How different is free-flying in the sky compared with tunnel?
chemist replied to PixieUK's topic in Freeflying
lol because simulator does NOT equal real flying. Whereas tunnel is free fall and identical to real skydiving especially for the purposes of progression. You freefly at terminal velocity in both freefall and in the tunnel -
tunnel. after about 5 hours of tunnel you'll be one of the more solid sit flyers at most dropzones cause you'll be able to take multiple docks and look good doing it After about 10 hours you'll be in the top ~20% of free flyers at most dropzones since you'll be able to fly head down well and possibly transition from sit to head down

Advising Students to "cut-away" via ground radio command
chemist replied to Scrumpot's topic in Instructors
Just don't yell "CUTAWAY!!!" on the ground so a guy on final hears it (as opposed to the guy with a spinning mal somewhere between 2-3000'), then cuts away and dies. I think that youtube video got taken down because it shows a fatality and I can't find it anymore. -
This sounds rational. I like rational

With 200 Jumps loading 1,46 (Sabre 2 135)
chemist replied to enta's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
stay on your 150 for at least another 100 jumps. -
can I get more opinions on the triathlon for wingsuit. Considering that as my next canopy. It'll be wingloaded to about ~1.4
-
you'll need to at least attach a keg of beer in place of a human. You can't jump a tandem rig solo

wingsuit

if we pay money and they don't reach their goal would we GetItBack? haha get it. But seriously this looks like a really good idea cause it's small and only activates in a cutaway, I thought it was gonna be like some big battery thing. If it is gonna be $200 per unit I could see it working. just imagine you are traveling and have a cutaway the morning of the day of your flight. Would be nice to be able to find it quick

anyone wingsuit a triathlon?

Proposed Amendment of BSR concerning TI Medical
chemist replied to fencebuster's topic in Tandem Skydiving
they ask if you've ever been convicted or charged with a misdemeanor or felony, thus it is a background check especially since answering yes affects your chances of getting the medical. If you answer yes to a felony I believe they automatically do a diagnosis of a personality disorder and deny. Not sure how hard it would be to get a 3rd class with a felony even if the circumstances around it were a joke but I'm sure the burden would be through the roof anyways. There is actually a somewhat recent movement to place convicted criminals (particularly felons) into a protected class similar to minorities -
because I want a cool small rig but I have to jump a bigger canopy for wingsuit
-
Well the lifespan is not really a huge concern I suppose it is all relative... I guess I'm just looking for peoples reviews on it to see if the reduced lifespan is worth it If I get a 150 pilot instead I'm more likely to keep my old rig for longer for wingsuit and thus can't sell it. If I get the epicine I may be able to have a free fly and ws rig in one, being able to sell my old rig

Skydiving is safe – but not as safe as you might think
chemist replied to maggyrider's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Thanks for crunching all those numbers to give us something interesting to read. although statistics are always flawed in this case it may paint a general picture. Unfortunately I think it may be ever higher than 30 times for you since dangerousness depends on many factors and by doing 500 jumps a year you are probably engaging in more difficult and dangerous forms of skydiving (faster canopies, wing suits, large group jumps -> increased risk canopy collisions and the list goes on) furthermore by doing so many jumps you are more likely to find yourself getting lax with a gear check from fatigue or complacency. Perhaps your numbers account for all of it, perhaps it evens out when you factor in your experience that adds to your safety as a jumper. At the end of the day calling skydiving safe is really just a defense mechanism against wuffos in our workplaces or outside life who pass judgement on us and think they are better and more mentally sound than us for not jumping out of airplanes. And to those I say it's safer than crossing the street to get a hamburger!! Could get hit by a bus -
More often than not its nothing personal, that's how I've learned to see it. Also once the legends at the dz see you're actually putting in the work they will start treating you differently and actually jump with you and that's how you know it wasn't personal to begin with. There could also be a rite of passage sort of thing, everybody has to put up with being underestimated, ignored and not jumped with so its like yea if you go into it thinking you're an 'equal' or worse, think you're better then you'll be excluded because actually you are not good but think you're good and gonna contribute equally to the jump when actually not everybody has to go through lots of shit to get in the in Unless of course you have large breasts and/or a pretty face then you could certainly bypass a lot of the initial exclusivity of the free fly world I suppose

and it has to be done by a doctor that hates them, not by their regular family doctor! -
Proposed Amendment of BSR concerning TI Medical

A medical exam cannot ensure this since doctors are not experts in tandem skydiving. However, the medical can keep felons and DUI convicts from becoming TI's! -
So I am thinking of getting an epicine for wingsuiting as I have been pretty impressed with the quality of the squirrel suits (they fly like a dream), so I have confidence that quality engineering has transferred over into their canopies. Big downside of course is the lifespan, I don't want to have a separate rig for wingsuiting since it's actually easier to put a wingsuit on a rig than it is to travel with 2 rigs. Squirrel simply says 'it depends on many factors' how long your canopy lasts. So are we looking at 600-700 jumps, or over 1000+ range?

Is it safe for me to get trained to skydive?
chemist replied to BeaveCake's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I had the same problem on my first tandem but it wasn't from anxiety it was just hard to breath from the wind in free fall. My instructor said I'll have a lung full of air at the door which is enough for a skydive. First I took breaths through my nose then after about 5-10 jumps I was able to breath normally. -
Video camera limits and experience (and new tech)
chemist replied to tkhayes's topic in Safety and Training
this is the stupid, it's not about arbitrary jump numbers. Read my above post. It's about knowing the dangers and how to minimize risk. Also, when you're under 200 jumps that's when you MOST want that footie bro. You're new to an exciting sport, later on you start caring less and less about footage cause it's all the same thing over and over -
Video camera limits and experience (and new tech)
chemist replied to tkhayes's topic in Safety and Training
When I started jumping camera I was oblivious to the danger simply because nobody had told me. I had to slowly figure out the pieces on my own by seeing stuff on the internet. Did I know the danger of hooking a D ring on exit? A reserve bridle entanglement? No, but I did have the magical jump number to jump camera! Jump numbers don't matter, someone with 100 jumps could learn to jump camera safely and someone with 200 jumps could have no clue when they 1st put on a camera. People need to be shown videos of close calls to understand what can go wrong (a video of a reserve bridle entanglement may really motivate someone to ensure they have a helmet cutaway system), you need to be shown all the different types of snag points and different types of systems (if jumping G3 with no cutaway, extremely important for camera to be totally snag free). There should be a class just like there is a water training class. There could be a video showing an entanglement, a jumper hooking a D ring on exit and showing systems with non-obvious snag hazards. -
is it ok if you looke behind and to the side of you to check for traffic before doing them? Or what if you know you're the last canopy in the air (last out in a wingsuit, higher pull?).
-
So in other words, the margin for error is now razor-thin, and the equipment is much less forgiving of any problems or anything that isn't perfect. This would be a big pro for 2-canopy rigs. I'm not familiar with BASE gear. Will anybody argue that a BASE rig is statistically safer than the (incredibly reliable) standard skydiving configuration? If it isn't, then using BASE gear is just more likely to result in the DZO needing to take care of your body and deflect bad publicity. yes a BASE canopy is statistically safer, it is designed to open on heading much better (it has to be to avoid cliff strikes), they also tend to be bigger so the chance of a spinning malfunction is low. However, the risk of a pilot chute malfunction or horseshoe, baglock or something like that is probably the same? (but even there they may be designed to be less likely to bag lock?) So yes much safer for the BASE rig to work, the problem is there is no back up one if it didn't work.

Those who jump without an AAD. Are you okay with dying?
chemist replied to stayhigh's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
only people who have jumped out of airplanes without parachutes are 'real' skydivers, not like all the pussies on here -
Should D license requirements be changed?
chemist replied to Croc's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think people should have to do 3 naked jumps for a D license. 1st one you can wear underwear, 2nd one full naked and 3rd one has to be a naked tandem.
