  4. Pretty scary that 1 in 4 peps needed a hospital visit at some point!
  5. Frodo, Man that vid is some scary shit.
  6. the pressure I get seems more to come from the time it involves rather than the associated risks. Up until my family and I lost 2 acquiantances within a few weeks. I felt the pressure then. Short and persistant but they know I aint stopping.
  7. I have another question... it is common to look forward to your first cut-away? I have to say when I think about I get that tingly excited feeling. Must be a massive rush. Don't get me wrong I'm not chasing it or anything...but when it comes I will be fairly chuffed (assuming everything turns out ok of course!). Am I a weirdo or what??? Am I alone in this??? Anyone actually enjoy having a cutaway (excluding the expense etc) or this is just "main rider" only sensation that's cured after your first cut????
  8. Way I saw it.. if I could have a new rig for £2,100 fully equipped with a Cypres then that was more or less what I would have had to spend on the second hand market. My circumstances are a little different though. Living on an island only 9 miles by 5 there isn't really a second market so I would either be spending £150 to go look at a rig that I might not like or get it new.
  9. Yes. Its wrapped around the foot but only cause it caught on the boot just after being pulled out.
  10. Hey duke. Wait till you've done your AFF and got a few solo's in and your instructors have started to downsize you. I bought my first rig at around 60/70 jumps (170 Hornet) which I think is about right (even if I say so myself!). At least by then you know that your going to stay in the sport and getting to the level where the 200 sq ft canopies are beginning to feel docile enough to invest in a canopy that will last you at least a couple of hundred jumps. I bought my canopy new from South Africa and you can get a whole brand new custom designed re colours system for around £1,500 + £600 for the Cypres. I live in Jersey so we don't pay VAT on import so it will probably work out slightly more to send to UK (unless you can go and collect it!). Good luck with the AFF Dude and ride that bike safe!
  11. having said that...with the feet where they are he's not exactly going to flying off forwards now is he!
  12. I had a camera flyer friend come with me on one load to film a 3 way. Grabs his helmet and camera and we're halfway to the plane and I turn to him and say "Don't you need a parachute?" 1st gear check. Make sure its there!
  13. It might also be worth investing in a ditter. Always like to have a back up device. Everything can fail..
  14. It seems to me pretty clear that the possition of the legs at pull are so bent that the bridle as it is pulled out of the bag catches on the bottom of the shoe resulting in a the bridle looping around the leg and subsequently being pulled tight as the pilot chute inflates. How glad am I that students have to have an AAD. What concerns me is that this student had to rely on it.
  15. I dont know what you paid but i got mine new from Manny at Icarus. You can contact him through his site www.icarus.co.za I wouldn't say its the best suit in the world but it was cheap (cost me £60 = $96) and made to measure. Definately ok as a starter suit.
  16. I do check all the lines are clear - especially the brakes. After that I don't care if it doesn't look pretty and just stuff it in.
  17. I am of the same opinion - its not about being a brilliant skydiver but it is about being supportive, encouraging and being able to see where the errors are. I would principally like to coach people that have just come off their AFF course and are looking to get into the basics of RW. This is where the demand is at our DZ as we are a new club and so we don't have a lot of members on high jump numbers but a small core of novices wanting to learn more. It also seems to me that this is the time when coaching is most important as this is when you are most likely to pick up bad habits. Without a point of reference its hard to know that your doing it. (this happened to me and it was only when I started jumping with others and had videos done that I realised my position was slightly wrong). I would have greatly appreciated some coaching at that stage and it didn't need to come from a world champion.
  18. Thanks slut. Theres some really great advice there. My plan (evolving!) was to go to a Skydive University for 3 weeks to ensure that I have sufficient air skills (and the means to prove them) before taking the Coach course.
  19. Hi. The drop zone we run in Jersey operates to USPA rules so I am going for the USPA coach rating. I have already ordered SIM and the IR Manual. Just wondered if there are any particular courses I should consider attending? Where in the States are the best coaches to be found and how available are these people? I would have to come over from the UK so the time I have to spend there would be limited unfortunately. Skydive University sounds like a good plan (to get an idea of how others coach and improve my skills). Is this a feasable objective given to rigs and 3 or 4 weeks to make it happen?
  20. Ok. I would like to learn how to coach. I know at the moment I don't have the necessary numbers but I am planning to put that right. I know I have the attitude to do it. I really want to get into spreading the joy of what we do and first stage is coaching. Any pointers? Recomondations on courses? Practical areas to work on the most. Thanks - Alun.
  21. It was. Ditched that and now I was asking about Sabre 2's. Although I have just found a new hornet kicking about..... so much choice and so little money!!!
