  1. Whatever the circumstances of the cutaway, that is an extremely stupid response. No one should ever be criticised for electing to cutaway...they are the ones in the situation at the time making the decision that will save them and their rider. People have been killed because they took such criticism on board to the extent they didn't cutaway on a subsequent jump when they should have for fear of ridicule. Your DZ obviously has more than its fair share of morons. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  4. Apart from his mad skills, you don't really know him well, do you?. Maybe he got a bit lucky as well. I can imagine very clearly the thought that went into this......very little. Its typically his M.O. Cunningly put, but flawed as a valid argument. The people arguing on here have almost certainly been there, done that, with experience in multiple skydiving disciplines. This gives them the ability to make and give valid opinions and judgements. Brett isn't an experienced tandem wingsuit flyer either, and he hasn't yet proved anything, certainly not that he can cope with EVERY situation that might arise in this instance. Bretts ego is only matched by his mouth, and if he isn't on here writing about it, it'll only be because he's too busy out there talking about it. 5. Cutting away will often clear the hookup anyway. Students need to be trained to go for their EPs as soon as a problem is evident. Two quick kicks is enough of an attempt to clear. Students are most vulnerable, so any instruction has to be simple and unambiguous. Freebagged reserves have increased the survival rate in entanglement situations. The instructor who is telling students to disconnect the RSL during a high speed malfunction should have their rating revoked and sent back to instructor school. What absolute nonsense to be telling a novice. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  6. Just looking at some of the responses here, and if they are typical commands or radiospeak, some of you talk WAY too much. Single word commands are best and allow least room for misinterpretation or confusion. " Joe, 360 left" contains all the information necessary for Joe to do a 360 degree left turn. "OK Joe I really want you to do a turn to the left and go around 360 degrees", contains 15 words too many. A first jumper, pumped full of adrenalin, trying to get his head around what the hell just happened, and needing to get himself safely to the ground really doesn't need someone burbling away in his ear anything unneccessary. Why use twenty words when two or three will do?. You really only need to use ten or twelve different words throughout the whole jump. Any more and you'll be straining your radio!!!. Believe me, it makes life way easier...... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  7. Talking SL students here, but once under canopy there is no difference to AFF, except perhaps multiple canopies in the air. Often 4 canopies in the air at once, all on a common channel. The radio man has a pair of powerful binoculars with which he watches the exit and opening. The students are not told about the radio until immediately prior to the jump, thus have to learn CC from the start. Commands are kept to a minimum. The radio man NEVER screams or yells a command...normal speaking voice, very few words...e.g. "left" instead of "left turn", all turns being 90 degrees, apart from minor toggle adjustments below 500 feet. Every student is called by name or nickname, before any commands. In the event of a change in exit order in the plane,(perhaps a refusal) the JM tells the students that they have a new name for a few minutes. (In reality, very rare). The Student has to check their own canopy, and the first instruction they hear doesn't come till they release the brakes. They then get a "Fred, good canopy, 360 left, or right". This confirms a good canopy for each one. They then know that they will land that canopy. In the event of a malfunction, the radio man will give the student time to evaluate and deal with the situation. If the decision is not made within a reasonable time, the radio man will instruct the student. "Fred, Look, Grab, Pull". (Single point cutaway reserve activation). 2nd jump, the student can do everything themselves, and the radio man says nothing. 3rd or 4th jump they are off radio. In a two out scenario, which is the trickiest to deal with, the students are told to assess, but to leave the brakes alone on the reserve if the canopies are side by side, the downplane is now very unlikely, but they must be ready to PLF. If they have a biplane, they are taught to get both sets of toggles and fly the biplane as one canopy. Cutting away in a two out situation is risky in my opinion because of the RSL lanyard, which I have seen wrap around the reserve lines (on an experienced jumper) and choke off the reserve. 8. Are you worried about AAD's?. There are quite a few different AAD's out there. They are a back up, nothing else. The primary AAD is the jumper. The AAD should be irrelevant on every skydive, and if you depend on one for survival, then you need to quit skydiving now. There is often no reliable data to say exactly when an AAD has activated, or in fact whether it was relevant to events that occurred. After a fatal accident the unit is often damaged to the point of making accurate analysis impossible. Any relevant data about the AAD would be contained within the fatality report, which is a public document. Having said all that, AAD's when used properly, are very reliable. If they weren't, they would be a big liability to safety, and jumpers would not use them. Jumping an unreliable AAD would be Russian roulette because it would kill you in the end. 13. Thank you for the few pictures idrankwhat. Shocking. But apparently its all bullshit, sheepshit and Hamas inspired propaganda. It didn't actually happen don't you know. The Israeli government lobbyists have suddenly gone incredibly silent, after bombarding me with nonsense and abuse for my POV about how "moral" Israel and the IDF are. Justify that you bastards!!!. You make me sick!!. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  14. Not replying to your post in particular. but a lot of it is down to PC bullshit, where people are discouraged from saying what they think for fear of upsetting someone. You can't tell someone these days to pull their head in for fear of ridicule as " not being with it". Mostly, I believe it comes down to AFF, where it seems, most of jumpers of the last few years have been trained. A lot of todays instructors have been brought up within the same system and don't have the knowledge or experience to impart proper canopy survival skills. The early jumps are all concerned with FF and the things they have to learn in that aspect...and fair enough. Its a tough way to learn to skydive. An overwhelming number of things to learn at once, and canopy skills are at the bottom of the priority list. These peoples canopy skills from jump number one consist of " listen to the radio.". Some continue for many jumps "listening to the radio", then graduate, and are let loose thinking they have it all sussed. They graduate, then go out and buy their own gear and are basically left to themselves. Its one of the big flaws off AFF, and the chickens of AFF are coming home to roost in the number of incidents/fatalities UNDER GOOD CANOPIES that we see today. In the "good old days" jumpers were more intensively trained in canopy skills, because that was their first experience of skydiving.: i.e. they were trained to do a safe parachute jump. For the last 10 years or more, the "old" system has been subverted by some need to progress faster, better, quicker, as if thats the best way to learn to skydive... A generation of jumpers has grown up not realising or even knowing that canopy skills are an important part of surviving the jump. I always thought a good part of my first jump instruction was the canopy flight part. "Don't fuck up" was an important message I imparted, and it applied to every part of the skydive. Once that message was ingrained, they then learnt to skydive. People today are all to ready to downsize and go for speed and glory. A lot ofthe people on the DZ who once would have advised caution have retired, and are no longer present to influence life on the DZ. I've thought from the day AFF was introduced that it was a flawed way of teaching people to survive a jump from an aeroplane. In the "good old days" fatal accidents under a good canopy were extremely rare. I believe the stats today reflect reflect what I've always maintained. Learning to fly and land were the first and most important part of skydiving. Safe FF skills followed as natural progression. First jump instruction sticks in the brain, and is the most influential training any skydiver will ever recieve... Canopy skills were always first, now they are last. I'm certain that my thoughts will now be dismissed as the rantings of and old fart who knows nothing of the reality of skydiving in 2010. If people are not taught vital canopy skills from day one, this trend will continue. End of story. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  15. Most TM's will tell you they have more problems with the featherweights rather than the big boys. And a few pounds over 200 on the gear makes no difference at all. Its rated to handle it or it shouldn't be in service. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  16. Don't treat me like a mindless idiot then!!!. So, true then. How can factual live pictures show "bias to an existing agenda" Whose agenda?. CNN's?. BBC?. Why would they not report it. It happened, even if someone had an agenda.... IT HAPPENED!!. And yes I did see footage of a few rockets go back over the fence, during the conflict. Most were quite small, totally innaccurate, and caused minor damage. And that was what I saw of Israeli footage. One hit a street and left a crater about a foot deep and about the same wide. I certainly didn't see whole buildings demolished and on fire like happened in Gaza. I've seen fireworks displays with bigger bangs than some of the squibs fired by Hamas ovewr that 3 weeks. Their efforts seemed very amateurish to me. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  17. Whats the reasoning behind the policy?. I can see a lot of people being upset at price differentiation because of weight. Ridiculous!!. Our DZ is 95 kg max. It makes absolutely no difference if the weight is on or below the limit. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  18. OK, one more to continue the Star Trek theme. Saw this one in a public toilet cubicle at the airport one time. Laughed about it everytime I saw the show. Captains log. Stardate 2215. "Scotty and I beamed down for a shit". My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  19. Ummmm....what part of: "I've clicked on them and commented on them" is difficult to understand?. I will look at the Hamas links, but not right now...its 1.42 a.m. and its time to sleep. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  20. So you are saying that the broadcasts I watched daily for 3 weeks of the assault on Gaza were false?. All the explosions and airbursts of WP, the destruction on the ground, all the smoke, the dead bodies......were all fictitious, made up in Hamas studios and distributed to a gullible world press. As were the fatalities....1100 odd Palestinians and 13 Israelis. They were just playing dead?. I'm really sorry...I got it all wrong. How could I be so stupid!!!. Silly me. 22. I already said. Posts...215, 217, 220.....And I think the topic encompasses the Gaza conflict quite appropriately, because I'm mostly talking about IDF OVERREACTION. You contradict yourself...its legal when widely used by Israel against a densely populated city, yet illegal when used by the Taliban and Palestinian fighters?. Israel fired hundreds if not thousands of WP shells over 3 weeks in Gaza. And I don't think the Taliban give a rats arse what they use or who they use it against....they are barbarians, period. I'm sure the Palestinians use whatever they can get their hands on, but I would doubt very much that they have huge amounts of WP or use it extensively. However it is horrible shit and should not be used by anybody. And I don't think their firing rockets into Israel is a very good plan either. 23. You obviously have a problem with me having an opinion contrary to yours. Why that is I don't really know. Show me the link.....I'd like to see that as well. I agree with that. 100%. So you think that the mullahs control the live pictures I've seen on BBC, CNN, Sky and various TV news reports I've seen in Germany and Spain, and through that I've been "indoctrinated". And the Israelis are obviously media ignorant!. Funny, I've always prided myself on having an OPEN mind of my own. I am quite clearly a puppet being manipulated by Islamist fundamentalists. Shall I blow myself up now, or later..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
