A quick question for you... I had a reserve repack on 11/6/02 (i.e. in November). I'm a brit who has moved to the US and I'm a little bit confused by the whole 90/180/whatever reserve repack cycle over here. When do I next need a reserve repack? Thanks in advance, - AJS

What "high performance model" are you talking about? Not the competition cobalt I assume, do you mean the cobalt + H mod?
-
Tom, I thought I remember reading something from you in which you talked about how your opinion of the Troll was not favourable... Perhaps it was on BLiNC? Am I getting confused or have you changed your mind? - Andrew

What does everyone use for DV capture and editing?
andrewstewart replied to konradptr's topic in Photography and Video
Firewire, Apple G4 tower with a gig of RAM, and Final Cut Pro 3. No complaints :-) -
To what extent would using a vented PC (of the correct size) contribute to on-heading openings on a skydive? - when deployed @ terminal with a standard skydiving sail slider. Thanks in advance, - Andrew

I believe it depends on whether you are freefalling it, static line, Mc Conkey (!) etc...

Exactly right. I packed my Spectre 170 into my J1 for over 200 jumps. - Andrew

I believe there are two sizes of J1 Odyssey - a J1KS (S for 'small') and a J1KL (L for 'large'). I have a J1KS which is made to take a 150. I've packed both a Sabre2 135 and a Cobalt 135 into it with no problems. You'll need to shorten your closing loop as appropriate. - Andrew

Just got my panties....... holy shamoly....
andrewstewart replied to basehoundsam's topic in Wing Suit Flying
My understanding is that the BASE version has two sets of vents to aid faster inflation in sub-terminal air. Also the positioning of vents is different: the freefly ones have vents on both sides for back tracking as well as belly tracking. - Andrew -
Helicopter and balloon jumping questions from newbie
andrewstewart replied to motion's topic in Gear and Rigging
Yes, that is my understanding. I know a commercial balloon pilot who says that depending on the number of people exiting the balloon it will warp and ossillate until it 'settles down' (he was the balloon pilot for the world record balloon jump reported on this site). I'd be surprised if that didn't have a detrimental effect over time... - Andrew -
Mick, In the situation where you are jumping over water - and the possibility exists where you could land in the water under canopy - could it not in fact be more dangerous to wear body armor that could inhibit your ability to swim? I'm thinking of BASE fatality #4, #12, and #53 (http://juliabell.home.att.net/), although I don't know in any of these cases if they were wearing something that was a contributing factor. Respectfully, Andrew Stewart Atlanta GA

Not convinced. Each to their own, in any case :-)

Phree... I never thought I'd disagre with anything you wrote! I just don't see how a protec can be considered to offer more protection than a composite helmet. I suppose you could say that the thickness of foam 'decelerates' your head when it hit an object... I'm just not convinced though. I believe there was a thread on BLiNC that discussed experiences with different helmets for BASE, and the relatively thin plastic shell of the protec got literally ripped open upon hitting an object *much* easier in comparison to composite helmets such as the Bonehead. And not to be pedantic but, by definition (well... mine at least) a full face helmet will offer more protection than an open face, so a protec can't possibly offer more protection than 'most' helmets. - Andrew

Which 'Poynter's parachute manual' @ Amazon ?
andrewstewart replied to andrewstewart's topic in Gear and Rigging
Hi, I thought that I had read in the past that there were two volumes of Poynter's parachute manual, one for rounds and one for squares (canopies that is ;-) Can anyone clarify that this is volume one or two (or both combined): http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0915516357/ The 'editorial review' seems to imply it is volume 1 but I'd like to be sure. Can anyone recommend any additional reading material I should look at in this area - I want to start the journey towards getting my riggers ticket. Many thanks in advance, - Andrew -
Canopy downsize progression
andrewstewart replied to andrewstewart's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Ah! Yes, I should have searched the archives. Thanks ;-) - Andrew -
Thanks for your thoughts. - Andrew

Yes, I agree that for most malfunctions you would realize long before stowing your slider that you were going to have to cut away. I was thinking more about a canopy collision that tore your main at say... 1200 foot AGL. Could the slider (which you have stowed behind your head) be a snag hazard on your helmet/camera/whatever ? - Andrew

Canopy downsize progression
andrewstewart replied to andrewstewart's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I'm interested to hear peoples canopy downsize progression - i.e. the number of jumps on each type and size of canopy, chronologically. Can we please try not to flame anyone for "downsizing too quickly"? Looking forward to your reading your canopy history, - Andrew -
Could this possibly cause any complication if you subsequently had to cuttaway? Regards, - Andrew Stewart
-
I am interested in this also. The smallest canopy that I have known a skysurfer jump to jump is a 135 (a Spectre), although I'm sure that some people go smaller. I would be interested in hearing what canopies people have jumped when skysurfing. Regards, - Andrew Stewart

Well seeing as literal interpretation seems to be the theme of the evening, that means you have jumped a Sabre2, Crossfire2, Safire, Stilleto, Lighting, Tri', VX, Hornet, Lotus, and BASE canopies. Not bad for someone who's profile says they have 300 odd jumps. Bleh! I'm going to bed. - Andrew
-
So in fact we agree! Any canopy that is not "square" is elliptical. Terms such as "semi-elliptical" and "tapered" are simply marketing speak. - Andrew
-
You seem to exist in a world in which every word that is written on a web site is taken as a literal truth. Listen to what PhreeZone and the others are telling you! - Andrew

*sigh* I don't think I need to say anything more. Other people reading the thread can make up their own minds. By the way, the person who said the quote on my original post was Dan from Atair. Don't you jump a Cobalt Richard? - Andrew
