He went on a few flights while dropping, took a crap load of pictures, and asked a huge amount of questions of the owner that was flying (though to this day I don't think he should have been flying it. is that all? I load mastered the CARVAIR at the WFFC. 2 passes of 55-60 jumpers each. And as far as I know, the only ones that landed off were the individual jumpers in the last groups, that tracked hard, THE WRONG WAY. Maybe they should have had you on hand for all the special plane loads. In '06 they were putting jumpers out on the other side of I-57 with the DC-9. I know cause I was one of 'em. What Spence really needs is an AN-2. It really sucked that I couldn't make it there in '06. I would have happily called the exit on the '9! One particular Carvair jump I remember really well. 1 person landed off, but just barely. On the outside of the fence at the end of the runway. I know this really well, because that jumper was ME! 1st pass was fine. Circled around, second pass went off without a glitch. Walked up front to check in with the other LM (Captn Happy) that was relaying my messages to the cabin. Walked back to the door, and out I went. That just means they didn't violate a statute; it doesn't mean they weren't negligent. They were: it is anticipatable that ice on a truck will, if not cleared off, break off during travel and cause damage and/or injury to others. I'm sure states may have differing laws, and I have no idea if it could be covered under a federal law, but... I drive semi's for a living, and we just got another handout stating that we can be fined for not properly clearing the ice/snow off our trailers before leaving the yard. Just HOW am I supposed to do that? it's 13'6" up there, and the roof are not designed to support the weight of a man walking on them. It's a psi thing. Snow and ice load is spread out, while my weight would be concentrated on a very small area. Anyway, that's Wisconsin. After hanging with Don, on and off the DZ, I'll have to add my inflation adjusted 2 cents here. The WFFC is Don's vacation from the "real world." He just happens to invite as many others along as would like to come, and share a bit of the expense. If you think the stress of what could, or does, happen at the WFFC would deter him, you are quite wrong. Would you lose a taste for your vacation time? I think not. Whatever reasons Don had for pulling the plug for a couple of years, they were his reasons, and his alone. I consider Don a friend. And as such, will stand beside him, whatever he decides to do in the future. Persnally, I would LOVE to go back to Rantoul, at least one more time, if only to bid the convention the farewell it truely deserves. So, in my honest and humble opinion, there needs to be at least one more WFFC. And I'm quite certain there will be. Eventually. It's your life, live it!
