There is a guy at Ampuria called Rolf (good friend of Colin the rigger) who does helmet mods for camera gear. He does a great job on a Gath helmet which you can buy for about £60. You could talk to him and get someone to take your helmet out during the xmas boogie (if you're not going yourself of course).

There is a big difference between a Diablo and a Xaos. Guys who fix a heading on the horizon are subconsciously making slight adjustments which control the canopy through opening. The secret to doing this is to relax through the opening process so that there isn't a sudden jerky input - just smooth little corrections. FWIW, I found twists were usually caused by being asymetrical on the pull (hand above head and other one pulling) and being lazy about getting shoulders level again. I now get my hands level with my temples ready to tap the risers outwards (to straighted up the canopy if it starts to turn off heading) which also levels up my shoulders etc. at the same time.

Use longer risers! Also flare down and outwards so that the lines are kinked at the rings.

007 - DIE ANOTHER DAY - Switchblade - Press Clips
bobsoutar replied to quade's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Pretty sure that the stunt was real and done with Alan Hewitt standing in for Piers Brosnan and Ian Marshall standing in (at the last moment) for Halle Berry. Switchblades were rigged up with AADs. -
You can get used old style Time Out audibles cheaply if you just want something as an altitude warning device. They are loud and you can set the upper beep at 500ft intervals. I use one as a backup to my Protrack (which I would definately recommend when you can afford it).
-
The representative is called Juan and he is based at Ampuriabrava.
-
Exactly! So why not offer the H-mod as well?

170mph on belly? what the? (Pro-Track question)
bobsoutar replied to Sinkster's topic in Gear and Rigging
Ask someone else with a Protrack to take yours up with them so that you can compare the two. -
Just rest it. Lactic acid is what makes your muscles go stiff and it takes about 3-4 days to wear off.
-
One thing at a time. You need your hands to control the canopy.
-
You don't need it super tight for hop and pops. I would lengthen it slightly or fit a new slightly longer one. Get an experienced packer to check it for you before you jump it if you're not sure.
-
I think that cables are only used on a pullout deployment system. Presumably you could use a longer straight pin though.
-
My sit improved drastically when I got a suit. Keeps everything inside and away from handles too. A 2-piece would probably be even better but the manufacturer didn't do them at the time I ordered.
-
Seems a shame that Atair don't offer it as an option when buying a new one.
-
Even with my regular 2-way CReW buddy we don't warp below 1,500 feet - normal break off with a newbie is 2,500 feet. Playing around in burbles can be pretty weird - don't do it low.
-
There is a French canopy called a Springo 140 which would probably be a good choice. It's worth test jumping a few before you decide though.
-
Glad you're both ok! Sounds like you did the right thing at the time although since you had released your brakes you may have been better using them instead of risers to steer away, but then you were there and I wasn't. There was a thread about this a couple of weeks ago with some useful info in it.

Evil things to say to first time tandems on the way to altitude...
bobsoutar replied to Cepheus's topic in Tandem Skydiving
Been trying to get tandem students to wave their arms around and shout "Yippee, I'm going to skydive" and they move towards the door. None of them have done it yet but I'm sure it will freak the JM out if one ever does. -
I'm sure you're right but I still turn mine off just in case.
-
A Spectre 150 may be a good choice eventually but definately not just yet. Rent canopies until you're down to something around the 190/200 size and then get really competent on that before downsizing any further.
-
If your d-bag is much too big you may get some hard openings. You also want your closure loop pretty tight (particularly if you are freeflying) to avoid a horseshoe type malfunction - get a rigger or experienced packer to look it over for you.
-
Just my opinion but having jumped both I would say that with equal wing loadings the Stilletto will outswoop the Safire and be faster in the turns. This assumes the same person under each canopy. More experienced swoopers like yourself will often outperform lesser experienced pilots under a potentially faster canopy.

Fixing on a heading is one of the main keys. Your shoulders will tend to follow your head, creating a sort of propeller effect for turning. If you feel yourself turning away, look at, focus on, and get your shoulders facing the heading you want to maintain. Your legs will naturally follow a fraction behind and settle into position.
