Anyone using air to air radios/Bluetooth setups?
yvanpec replied to tobyiscool1982's topic in Gear and Rigging
I usually have cell signal up until jump altitude. could just phone your homie and use a hands free kit with the mic in the helmet and the phone in the jumpsuit pocket ? I mean.....unlimited minutes right ? Better be on the ground wishing you were up there than being up there wishing you were on the ground. -
my 188 zpx fits perfect in an I4 so that's about 2 sizes smaller. side note: it took around 50-60 jumps on it to fit this well. you'll hate your life prior to that jump count. Better be on the ground wishing you were up there than being up there wishing you were on the ground.

Dynamics of canopy opening vs packing techniques
yvanpec replied to grue's topic in Gear and Rigging
you ARE accelerating. When you get from belly to feet down and the canopy has not inflated completely yet, you actually gain vertical speed for a split moment. Better be on the ground wishing you were up there than being up there wishing you were on the ground. -

my pilot 188 zpx fits snug into a container designed to receive a pack volume of 368 min 393 max the pilot ZP pack volume is 440. so that's right in the 10 percent smaller than regular ZP. Mind you, it has only about 15 jumps on it and I am not the best packer. I expect to gain a couple cu inches of space over the next dozen jumps. hope that helps. Flying with your rig as a "tote"
yvanpec replied to bbrodes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
just got back from a trip. my rig with a cypres 2 had no issue going through security, my friend's rig packed with a Vigil got stopped both ways in the x ray machines. they explained my cypres was clearly visible but the vigil didnt show parts and what not that well. They almost didnt allow it to fly with us on the way back from Spain. Better be on the ground wishing you were up there than being up there wishing you were on the ground. -
Mirage G4 M3 with Optimum 176 & Firebolt 182?
yvanpec replied to guilhermevh's topic in Gear and Rigging
is it a rule of thumb or is it a personal remark ? arent size charts supposed to guide people not to use a "if you can close it it will come out " kind of thinking ? i mean, put a 1 foot closing loop and you can close pretty much anything, right ? How would you spend 13,5K on skydiving?
yvanpec replied to Squeeezer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Easy to say when you live in Switzerland! I spend more money on BASE than sky jumps via airfare and lodging. I have been on the other side......I m big into surfing and suffered from being landlocked for years. Now i can finally be a smartass about BASE jumping. dont take it away from me please ! yvanpec replied to Squeeezer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
do 200 jumps, start base jumping and dont spend a dime on another load again. -
Did 3 tandems, including 2 back to back with less than a minute on the ground before getting on the next load.......it was....interesting to say the least Then AFF, where I was more comfortable being responsible for myself then letting someone else be responsible for me.... Questions on learning to pack for the first time
yvanpec replied to slizzap's topic in Gear and Rigging
I did exactly what you did. Got my A last month and got my rig right away. I packed it maybe 25 times before I got to jump it. failed the first 4 times, managed to put it in the bag 3 times after that but I wouldn't have jumped it, and then I got better at it and I can now pack it safely in just under 20 minutes. It's a brand new canopy and it will suck. Yes, it will suck even more after your first jump because even if you shake it when you practice, you won't be able to shove that much air in the cells as it does when you fly it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGyvLfdTH1k this is how I pack when I jump (with a few twists), but I am also practicing pro packing on my down time. I just find I have better control on my canopy and it's easier to get it into the bag with psycho packing. 18 jumps so far and only 1 issue which was a line twist, but i rushed to get on a load and didnt stow my lines properly.....stupid. some people will tell you to pro pack before you learn how to psycho pack.....to each his own. Since we have almost the same level of experience, my advice is to pay extra attention to "push fabric out in between As and Bs and Bs and Cs.....blabla" as the canopy will have a nice symmetrical fold and it will arrange the volume of the canopy better. My .2 cent as a newbie -
how did those jumps span over the years ? 150 in 5 so lets say 30 a year ever year. did you do 10 in a week end for 3 random week ends ? did you do 1 jump a week every two week for a year ? If you do 10 in a week end every now and then, there is a good chance that people wont even remember who you are. maybe try to spread your jumps more regularly ? just trying to figure i out here. I wish i had received better CC advices during my AFF. i was on my own (even though I had the radio) to land on my second jump. I was expecting to hear "flare" but it never happened.......felt kinda lost for a second. I never had any issues but I also never got the confidence to really experience much with my canopy. I booked a 1 on 1 course for the next week end, and will probably work on accuracy as I jump on DZs that have tons of hazards. And yup, i wish I would have paid 200 or 300 more for my AFF and got all that done at the same time. I watched the WindGames today. It felt like watching rollerblading, ice skating, or any other gay shit you can find. Why, in the name of god, would you invest time and money in such a discipline ??? Now I can tell you why they don't speak to you: they're too busy sucking at life. AND, they probably think they're the shit. Skydive Lillo Cool, I'll go with the CC course as it is what seems like the best combination of useful & fun to me ! Thx all Better be on the ground wishing you were up there than being up there wishing you were on the ground.

hi all, I have about 35 jumps and I will be going to a DZ in Spain next week for an extended week end, hoping to knock maybe 15-20 jumps. The DZ offers tons of courses, from FF to CC, accuracy jumps, swooping..... I am very interested in taking a CC & accuracy course as well as a FF course. Is it too early ? Should I sharpen my skills on my own before I attend such classes ? Better be on the ground wishing you were up there than being up there wishing you were on the ground.

If going head down is scary to her maybe you can teach her to sit fly ? I dont have much experience but I did a two way last week with a guy weighing the same as I do and we separated and he started sit flying and he went down pretty fast. I have about 30 jumps and I would feel more comfortable trying to sit fly than trying to go head down to keep up. How big of a volume difference in regards to packing skills ?
yvanpec replied to yvanpec's topic in Gear and Rigging
I'll post a couple picture tomorrow maybe it will help to see if it's right or wrong. It was an impossible fit on the first 3 attempts. It was then a tight fit on attempts 4 to 8 and I would NOT have jumped it. Then with more patience and some help from a fellow jumper who has more experience packing, I was able to fit it in the bag very nicely without having to force it in there. (to the point where I started to wonder if some magic happened overnight......) Every flap covers every inch of fabric, the lines are nice and tucked in there. Now, the closing loop is probably too long but I can't find any info from Aerodyne on recommended lengths and grommet alignments. fact is, I still wouldn't jump it but it's still nice to have a rig to practice packing at home. I got to really understand the design of the canopy (during AFF, As Bs Cs and Ds didn't really mean anything to me....) and it also gives me plenty of time to work and understand bulk distribution. I get to practice on a very hard rig to pack, and when I go jump the rental on sunday, maybe it will be a breeze to pack it up Better be on the ground wishing you were up there than being up there wishing you were on the ground. -

by the way, when is a container considered overfilled ? Solely based on cubic inches stuffed in there ? Better be on the ground wishing you were up there than being up there wishing you were on the ground. -
AFF training options during Winter months
yvanpec replied to jigneshsoni's topic in Safety and Training
Same as you, I live in a cold snowy country. I went to Florida to pass my AFF and A license. I got there on a thursday and was done with AFF on saturday at noon. So a bit less than 3 days. 4 days later I had my A license. Of course this can vary if you fail jumps or if the weather acts up. I was able to do 25 jumps in 6 days, and only 1 during the last remaining 3 days due to high winds. I chose to do that because I knew of a DZ here at home that opens this week end, so that's about 20 days in between my last and next jump, which is acceptable, but more would have started to bug my confidence a little. More than 6 weeks and I would probably have an instructor with me for a refresher, although not needed with my A license. Also, I felt extremely comfortable at the DZ in Florida. I knew who could answer questions, load timings, started picking up habits after almost 2 weeks there. Now, I m gonna change plane, landing pattern, landing hazards, staff, gear........I am kind of freaked out. If NJ is your home and will be for a while, I say wait for spring and get your AFF there. You won't be stressed out about jump numbers and fast progression. Better be on the ground wishing you were up there than being up there wishing you were on the ground. -

How big of a volume difference in regards to packing skills ?
yvanpec replied to yvanpec's topic in Gear and Rigging
Nobody ever agrees on this topic. Some guy working for Aerodyne that was demoing them said it does pack 2 sizes smaller. Than again when you actually email Aerodyne they say 1 size smaller. Then you see someone pack a 188zpx in a 150 container..... Maybe there is no definite answer ? Better be on the ground wishing you were up there than being up there wishing you were on the ground. -
Choosing the right drop Zone
yvanpec replied to Ramzisleiman's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I had 20 min of tunnel time prior to my AFF. My instructor said it didn't show at all up until my 5th or 6th jump, during which he could finally tell. The stress of having to do everything right (hotel check, door position etc etc.....) and deal with 2 instructors made me forget everything I had learned in the tunnel. Glad it came back tho ! All good advice. The attachment was written over 40 yrs ago; and is still good advice. Jerry Baumchen I was scared of beating up the D bag.....I am not anymore ! Better be on the ground wishing you were up there than being up there wishing you were on the ground.
