Don't worry, it's not hard at all! We do have a nice aerial photo of the airport, and before you go, you will always be briefed by your instructor at the photo as to where your holding area will be, where you should enter your pattern, and where you should be doing your turns. You will be on radio, but as someone said, don't rely on it, because it does sometimes fail. Just make sure that before you and your instructor leave that photo, that you are totally comfortable with where you will need to be. As you progress through your training, they are still going to take you to the photo, and they are going to start asking you to tell them where you should be holding, entering pattern, and flying pattern, so pay a lot of attention in the beginning so that you are not just going where they tell you, but you are learning why you are going there. It'll make things easier later on for you. Good luck!! I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Click Here for more information!

You know, there are people here on this board, jumpers mind you, with MS. How do you think it makes them feel to read that? A diagnosis of MS is not an automatic life sentence. JT, thanks for your words, they are so true! There are many people with MS who go on living very productive and happy lives for many, many years. Some of them never develop the debilitating symptoms. Some do, and choose to continue to live their lives anyway. Sorry, but I've known several people with MS, and I just don't think that they would be better off dead. There are far worse things that could happen to all of us! I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Click Here for more information!

I totally agree! We are drowning in mindless entertainment...it's very refreshing to see some entertainment that actually engages your brain for a change! For those who don't get it...that's the great thing about Hollywood, there is something for everyone. Personally, holding a degree in Philosophy, I love The Matrix movies, as they center around philosophy. But there are other movies that I think are a total waste of a perfectly good 2 hours of my life. But hey, to each his own. I'm not going to go around trashing those movies just because I don't like them. I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Click Here for more information!

Sunshine, our flight arrives at 10:52am on the 25th, and we are renting a car. Small car though, so I'm sure we could fit you, but with the luggage, we'd probably not be able to fit anyone else. Let me know if you want a ride. I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Click Here for more information! -
I fall down and worship at your feet...I thought I was doing really well with a 111.5, that would have been 115.5 if not for one missed 's'. I did have a slight bit of help from my husband, but not too much, and I was rushing. My question is how many people got #7 right: "I'll love you with all the joy of living, when the lights go out in blank blank blank." Erasure was one of my favorite bands back then, but that song was not one of their few somewhat known songs, so I'm skeptical that many people go it right. But you did, right? And "Colitas!" Well, now I finally know at least! I'm a die-hard Eagles fan, but...well, now I know. I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Click Here for more information!

Don't have to even look it up...not the year I was born, but in 1989 on my birthday, the Berlin Wall fell.

How can a student defend "Face" Planting herself?
Luna replied to Designer's topic in Safety and Training
Yeah, he is. Student with roughly 10 jumps, off radio and "off AFF" was doing hop & pops (low clouds, so everyone was). This was her first time in real traffic, because normally students are out last and open high. First jump she scares the crap out of everyone when she is ahead of her pattern, so she decides to bleed altitude by doing a (braked) 360+ at under 500 feet, first turning to head straight toward another canopy, then straight at the taxiing plane, quite close to it. She gets talked to by several people, including the S&TA and at least 2 instructors. 2nd jump she decides that in order to not make everyone yell at her anymore, she will not shoot for the main landing area, but a secondary area just off from it. While that would have been fine, for some reason when she landed there she never turned into the wind, just landed crosswind, and then "face-planted." She said she thought she was going to stand it up (for the first time), but just went on over instead. She was uninjured, just embarassed. She got another several talks after this. Skydive Arizona Dropzone.com 2nd Annual Holiday Boogie
Luna replied to sangiro's topic in The Bonfire
Well, that's good to know! I guess I've just jumped with some very floaty people, then! And they even had weight on! My instructors were telling me that I fall fast all through my training too, so I've just got it in my head that I do. Now I'm feeling a bit more confident that I might be able to stay with some people. Thanks! -

Luna replied to sangiro's topic in The Bonfire
Hey, I never thought of that...what a great idea! Seriously, I finally got something to record my speeds, and it looks like I'm getting around 127 in my normal fall position (and I'm sure I can go faster with little trouble!). I did spend a LOT of time in the tunnel working on slow fall, but not on slow fall while I'm turning points! Don't know how that will go, but if we have another fast-faller with us, we should be set! If not, they can just wear a bunch of weight! I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Click Here for more information! -

Luna replied to sangiro's topic in The Bonfire
Hey, I'm on the novice dives, too, and I fall really fast, too! So far the only real RW work I have is in the tunnel, but that should change soon. Going to participate in some 4-way scrambles next weekend to get a little real experience. Can't wait to jump with you! -
I was there right after the upgrade, and there were issues at that time. It died at least twice while I or someone else in my camp was actually in the tunnel, then there was the time when they couldn't get it started for us and we had to go in late (and those are just the ones I know of)...they did make sure we got all of our time in (but then we were their captive audience for 3 whole days, so it was pretty easy). I'm sorry to hear that they are still having problems. I'm sure they will get it resolved as quickly as they can! I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I just got back from the Airspeed tunnel camp, and this is what one of the coaches told me: He said when he was learning knee turns, and they say "drop a knee," he got all confused as to what that really meant. Instead, think of it as "lift a knee to your chest." That is roughly the movement you are looking for. The leg should also be slightly bent toward the outside of your body as well, but that's a fine point. And like everyone else says, practice on the ground as much as you can first. Good luck!

I did 2 hours and 15 minutes over 3 days. Yeah, you will hurt. So? If I had it to do over, I'd have done at least 2 1/2 hours. Do as much as you want to do and as much as you can afford to do. The pain is manageable, the tunnel time is worth it! You will be getting a coach, right? I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Click Here for more information!

20 times? I'm so jealous! Actually, in my six times, the only serious burns I got were on the 40 foot walk that was kickin' hot, and I totally lost my focus and concentration right before I went. Bad mistake. It hurt from the first step, but I kept it up all 40 feet, still going at a normal firewalk pace, so I attribute little validity to the idea that it "works" because your feet are in contact with the coals for only a very short time. I still maintain that the proper state of mind is the key, but that is just my opinion, albeit based on some good experiences, with good outcomes and bad. And I have also walked both wet and dry. One interesting note about coals sticking and causing burns. Where I usually firewalk, they have someone when you stop (and there are 2 people there to stop you) who sprays your feet with a hose, especially aiming between the toes. You also end up standing on a pile of sod that has been soaked by the hose spraying the feet of everyone before you, so sticking coals are not much an issue. Of course, where I do mine, there is someone who could theoretically be sued if someone were to get seriously hurt (yes there are waivers, but still...), so they take many extra precautions. I'm looking forward to walking in Eloy. Just because I haven't done a spontaneous, un-structured one before doesn't mean I'm not game to do one. Commonly misused words in dropzone.com forums and rec.skydiving
Luna replied to peek's topic in The Bonfire
You also have an error on the def. for "stair" where you put "yoy" it should be "you". I'll go with Andrea on the "your" and "you're", but my biggest peeve is the now pervasive use of "could of," "should of" or "would of" instead of the proper "could've," "should've," "would've" OR "could have," "should have," "would have." That one just drives me crazy!! I'm walking a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Click Here for more information! -
Okay, I've read that there was some firewalking last year at the boogie. I've just found out that 1) I'm going to the boogie this year and 2) I am not going to get my fix of firewalking in November as planned (I've done 6 so far), so was wondering if this will be repeated this year, and any details on how it was conducted. Also, if you need someone to help with it, I've "worked" 4 of them (the ones I do are very structured and organized) and so I know a lot about how to set it up, etc. and also a lot about the mental preparation to do one (were there a lot of first-timers last year?), so I'd be happy to help organize one for this year.

I'm happy to report that I just confirmed to Betsy that my husband & I will be attending the boogie. I'm so excited! I've been catching up on this thread now that we are going, and had to comment on this: I just got back from the Airspeed tunnel camp and totally know what you are saying! He's so much fun and so nice, too! I got to fly with him for 20 minutes and had the best time with him. He even offered to drive me to the airport when my pre-arranged ride got very complicated (would you have said no? I sure couldn't!). And while I'd already thought a bit about attending the boogie, I was not very committed, but Craig telling me that I should come pretty much sealed the deal for me. So, I'll see you all in December!
