  1. and I believe there was a 70 y o tm in hawaii who became unresponsive and landed on a reef in the ocean If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  2. Yeah, Paris, France and Chattanooga, TN are probably considered equally high value targets for terrorists. Who has linked MOA to terrorists? What is going on at the "training camp" that is so nefarious? BTW, I used to go to a Christian Training Camp when I was a young, easily radicalized child. We trained with guns, and even more dastardly silent bows and arrows. We even practiced survivalist skills like camping, fire building, horseback riding, and disguising our faces with masks. Most people thought I was just going to a summer camp run by some Christian brothers, but I was really training to commit unspeakable acts. Someday some friar will walk past and whisper the secret action word. At that point, I will spring into action as I was trained. I can't decide if I'll make a keychain or paint some pottery. Either way, watch out imperialists bastards! Yes, it is. You are 100 miles away from a city where a couple years ago a lone gunman killed a few people. Do you really think that puts you in danger? I live about 40 miles from Washington DC. I grew up less than 10 miles from the city. I'm not the least bit concerned about terrorists. Well I live near Barrie ontario. That's about 50 miles from Toronto, ontario, and about 20 miles from the camp set up by a bunch of muslims a few years ago where they practiced shooting and blowing things up. They eventually were rounded up and convicted of attempting to kill multitudes of people in the downtown banking core of the city - they're called the Toronto 18, if you want to look them up. One of the major witnesses against them, a former employee at CSIS used to jump at one of the places I jump at. Later, some muslim immigrants were convicted of trying to blow up a VIA bridge between toronto/new york. and before that, some bombed/burned a building in a stripmall in ottawa, and another shot a soldier and stormed the parliament buildings in our nations capitol. Sooo.... Yes, terrorism IS a fact of life in Canada. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 3. any idea what year that was? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  4. The old thread said Israel, Denmark, Belgium, France were mandatory, no exceptions. Russia was suggested Ok, it is looking like Spain, Norway and Russia are mandatory aad since the old thread. What about Italy, Germany, Cyprus, Dubai, South Africa, Sweden or others not yet mentioned? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  5. mandatory everywhere in spain, or just empuriabrava? and is it mandatory for crw jumps, etc? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  6. I was actually asking about national parachuting federation rules, so USPA, not just FAA. Does USPA not require aads for all student jumps? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  7. Ok, after looking into this further, it seems that other than the dzs in quebec and skydive Toronto in Ontario, most other dzs in canada DO NOT REQUIRE aads for licenced, current skydivers. if you're a cdn and your dz does, and you want to mention it go ahead. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  8. Would foreign jumpers be required to use an aad when jumping their own equipment? I noticed you just said 'gear jumped by Norwegian licence holders...' If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  9. I know Burnaby, Gan and pst don't require them. I'm not sure about skydive Niagara. but since Burnaby probably has the most fun jumpers in Ontario I'd say that the statement the bigger Canadian dzs require aads to be too broad. Does Lyal require them at Eden Skydive? Not sure, but I haven't heard he does... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  10. I asked this question in 2006, but a lot may have changed since then, so I'm going to ask it again. I'm looking to know if the parachuting federation in your country mandates them, not just the dz you jump at. And are there any exceptions to the rule if they are mandatory. I;m looking for facts, not just 'when I was there 3 years they wouldn't let me jump without'. The old thread said Israel, Denmark, Belgium, France were mandatory, no exceptions. Russia was suggested but then someone said that was only a particular dz... If you want to add more about a dz that is mandatory, if it's big, or if you know how many dz's in your country vs how many don't require them that's fine, but like I said, the main focus is to know country-wide. Some countries require up to d-licence levels but d=licence levels can vary according to number of jumps. Are there exceptions when doing crw or if you have an rsl, etc... Thanks for your input... THIS IS NOT A 'SHOULD AADS BE MANDATORY OR NOT' POLL! If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  11. January this year was the coldest ever in southern Ontario. And February last year was the coldest ever there. I don't know that I can believe your data I hate to break it to you, but southern Ontario is not the world, nor even representative of it. maybe not - but at least I know I can trust my own data. Don't know about yours... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 12. January this year was the coldest ever in southern Ontario. And February last year was the coldest ever there. I don't know that I can believe your data - the scientists have emailed each other about concealing data that doesn't agree with them. How do we know they didn't take the raw temps and then 'estimate' them higher? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 13. Whatever you say. I would not have put it that way, but if that's what you got out of the discussion, have at it. Don Here is what you wrote. almost the entirety of the Republican party faithful are afflicted. I suspect this is a direct result for their disdain for higher education and contempt for people who have actually invested the time to develop expertise in any discipline other than sports. How could I have misunderstood that? It's pretty clear. I still think you made a personal attack on someone, calling them narrow-minded, and here you said Republicans aren't educated. And you don't seem to mind. I would also say that your speech about scientists welcoming challenges to their hypothesis doesn't pan out in the way I see some scientists saying that people who don't believe in global warming should be put in jail. Seems it only works in some cases.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  14. I think your hearing aid might be broken. You only seem to hear one side of every discussion. Don so this statement is NOT narrow-minded and ingnorant? Why bother to find out what really happened when the ignorant rumor fits your narrow minded view of the way things should be so much better? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  15. so republicans don't get degrees or diplomas? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  16. And you were privy to these "behind closed doors" conversations? I suspect not, but feel free to correct me if you were actually there and heard the discussion. I rather suspect that 43,000 people were punked into signing an unnecessary and irrelevant petition because they, like you, were all too ready to substitute their prejudiced view of the world for actual reality. Why bother to find out what really happened when the ignorant rumor fits your narrow minded view of the way things should be so much better? Oh yeah, Don why be so arrogant and condescending? I would almost call this a personal attack... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 18. This is a coded reference to bombmaking, right? I didn't make any references, "coded" or otherwise, to bombmaking, ...clockmaking, but not bombmaking. I think the new standard here is that if I don't come right out and state a position, one cannot be inferred (or is it "implied"?) maybe "deduced". Whooosh. Is this a slight against electricians and electronics specialists? Maybe you've been asleep for a few days. It refers to small town Texas police and high schools. funny, I thought it was a reference to kallend and banning guns If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 19. not taking Jews in as refugees is quite a bit different than Hitler's 'final solution', and the almost 1.5 million Jewish refugees that had to flee from his Nazi regime. Even trying to compare a reluctance to accept refugees with that murderous regime is ridiculous. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 21. this is a pic from my freak brother load, first weekend mr. douglas showed up at sandwich Illinois in '81 or '82. my buddy anvil is facing the camera, 12 o'clock and I'm in the outer row at 11 o'clock. I think it's a 27 way... Roger was supposed to be on the jump but he got called away to fly the 206 for some students so the cameraman took his slot and was in the formation I remember Jim Bohr was in the formation and he was the one who gave Anvil and me our freak brother numbers - I think mine is 1287. That was a great weekend. We showed up on Friday night and Roger asked where we were from, then said 'grab your gear, I'll take you up in the 206 right now in case weather craps out for the weekend', and he gave us a free jump. Weather held and we did some fun jumps for the weekend before driving back home... Just wondering if anyone else has pictures of their freak brother jumps, or anyone else's... 22. Statements like this are founded on the assumption that police stops are (or should be) comparable to a random sampling of the population, so any one individuals chance of being stopped is exactly the same as any other individual. Of course, the ACLU would also be upset if the police actually did stop people at random, with no reason other than "today it's just your turn". It is of course possible that some conscious or unconscious bias is at work. It is also possible that certain demographics are disproportionately likely to present valid reasons to be pulled over. These could include things like no tail lights, cracked windshield, no license plate, driving with headlights off after dark, speeding, excessively loud music, and so on, up to driving a vehicle that matches the description of a suspect vehicle near to where a crime has been reported. In my city we have a "no cruising" ordinance in the downtown area, which allows police to ticket you if they see you drive around the block more than twice within 10 minutes. I think it's a dumb law, as you may just be looking for a place to park, but it was intended to discourage "cruising". A lot of these things are (it seems to me) related to poverty; people with little money drive old worn out cars and may not have money to immediately fix a burned out headlight or a cracked windshield. Some of them are, frankly, related to age and cultural attitudes, such as playing music so loud the bass makes you think there is an earthquake happening and you are five cars back from the source of the noise. As we all know there is a relationship between wealth and race in this country. Where I live (college town) it seems most of the white kids are college students whose parents have provisioned them with a car worth about ten time what I can afford as a mere professor. If you see a 1970s era ragged-out Cadillac with one headlight, no functioning backup lights, no plates (except maybe an obviously ancient "Tag Applied For"), the hood held down with a piece of rope, and shiny new chrome hubcaps, the odds are overwhelming that the driver will be black. A stereotype for sure, but one you can see every day around here. Who is more likely to be pulled over, the person driving the old Cadillac with a half-dozen safety violations, or the person driving a fresh off the lot Lexus? It is possible that there is a bias at work driving the police to target minorities. I just don't think you can say that so definitively based on nothing other than a comparison to the demographic makeup of the population. I think you would have to actually examine the probable cause for the stops. You could also do an experiment, such as have white or black drivers drive the same vehicle with the same red flags around town for similar amounts of time. If the black drivers get pulled over more often than the white drivers do, driving the same vehicle in the same neighborhoods, then you would have a strong argument that bias was at work. Don It's also possible that blacks and whites live in different areas of the city, and that there are more complaints of vandalism and crime in certain areas of the city, leading to an increased police presence by request of the inhabitants. If police patrol the black areas of town more often and on foot as well as in cars, it's indeed possible that they will naturally stop more blacks than whites. I think it's also possible, although I don't know that there are stats kept on it, that certain demographics may well be more involved in crime than other demographics, so it may well be that the reason more are stopped is because more crimes are being committed by them. I'm not saying it is so, I'm saying it is possible. And that doesn't even mean that a higher percent of a certain demographic commit crimes, it could be the same percent committing more crimes each... Without statistics one won't know. Of course some people would then say, doesn't matter, they've had a rough time, so we shouldn't bother them about the way they live.... 24. Neither I nor most of the people I've talked to about it believe muslims are 'insane' for hating westerners... I (and many of those I've talked with) do believe they have to be stopped, if they are a danger to others. That is one reason why I don't agree with the default position of many people here that 'normal' people don't kill others. In some cultures it is quite 'normal', such as in certain middle eastern countries when women are stoned to death for being raped or having pre-marital sex. That's not an 'insane' action, it is a 'culturally ingrained' action. Which isn't to say it's morally right, but it certainly isn't a) abnormal in the circumstances, which we see from how it happens again and again, or b) insane. Do you believe all the Hutus were insane in Rwanda in 1994? it's estimated 200000 Hutus participated in the genocide. What about in Bosnia? Were all the factions killing each other insane? Unfortunately mans' history shows that one DOESN'T have to be insane to kill. Which is of course, why one has to be prepared to defend one's values. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  25. While it may not be normal to throw cat feces at neighbors homes it certainly isn't crazy. I know a guy that went to someone's house and used a manure spreader to spray it. He got charged with mischief but it certainly wasn't crazy. And he always angry after that cause every time he drove past the guys house, he had the best lawn on the street...
