how far do you live from the DZ?
cheneyneel replied to bunge's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I like to make about 400 jumps a year but it is hard becaue I live 3 hours away from my DZ.. -
Thats the great thing about freeflying you only need two people and camera.. I am part of a college team (sometimes when the weather and location of meet is right)but we are from different colleges so there is no affiliation with the school..

man the theory I have always been tought is conventional elipticals no more than 2:1 is the most for Peak performance anything over 2:1 for Peak performance you need cross-braced.. But that is just a rue of thumb I have always ben taught.. man it is a good question though.. and I would like to hear other opinions because I have a conventional eliptical that I load moe than two to one and I know I am passed its peak performance.. What are a canopy's characteristics when over loaded is a question I cant seem to get answered that is really related to your quesion...

I use a titanium .45 for freeflying and anything else I do in the air or on the ground.. .45 and .42 are readily cheap and easy to find.. Just remember that the lens realy dosent get the shot if you are not there to get it.. being there is more than half the game.. either with video or stills...

Video of Parasail cutaways from PCB swoop comp?
cheneyneel replied to parachutist's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
you already named brother.. You gotta love people like him.. -
Hey man take a look at the RAWA's.. Cheaper and they are bad ass.. custon fit and such....

Hey my bru.. Go with the boneheads.. I know that the Rand is weak to american dollars but it would be well worth the money to find one, used or new.. Look for classified ads and such... Since you are new you might have a lot of luck buying really nice and strong gear used, instead of new..

One thing that I have incorporated lately with flat turns like you are talking of is harnes movement with the use of rear risers.. I seem to get flatter turns using a crabing type of motion.. Right now I have a airlocked canopy so I dont know how much of a difference that is making (if at all) because of stall speed.. But I really do my flat turns in a similar fashion as you are explaing.. and I have had a positive outcome when very consistant with it... I think that the most important thing is to know how your canopy will react.. and only do those things. I have found that some of the most info I get with canopies on small precise movements always comes from CRW dogs.. I suggest sitting down with one and talking with them.. I think they soend more time under canopies than anyone else..(other than canopy teams)which would also be good advisors..

Please remember that you can change speeds greatly from an actual HD position to (de-arched) slightly on your back position.. Please think about what body positions do what for seperation and how it works in reverse.. There have been a couple of freefly incedents in the past few weeks involving seperation and trying to become relative again... Not that you shouldnt do it by all means dont thinkn that I am saying not to!! You should try to work on it.. Flying on your back is very useful and can become quite fun and visually stimulating but please think about what you are doing.. I remember that when I first started skydiving instructors would tell me when I go home become a arm chair skydiver.. To sit and visualize what are the positive and negative effects of my body position with the relative wind.. Do the same.. It will help you think about it more clearly when you are wanting to carve and other back flying in freeflying..

I thought it never rains in So. Cal... If it is windy grab a big wheel like you used to ride as a kid a large round and use your imagination on the run way.. If you have a golf cart. long rope and a body board you can board the pond......

I know people that have more than a 1000 jumps and they can only fly like they have made 50 in the past 50 years... Jumps numbers does not equal knowledge... Only education does.. i know a few kids that have 500 jumps but they are the most in-tuned in the air and educated in skydiving than 5000 jump gods.. Padding jump number is stupid because if you make a stupid remark and have a shit load of jumps then you are more likely to be considered an idiot ..

Oh yea.. My Jedei doesnt like the wind at all.. It does become difficult for really long spots.. I kind of consider it like a Velocity in the terms that it is a (two turn canopy when loaded heavily) You have two turns then you need to land... But that isonly when loaded heavily.. My friend Linette jumped one and was always a well behaved canopy and made it back from any long spots, loaded about 1.4:1... So give what you will be loading it a considerable thought before you buy an older canopy...
-
Just remember that the Jedei is an older canopy.. I own a Jedei 105 and it flyies great..But I get more out of other conventional eliptical canopies.. The nose on the Jedei is a little out dated and that makes a difference..BUT that is about the only real difference between the new elipticals and the older Jedeis.. For reference I bought mine for 400$ with 400 jumps on it.. If you arent getting a really good deal buy a newer canopy... And I am a Jedei owner and love my Jedei BUT I am just giving you the reality of the canopy.. Also not all Jedei's are the same.. I have jumped a few that had consistantly the craziest openings I have ever had... You really just need to jump it because if it is a crazy one you will know right off the bat becasue it will rap up quickly..

Was it a spinning dive? A tension knot could have been a reasonable cause... Does the canopy dive really well just from harness imput?Going back to the question was it a spinning dive.... Swopping can be done very effiecently from just harness imputs... If the canopy dives really well that could be another cause?maybe..

I had a bad expierence with a landowner.. It was in Canada at a boogie.. I landed in his field after a mal and he chased me out, he fucking stole my freebag too.. He would not listen to reason.. Bastard!! I cant believe people are like that... Also carring things on you is always good.. Sometimes there are days that there are greater chances of landing off than others.. So sometimes you dont have to carry money(especially since I am always broke) and other things.. But then there are some days that one or two people land off on every load, so those would be the good days to carry a little more than normal.. I freefly alot and the only pocket I have is on my leg and when I carry a cell phone it really takes a beating.. So sometimes carrying something ALL THE TIME is more trouble than it is worth.. But I really like the hand held radio idea.. thats pretty cool...

I always keep a pull up on my rig.. I usually my smokes and a lighter when people start to land off on a consistant basis on a day.. last week spots were really bad at ASC and I landed off and packed in the field I landed in and sat on the porch of the people house while the lady brought me a glass of tea before I started my hike.. You always want to be able to pack when you land off incase you really have a long hike in front of you....
-
Man I am a big guy.. 240lbs out of the door.. I pondered the same questions when getting a new rig.. And with advice like people here are giving..DEMO DEMO DEMO.. I found that after putting 20 jumps on a PD126R I found it very suitable to land anywhere.. Plus it is small when packed eventhough it is actually 135 sq feet or so in realy measurements.. DEMO, DEMO,DEMO is all I cant tell you from expierence..

Brother I was turning different docks in a sit before I ever turned points on my belly.. Find a friend to progress with.. Constantly talk about safty with them and just jump.. Watch a lot of freefly videos and jump!!! But talk about safty constantly!!!
-
I have put a 100 jumps on a 120 Velocity at 2:1 and it constantly opened great.. Sometimes searching for a heading though...But still I dont have enough expierence with Velocities, but could it be from not loading it enough? Just a general question I dont know if you can under weigh a velocity and it affect oenings.. Did you ask PD that?..
-
what is a H-mod... Is that the modification that Precision does to canopies?
-
Let me note that there is a big difference in what a hybrid is and what a 3-D dive is.. Major difference!!!
-
Guys I dont know but doing 3-D dives I think are the most aggresive, difficult, and fun dives to do.. Add a little tracking and a swoop and damn that is some skill.. Some belly flyers ask me why I freefly all the time and I answer with a question like "Can you come into a round in any of the three major body positions while flying?" and they just look at me like they have never thought of it like that and say no.. and i recieve this satisfaction of being a multidemensional flyer and being good at them all.. And that my freinds is what the belly gods cant take away from you and is what is making a minority the majority.....

Visualizing and dirt diving are really the same thing.. Dirt diving is just putting a little more effort in preperation that beginners could really use .. It is not really going to help people that already can perform high speed landings because they have learned how to visualize landings.. but for people just learning how much imput they need and to know where to start their imput to risers and using objects on the ground to find exactly what line that they need to find can really help beginners to begin to actually start to Visualize their landings... I dont dirt dive them any more because it is so ingrained in me now but it did help to go through all actions (physically) when learning how to fly quick canopies and high speed landings.. I dont think you can be too organized with your actions..

Man i think that you are wrong for saying that it is due to luck that other people arent hurt with elipticals.. Education and interaction with higher skilled pilots is the Key!! Did you not prepare for the time when you would be in a compromising situation before you were in it? Learnig how traffic works to set up away from obstacles.. I have seen guys under spuares hit buildings because of so many other factors than what canopy they were flying.. I started on them about the same time you did but I spent countless times on the ground dirt diving my landings and then do hop and pops to have clear traffic to perform them.. Education works.. Please dont say it is luck because it is not...

There are some manufactures of L-brackets that have a line of swivel brackets.. YOu just loosen a screw and change it on the fly, easy!!.. I know that the guys who make the Velocity helmets in California make a really good L-bracket for about any helmet and it swivels with I think like 60 degrees of motion.. I just cant remember the name of the company though.... Look through the gear section and I know you can find them..
