dmb replied to BrianSGermain's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Good god this is confusing. I'm always hearing people say different things about exit order. In the beginning of summer my dropzone was doing freeflyers and large groups first, and then one day out of nowhere they switched and were making me (noob, solo, belly) exit first. I just listen to the majority in the plane, but I'd really like to learn more about this. -

Help getting from NJ to Gardiner, NY
Mach1dmb replied to Terruko's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Is there a thread on here about their Safety Day? I don't have facebook anymore, was trying to find more info on that. Well I will tell you, I got my license at the Ranch, cost me $2600 without failing any levels and already having 2 prior tandems (so 23 jumps to be exact). -
I'm new in this sport too and was searching for the same answer on here. I went last weekend while it was cold and dressed in layered shirts and sweatpants under pants under jumpsuit. Only thing that was cold was my feet..they were numb for landing. But otherwise, not bad at all. Like veryone else said though, check your gloves. I wore thin snowboaridng gloves and they are a little too bulky, but as long at you can throw your pilot chute and flare..

haha thats great. That feeling of looking for the last step in the dark!

You make a good point. I went to the dropzone today and did 1 jump. By the time the 2nd load was going on my rental gear was due back curfew. So it looks like I won't be jumping much at all, even if I wanted to. But I did realize that even 1 jump in a 6 week period is still improving my skills. I think I am going to try to stay current and make 1 jump a month.

I just got my A in August and I had been renting gear and jumping all September. I was jumping a 210 for awhile and after my last jump I was finally ready to go down to a 190. But then the weather became shit for weeks. After the hurricane its finally nice here again (cold, but blue skies), but I just looked at my logbook, my last jump was 10/5. Now I feel perfectly comfortable with jumping after a 6 week break, but now I'm not sure if its even worth staying current..I'm in NY and winter is here..I really doubt I can improve my skills with the snow coming and all, and I fianlly lost that urge to get to the dropzone every single day. I still have a desire to jump, but now that its getting cold I can finally not think about skydiving 24/7. So my question is, should I even bother doing maybe 1-2 jumps a month without progressing at all and make it to spring/safety day while staying current and feeding my slight urge to jump? Or take a break, maybe learn all I get from reading, then take the recurrency test in the spring?

I feel your pain. Between school, work, my wallet, and the weather, its really hard to jump. The only times I actually get the rental rig I want, its too cloudy or I have work the ame day and can only get 1 jump in

I wish. I did mine through The Ranch. Cost me $2800 without failing any levels, not including the cost for USPA membership and the license itself
