  1. Pix. Although not by much. Checkpoint comes at a higher TCO and support, in Oz anyway, is less effective than Cisco. In my view they're the top two options. You can work down the scale a bit and only reduce managability rather than effectivness. An old Sun box with ipfilter and the appropriate patches could serve well although depending on the number of interfaces required going "too" old could be "interesting"..

    China BASE.

There's more photos in yesterdays (Mon 6/10) Melbourne Age. Have a squint at http://www.theage.com.au/photogallery/2003/10/06/1065292513739.html Ooroo Mark F...
  3. It's probably doubtfull for a while yet. Remember not so long ago some turkey jumped the bridge in broad daylight with a lot of people watching. AND he / they didn't call the Vicroads control centre first. The cops and ambos got called and raced to the scene fully expecting to drag a suicide out of the drink. Instead they spent quite some time trying to entice the totally unhurt jumper of the river. Mentions of "arrest" and "penalty" probably didn't help all that much..
  4. This is bloody unusual. Normally The Age is somewhat down on BASE jumpers. They clog up the Westgate bridge and tie up police resources when the jumpers don't give the control centre a call to let 'em know that it's "only" BASE jumpers and not suicides (a LOT from the bridge - around 2 or 3 a week). Anyway there are some nice photos here. Ooroo Mark F...

  7. Around 90 cents Oz / litre but by Thursday night it'll be 99.9 cpl and by next Tues it'll be around 88 or 89 or so. Since I sold the Range Rover and got a Prius I don't seem to worry about fuel prices anywhere near as much.

    Red and White Wine

Poor us in Oz - totally spoilt with choice. I reckon the best whites are the Clare Valley Rieslings from South Oz. The best Muscat has to be just about any Mick Morris brew from Rutherglen in Victoria. Port ? Chateu Tahbilk in central Vic or Brown Brothers also in Vic. Reds, where to start. Chateu Tahbilk has some shiraz they planted in 1862 that somehow managed to escape the root-rot (phylo-something I think) and the wine produced from them is brilliant but it needs to be at least 15 years old - 20 is better if you can keep your hands off it for that long. I couldn't. Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz is a damn good drop too...
  10. I just found a little newspaper called The St. Kilda Bugle St. Kilda is a suburb close to the city on the beach where everyone is involved in either the arts - mostly film, drugs or prostitution. Have a look at the Bugle and have a laugh - the "ticker tape" across the bottom is fucking hilarious. Some of it is Melbourne centric but a lot isn't. Enjoy...:-) Ooroo Mark F...

    Healthy beers

I'm ashamed to say that I live in the city from where the swill of the south (Fosters) originated. I doubt Fosters is made in a brewery - more likely a laboratory. The stuff is feral and if the UN doesn't have sanctions prohibiting such chemical agents it sure should have. Coopers on the other hand has a range of beers that are well worth sampling. They've even got sone decent recipes on their site, those for Coopers Dark Ale are especially delish...

    power outages

Solar and wind is good but I reckon that politico-thermal would be best. If we could somehow harness the hot air emanating from Washington, Canberra, London, etc. there'd never be any shortage of energy...
  13. Wot's all this silence stuff then ? Am I supposed to be keeping silent as well ? Does typing and posting the result here constitute breaking the silence ? If silence happens and there was no video was there really silence ? How can I know that the silence was really silent ? If a tree in the forest didn't fall did it really make no noise ? Did Simon tell me to be silent ? ( I only do what Simon says) Shiraz is silent - I need more shiraz - nice shiraz...

  20. There's a few schools here in Melbourne that've banned Harry Potter. Without exception they are church run schools of one description or another catering to the well heeled. Again, without exception they teach their own brand of fundamentalist religion. You know, the same stuff that fuels the middle east. One of the schools, to my certain knowledge, is completely hypocritical - on the shelves of their library they have the Magician series by Feist along with many more dealing with "magic" and the forces of "good" and "evil", etc. At the end of the day all they really scored for their stance was a right, royal spray from most radio talk-back callers and commentators. The _printed_ version of the newspapers carried a _LOT_ of letters seriously dumping on the schools for their stance. I reckon they'll be a bit more carefull with making their policies public in the future...
