Two New Basic Safety Requirements Involve Tandem Skydiving At the recent USPA Board meeting March 27-29 in Daytona Beach, Florida, the Safety and Training Committee discussed several issues related to tandem skydiving safety and brought two motions to the full board for a vote. Both motions passed, creating two new Basic Safety Requirements, which are effective immediately: • Any person making a tandem jump acting as pilot in command is required to conduct system handles checks immediately after deployment of the drogue. • Any person making a tandem jump is not permitted to make turns greater than 90 degrees below 500 feet above the ground. The handle check applies to all of the operation handles of any tandem system, including the reserve ripcord handle, regardless of whether or not the instructor is wearing a handcam. Another tandem-related change from the board meeting involves the Tandem Instructor Rating Course. The Category D solo evaluation jump will be eliminated from the course. This change takes effect with the next revision of the Instructional Rating Manual, due for release in the fall. A full report on the board meeting will be included in the June issue of Parachutist. So I have to ask - isn't sending the report out to them for comment a bit of a conflict of interest? Don't get me wrong, I love the idea. I'm just not 100% convinced on your methodology. The NASA Engineers are convinced, you could take it up with them. We had at least ten with us doing the testing. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.

The test procedure required dropping the sample from a measurable height sufficient to get an accurate descent time. We used the 475 foot height of the overhead crane for this purpose. The height was divided by the descent time to obtain the Feet per Second Rate of Descent. The ROD in FPS was then squared and multiplied by half the density of air at the test altitude (.002378 Slugs per cubic foot at sea level/2). This equation produced the resistive or “Dynamic Pressure” in Pounds per Square foot experienced during the test. The Dynamic Pressure was then divided into the all up weight of the sample yielding the “Effective Square Footage” of the sample. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.

On Saturday March 21st 2015 a team of NASA Engineers from the Crew Section and representatives from central Florida area parachute manufactures (Strong, UPT, Parachute Labs and Mirage Systems) along with a plethora of videographers from the local skydiving community, assembled in the NASA Vehicle Assembly Building to test reserve pilot chutes. This was done as a lab project for a parachute engineering and physics class conducted by NASA’s Rocket University and presented by Parachute Labs. Inc. Drop 4 was the Race. All 14 pilot chutes were released simultaneously from the crane catwalk with a profusion of color and dynamics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly5fTv_ZMYA I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.

Windy, Bill Booth did not invent the Sky Hook. Mark Hewitt did while he was working at the Relative Workshop a very long time ago. I don’t know the particulars of patent rights. I was told by someone who knows a guy that heard it at the DeLand Airport Bar in the men’s room that Bill Booth paid Mark Hewitt for the rights to that RSL. I don’t use an RSL, I jump two Racers with Cypres AAD’s. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.

First time at Deland... and I'm a little nervous
3331 replied to ShannonElise's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
DeLand is the Center of Skydiving on Planet Earth. The Industry is here along with World Class coaching and training. The DZ has a history of Sport Parachuting going back to the very early 1960’s. DeLand is a fun town with lots of entertainment. Some of the local motels and hotels near the DZ offer special Skydiver Rates. At the Perfect Spot bar and Restaurant you can listing to some Drunken Ass Jump Stories that Andrea (Skymama) just loves to hear again and again. Parachute Labs Inc. is on the Airport, they make “The Racer” and “Firebolt Main”. You should visit them. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving. -
