I am an outsider looking in. I know that every country has its politics and different points of view but I really have never seen the level of vitriolic spleen vented anywhere else than by Americans. At Bush's re-election there were Democrats threatening to leave the country. With Obama being elected there were Republicans threatening the same. To some people anyone with a different politcal view is a 'damned Liberal' or a 'Right wing NeoCon'. It is incredible the bipolarity of the country when looked at from the outside. As an example look at all the posts about how bad Obama is at the moment. Rewind 3 years and there was the same about Bush. Added to this more Americans are killed by other Americans every year than in all of the 'wars' that you are all involved in around the world. To me, looking in, it seems like you don't need any enemies around the world as you have more than enough in your own back yards. Don't get me wrong, I am sure the UK is like this to an outsider but I really don't see the same level of absolute outrage in the political system as you guys have. To what stage does this take you? My sister in law is 34 and has just reached consultant level and the end of exams after starting uni at 18 years old. I have read through this entire thread and don't seem to able to find someone who has responded to these comments with a 'What the Fuck?!'. Is this the standard US arrognace that everything that is done there is better than in the UK/anywhere else or is it based on some extensive piece of research? The mindset for someone going into banking and someone going into medicine is entirely different. Do you think that people sit there and think - "What should I do with my failed high school exams - flip burgers or become a doctor?". Medicine is a very tough course. You need top grades from school to get in . You need to work incredibly hard for 5 years in Uni plus 2 years in hospital and you keep working hard all your life. Yet Medical schools are still over subscribed because it is considered a highly respected profession in the UK. I don't know of a single person who has weighed up the two different options as their two potential career paths. Medicine is still considered only for the best. Please avoid making unfounded blanket statements about other countries in an attempt to make your own seem better and stick to the constant in-fighting within your own. It's what Americans do best. I went there in February this year and it is a profoundly moving place. There are trenches still preserved in one spot and due to the tradition of burying their dead near where they fell there are literally dozens of little cemetaries all over the place. It is worth when looking at the pictures of Ypres as it is now remembering that not a single wall of a building was left intact after the War. It was literally and physically flattened. The Belgians rebuilt it almost exactly as it was and the old Cloth Hall (in the centre of the town) now holds a beautiful and detailed museum. As you enter the museum you are given the name of a person to follow through to find out what happened. In our group of 14 people I had the only one who survived. I will dig out some of my pictures and put them up if there is any interest. Also worth noting that as a tribute to those who saved them the Belgians still play the last post every single day at the Menin Gate. It is one of the most moving things I have ever seen. Agreed, both. Did a jump on Saturday with some Swiss guys who were jumping metres. We agreed breakoff at 5k feet and did a check in the plane as we passed through to make sure they were happy with the altitude because for some reason on the ground they both read 0... A friend of mine has left me his rig whilst he goes to Afghanistan for 7 months. He pointed out that the last time the reserve was repacked you could see bits of the pilot chute underneath the flaps of the rig. Have a look at the attached. The first is the rig with everything tucked in, the second is a glimpse of the pilot chute and the third is easily achieved by tugging gently on the pilot chute. I was recently jumping at a large DZ that had a 400 jump limit on for the high winds. There was a guy with 30 jumps jumping which I thoroughly disagreed with but only because he was part of our group and I didn't want shit if he hurt himself. The one and only time I put it into a bag to carry on (out of dozens of trips) I had to weigh the hand luggage and was told to check it for being over weight - budget airline trying to get more cash. I have never had a problem. I have never had to tell people how awesome I am. No-one has ever spilt anything on it, nor has he reserve been pulled.
