  1. Good guess, but the jumper is a Canadian (although that picture was taken in Fla. skies). This Canadian did move to the US. He was in to style and accuracy, though, in fact the second picture is at the Canadian Team eliminations in 1964. I'm sure the cigarettes are cameos. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  2. when? Jan. 1963 possibly the first 16mm freefall movies shot in Canada Who? Bill Cole (chuteless) on his 22nd jump The lump opposite the camera is indeed a counterweight. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  3. Yes. Cameos, I believe. The when would be sometime around 1964. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  4. Ok, I'm not going to ask who, where, when, just who? Both shots are the same guy. The pictures were taken by chuteless, so cole is not really a clue. (Looks like there might be a problem with the first pic, I may have to repost it later) If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  5. I find it a little hard to believe that Scotty would have been allowed in to a USPA meeting anyways. Unless he's changed, that is! If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  6. I don't know about that.... I seem to remember descriptions of 'roman candle' malfunctions which pre-dated sleeves.... If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  7. One of the threads on the incidents forum contained this quote. A "Roman Candle" is where the jumper is wrapped inside the canopy making it look like a fiery ball from a roman candle plumeting toward the earth. Those were more common during the round parachute days and are mostly unheard of now. __________________________________________________ I've never heard that before. I've always understood a roman candle was simply a classic streamer usually under a round canopy. Anyone else ever heard this? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. 8. I was in favor of impeaching Bill Clinton. For that matter I wasn't impressed with Hillary's ethical behavior either. The difference of course is that Bill got worried about his image and/or the bogeyman, sexual harassment and then entered into a conspiracy to cover it up (in my opinion); where Jan is obviously willing to let people know her opinions in a website that is supposedly still up, and is willing to stand up for her beliefs. I believe some people here are saying USPA didn't want to defend the lawsuit, not that what Jan said was untrue. That is a major distinction. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  9. unwittingly provided confidential and damaging information to the oposing attorney The key word there is 'unwittingly'. I'd argue that it is just incompetence, not illegal or unethical. On the other hand it might be considered that for the opposing attorney to act on that questionably obtained information could be considered unethical, and even in some cases illegal. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  10. Frankly it had to be a majority of the board that initiated the lawsuit; if Jan is the reason the organization had to settle, one would say as an executive of the organization she would have to answer TO HER EMPLOYERS, IN OTHER WORDS, THE MEMBERSHIP. In other words, the settlement should be made available to the members, the things Jan did to force the organization into a settlement, and how much it cost the organization as a result. A person is entitled to make a mistake; it would be up to the membership then to decide if they still believed in her and whether or not to continue to support her as their representative. It is NOT the king's decision - all he should be able to do is make a recommendation. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. 11. If that was the case, there are seveal other DZ's who should be shut down for taking underage AFF's, doing RW with two tandem pairs, and breaking other BSR's or decieving their customers _________________________________________________ Bingo! 12. Regardless of who pushed for it, a lot of people on the board must have gone along for the lawsuit to go forward, trying to blame one person is both pointless and vindictive. (In my opinion) Now, if she did anything unethical, or rather, illegal, during the debate, in order to come up with or to dish dirt, that could be grounds for something like this. But I don't believe she did. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  13. Yeah, that's who I was thinking of. Don't think I ever met him. There is a new book out about it called the Kentucky Bluegrass Conspiracy, I think. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  14. beats waking up to find Andrew Thornton dead in your driveway. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  15. The person who suggested that maybe it was a confederate of Mayfield who called had a good idea, however, if this was the case, the confederate might have wanted to call while Mayfield was still in the air as to make his alibi even more rock solid. _________________________________________________ Maybe the confederate was supposed to pick him up and get him to a phone to call, but when he hadn't showed up by 0-dark-30, said confederate went to plan 'b' , got to a phone to make the call, then returned to find him. (or had other confederates out looking while he made the call).... It's all just speculation, but not knowing him, I'd like to think whoever got away with it did get some satisfaction out of the money. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone

  17. Definately beans. You get lost in the corn trying to get out. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  18. __________________________________________________ How can the fbi be so sure that the phone call actually came in from Maybield? Couldn't he have had one of his buddies call? This may have been mentioned already but when was the first time Mayfield was actually seen by law enforcement after the incident? Any ideas? If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  19. "I wonder if he wants to do this as much as I do?" me, at about 1000 feet, looking over at my buddy in freefall. Then he smiled, and we did a hookup before dumping our reserves. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  20. A quote from Tom Piras "All we're asking for.... is perfection. One time." Or from my buddy Bruce McConkey after a crw wrap "I thought I was gonna die.... and I couldn't think of anyone else I'd rather die with!" If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  21. How about "Blue skies, red eyes" If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  22. There's a great article about it by Lyal in one of the Canpara magazines this year, I think. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  23. _____________________________________________ Actually, that was 1912, and he was an Austrian named Franz Reicholt. The same day he did that Frederick Law did a jump from the torch of the Statue of Liberty which was on the front page of the NY Times. (I believe it was Feb 13). Incidently I'd seen a picture of Cecil Mackenzie in a Canadian Geographic magazine article. There was no other information about him, just the picture. Michael Abrams (author of Birdmen, Batwings etc.) did ask me about him, but I guess he didn't find any information or it would have gone into the book. (I wasn't that impressed with the book, but then I knew the story of at least one of the guys featured quite intimately and most of the other stories from other sources, so there wasn't much new for me). If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  24. ______________________________________________ That's true. I once made the mistake of telling my parents that while I attended a seminar for work in the big smoke, I would be taking my rig along and jumping a building that night. I was excited and looking forward to it. I had well over 1000 skydives at the time so to me it wasn't a big deal, I just mentioned it in passing. My dad later told me that my mother didn't sleep that night, so after that I never told them anything I was thinking of doing. Ignorance is bliss. If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead. Bruce McConkey 'I thought we were gonna die, and I couldn't think of anyone
  25. My 2900th and 3000th were both this year. 2900 I didn't worry about, but I hoped to make 3000a fun jump - hopefully a back to back 4-way -- (4 way rw followed by 4-crw). In which case it would really have to be on a weekend. In the summer you could say I'm full-time, and I tried to work it that I finished Friday at 2999, and could do the 3000th on the first load Saturday, but weather for Wed, Thurs, Fri was bad, so I started working the weekend and just went right through. 3000 ended up being a tandem during the next week. My 1999th jump was a demo into the Hamilton Airshow (pretty big affair over here) in 1993, followed by my 2000th 6 days later on a demo into Coronation Park in Oakville (a much smaller affair). 1000 was a fun 3-way in 1984, but I see I didn't even write down who the others on it were, so it wasn't that memorable.
