I understand RWS is producing a "Micro Sigma" for 360 reserve and 340 or 350 sigma main. That would be my buy if I had 11 grand to spend. I have owned strong and sigma and while sticker price is higher on sigma, i have had to replace MUCH fewer spare parts (drogues, bags etc). Any other buy than a sigma you have to start to think about resale value too. josh

Hand Cam Video: Do you do it? What's the arrangement?
skydiveoc replied to efs4ever's topic in Instructors
I think you're underpricing your hand cam price and de-valuing it. $65 and paying out $30 more seems more suitable in the hand cam market. -
I have seen people with stow bands on their Javelin's protector flap, securing the bottom of the protector flap to the bottom of the last flap. Any thoughts?
-
I closed my NJ reserve and found the last flap is sitting over the tuck flap of the bottom flap, making it impossible to tuck the protector flap. What have I done wrong? josh

Im looking to get a .25 black eye lens for handy cam with my camera that has a 34mm thread diameter. Am I going to vignette if I step up ring to 37? Or should I step down to 30mm? Logic tells me to step up to allow more light in. Am I wrong?

Quote You want all firewire ports for both input and out You might want to look around ebay for one of these. There not cheap. Videonics MXPro DV 4 Channel Digital Video Mixer Item number: 7606530628 Are you using one of these? My mouth waters with firewire in and out but for around $3500 my customers will have to suffer for analogue. You can buy a sweet nonlinear system for that. If I could find one for $2000 Id buy it.

Way cool and cookie lenses: where to order
skydiveoc replied to tetra316's topic in Photography and Video
anyone other than waycool that has a blackeye or .25? I need one with a 34mm lens diameter. Will a step up ring cause vignette with a lens this wide? josh -
I agree with mi hammy. Booties were a 90's thing. Pain inthe arse to maintain, need to get them off if you surf. To be a more rounded camera flyer, you need to freefly and booties do not fit the equation. I like a bigger wing, medium to tight torso and thigh and bell bottom baggyness from knee to ankle to balance out drop speed and pulse recovery. If you watched the X games you'll see camera flyers who needed the most range, slow to fast. Not one was wearing booties. Josh.

think about going to the tunnel and practicing big blasts of fast tp slow fall rate. That is, learn to hover slow, then drop down gull winged then blast back up. You'll also need to know how to tranition from belly to head cleanly as novice skysurfers are the hardest of all to film and can drop out of the sky quickly. Be carefull. They also have a tendency to go low as there are stability concerns. josh

Has anyone tried or heard of anyone using Canon's Optura 600? Check it out. I need a handy cam camera. Has been compared in other forums to have similar picture quality to pc 1000. It has one 1 3/4" chip vs 3 1/6" chips. I prefer and have always used Sony as well but our choices are limited if you want a vertical camera and looking for other pc1000 options

Does diamond make a .2 now? Their web site only lists .3 and .5?
-
your image doesn't seem very wide. Are you using .25 black eye? It is noticably wider than a .3. Sore shoulder on 4 hand cams? I had a guy do 15 in one day. Try to limit arm out spirals under canopy. Do them with your arm a bit low where you can support it better. Try to frame the student more instead of you. It is tempting to point the lens at yourself but it must be lower. Im curious to check out the new Canon Optura 600. Supposed to be their answer to pc1000 / PC 350.

anyone using this 1 chip camera especially for handcam? Boasts a superior picture to pc 1000 WITH 1 1/8" CHIP. josh
-
All this is much too dangerous. Go hand cam instead. No tracking necessary.

I heard of a guy in guam, aussie, who had 12,000 tandems and that was about 3-4 years ago. A friend of mine went there to work and had 2000 tandems and was the LEAST experienced of a 8 person staff.

Can you still buy a 350? Where? uj

Hey im looking for a brazililan Tm for next season who trains jiu jitsu. www.skydiveoc.com I am wondering with this A2 after 200 jumps, the microline gets so out of trim that it becomes cumbersome to fly...especially for swoopers. SET 400's were notorious for getting out of trim after 200 jumps josh

RWS has told me that several DZ's are putting a stoe band on the slider and stoeing both steering lines on it to keep it orderly in the laydown. I love my Sigmas and feel they have superior bottom end than any other canopy. As far as flying flat, try flying a SEt 400! But...I have 8 chops in 2 years (about 2000 tandems) on sigmas and 0 on Icarus with the same numbers...all tension knots. Instructors pack mostly. A friend has had 2 canopies where drogues were torn off, lost and one main sigma lost. There is obviously a design flaw with that drogue attachment that PD refuses to acknowledge. Interested in trying an A2 but I worry about material, a triathlon i owned about 10 years ago felt like paper mache after 500 jumps and I have my concerns about line trim and microline.

What's new with the Sony DCR-PC1000 (vs. the PC-350)
skydiveoc replied to SudsyFist's topic in Photography and Video
That's not a floating iris problem, lots of cameras do it...happens more often on harder openings though. I am using 6 pc-1000's and they do that no more than my trv-17 or pc-110. I have had zero floating iris problems with the pc-1000's. Hope this helps... What mode do you use for the fastest shutter speed ? (except for progressive rec) I cant find a sport mode. -
thinking of buying PC350 - advice please
skydiveoc replied to frost's topic in Photography and Video
I would go for the 350...cant find em anywhere! -
I would question why I worked at a DZ that would ask me to work with anyone that is not competent. Ya gotta love those "I can't make a mistake" statements.... You must really be a god to feel that way. IMO, just because it hasn't caused a problem does not mean it will not cause a problem (or at least add to a problem). Its interesting to me to see people say it adds no safety issues when we talk regularly about how adding a camera to a skydiver that does not have someone strapped to them is a huge deal. Sounds like you really have a handle on all the issues involved. Uh...who is saying they cant make a mistake...Uh...who is saying it adds no safety risks?

What's new with the Sony DCR-PC1000 (vs. the PC-350)
skydiveoc replied to SudsyFist's topic in Photography and Video
Is there no sports mode with this camera? There is the floating iris problem on opening shock where is zooms out of focus then back in. -
I dont know of any incidents with hand cam, but it is a new concept. I am sure there will be. Hell, we're having "incidents" with Cypreses now and no one is talking about banning them. I do know of several incidents, even fatalities involving camera men colliding with tandem pairs. I see so many posts by aspiring camera flyers that are scary..."ive got 100 jumps and followed out my first tandem yesterday with my new camera helmet..." The tandem master allowing that probably thinks hand cam is dangerous! Hand cam is for the cessna dz with full time instructors who make a living skydiving, not part timers. The reason being currnecy of jumping and income. The part time guy just doesn't value the extra $30 hand cam pay like the full time guy does. He has a regular job and does tandems for enjoyment and maybe to pay for recreational jumping. Hand cam seems like an added risk to him. Full time guy looking to do 30-40 jumps a week with 40% hand cam likes the additional $400 per week pay! Yes a GOOD outside camera guy gets a better image than handy. But, Good handy gets a better image than a mediocre or new camera flyer. My experience also has the customer desiring to be in the plane with their friend rather than splitting up 2 loads even though outside video is better. Definitely though, handy is not for everybody. Just my 2 cents!
