You could tape the bottoms up while tucked. That'll leave you with less exposed. I'd say just suck it up and start using the booties. You'll want to have them eventually. You definitely want to get used gear for your first couple of hundred jumps. By then you'll know enough to have an idea what size and type of container and canopy you want for the next 4-5 years. Then it makes sense to go new. Don't start new. You'll grow out of it too quickly. Conversely, if you try to go too small, too soon, you'll be even more disappointed while your ankles/legs/etc heal. ... There's some hard core practice people posting here. We're more casual (not my choice). video - we pay his slot no packers - we pack our own jumps - We're looking at 10 per weekend every weekend weather permits - average 25/month Tunnel time later. The point is not making as many jumps as possible, but coming to an agreement/commitment on what everyone wants - and sticking to that agreement. Even a couple organized jumps a weekend is better than pick up dives. It just takes longer. You probably already know about the articles posted on this site. Lots of advice above. Careful. You said "lots" of blood. That more than spot cleaning. Any spot big enough to make you want to clean it, does not fall into the catagory of "spot clean". I've never heard of a "license" for packing. Maybe in your area... There are a lot of professional packers that aren't jumpers. I don't understand it (the not being a jumper part). However, it's good money and a low cost-of-living lifestyle. And you get to be around skydiving/skydivers. It'll make you a better canopy pilot once you start lessons. ... If you're breaking at 5.5, I hope it's because you want to do CrW. That's more freefall time. Seriously, we break at 4.5 for Freeflying and 3.5 for RW. Higher for new jumpers, usually 4. If they are new enough to have to break early for RW, they shouldn't even be thinking of starting FF yet. I probably should give a nod to high breakoffs for big ways......... ... Pushing 2000 jumps right now. My first two full logbooks (about 600 jumps) were the journal with everything stamped and comments for memories - It's fun to go back and read those. I'm on my 5th logbook right now and where I used to log a single jump, now holds as many as ten. I still log, but most is 4-way and I use a short hand. (e.g., "B 1 A 18 - 15 points" means 15 points on StairStep Diamond, Snowflake-Offset, Unipod, etc.) One line. Freeflying is just "FF". I only use detail when coaching. And summary stats noted down at the end of the weekend. I have a good friend just hit 11,000 - he still logs. ... Both Muff and SS have the same sad story that's more and more popular. New divers can't jump with the oldtimers and learn. Thus they are driven to Freeflying since the perception is it has less stress and more acceptable to do solo. (I like freeflying, just think that it shouldn't start until someone is proficient in belly flying - definition of 'proficient' is the next discussion here I'd suppose.) I always make it a point to take a couple dives each weekend to put a new jumper in with 3 'better' jumpers. It's a lot of fun if not very fast. And the 'newbie' never, ever, pays for someone elses slot. That stinks. We didn't learn that way and I won't operate like that unless asked to spend significant coaching time with a single person doing very basic 2-ways. It also keeps the crowd of jumpers fresh because someday we might need another teammate..... Todays newbie might be the point man you need two years from now. You said it exactly. The last 2 jumpers I trained are now moved. We used to do a downplane almost every load when I started jumping. With the newer canopies, impromptu CrW hardly ever happens anymore. I have to use my 'CrW rig' for CrW now, since my regular canopy is way too hot for it. In my DZ, there is no 'slapping it together' after a jump. It's always planned out as a CrW dive from the outset. Too much caution. WAY TO GO LAUREL! Every single skydiving discipline is a blast. Booties, tunnel time, form a team and practice, coaching, a little video. That's the best recipe for getting good (good = fast). I did 3 hours at an NSL 4-way camp in November. My energy level just kept going up the entire weekend. It's all about relaxing and enjoying it. Already had it in the '80's. I have a friend working to finish quick. needs another 20 or so and it is impacting him. I'd rather see another catagory than just changing the requirements. Maybe also a catagory for all around skydiver. Has to be proficient to some level in all the disciplines (RW, FF, CrW, landing/swooping). Maybe that will keep the FFers from burning the RW suit and the RWs from missing out on FF. It's not a weekend for me without some fast 4-way AND some headdown. Little CrW lately at my DZ.
