Where do you think YOU are going?!?!?!? "Old riggers never die, they just smell that way!" Stay close my friend. Blues, J.E. James 4:8

Ed. If in fact you do not believe dealing with the FAA is important, relative, or does not increase one's "understanding" of the "bureaucracy" why state your dealings with them? In what manner do/did you deal with the FAA? Are you a pilot, mechanic, or Flight Instructor? Why yell? "MOST PEOPLE" work should have read what "people fear most", and you are reflecting that position. The FAA "farms out" enforcement at this time and has for years through DPREs, DEs, 135/121/etc. Check Airmen, etc.. The FAA would not have to fund the USPA, we taxpayers would however, are we not funding the USPA now? If you think Chris would be making ramp checks you are either being sarcastic or foolish. How about S&TAs? I.Es? As I said, facts not opinions. Yes it is possible to undo regulations that do not work. It happens, think about Part 105, tandems, etc. Does it take some time, yes and that is a good thing so that "facts" may be evaluated for all changes and not someone's emotions. Everyone in the "bureaucracy" that I deal with, have delt with, or know have been very interested in our sport, supporting our efforts concerning demo's etc. and have been educated concerning our operations. Follow the rules and they support and provide some trust, break the rules and you get what you get. Now go back and read my post. Did I suggest we go there? No. I asked people to "think about it" which was followed by your statement that I do not "understand". So, educate or regulate. Still Blues, J.E. James 4:8

Come on. Don't start that S&TA grounding anybody thing again.............. S&TA's cannot ground anyone, only DZOs can. Don't start that "if you have a good relationship with the DZO you can Mr. S&TA". Fact is, it is the DZOs decision and his only. Learn the facts folks, please. James 4:8

Accurately gauging altitude by sight alone
sducoach replied to lawrocket's topic in Safety and Training
Okay Bill let us disagree however, are you teaching new jumpers to swoop their canopies? Are we talking about the same thing here? Also If you are in a position in the pattern or below 1000' where you cannot take one second to look at your altimeter, the problem is not with the "scan" in the landing pattern, it's with your pattern or your traffic management prior to the pattern. When I'm flying an approach in an aircraft it is a constant "scan" inside to the instruments and "outside" for traffic and position. No difference with a canopy. Blues Brother, J.E. James 4:8 -
Accurately gauging altitude by sight alone
sducoach replied to lawrocket's topic in Safety and Training
Accurate or not you must start by using your altimeter. If you start at altitude, set up for an altitude by 500', i.e. 4500, 5000, make your move, be it carving, 270, etc. Let your canopy recover to normal flight and feel the speed and recovery. Check your altimeter and see what you lost during the move. Use that as a minimum altitude on your altimeter until you have enough experience to see the approach picture. Yes there will be variables however, your approach picture will change with the conditions and you must learn the differences in the approach picture. More importantly you will see the picture for the no go when you are low. I asked one of our new "swoopers" a couple weeks ago who was starting way to low and having to go righ into brakes and killing his performance what altitude he was starting at. His answer, 75'. For a 180 toggle turn, that's even pushing a Goliath! Learn at altitude, using risers, and using the altimeter, get comfortable with the feel then bring it down in little steps. Blues, J.E. Ed, Thank you! As someone who does not understand, why don't you explain it to me, please! I've dealt with the FAA ( I believe that is what you called the "bureaucracy") sine 1971. I am sure I've been wrong for the past 33 years. What most people fear ( and I am not saying you are one) is the requirement for being responsible for their actions, required to actually earn the license & ratings, and being exposed to financial and civil actions when they choose to ignore the regulations. Even with that the "bureaucracy" allows you to violate any rule in an emergency! In other words, they have teeth to enforce the "regulations". PRM time is for everyone who cares to state their position on any changes. It is simply not simple and again, please tell me why it will not work and give specifics, not just "opinions". Blues, J.E. edited in: Ed, take a look at the poll. 80% approve of the actions taken by USPA. James 4:8

Dog Gonne It Chuck, Yes I read your post. You said there was a good argument, where? Pssst, #6 & #7 are skydiver questions, not riggers. to comply with FAR's as a skydiver. Thanks for responding Chuck, just trying to keep up the keeping up! Some people (not you) try to represent that omission is permission. Let them try arguing that one in court. Blues, J.E. James 4:8

Old dog, new tricks????? Or, are you just sounding like my wife????? Sorry Sparky, the devil made me do it................... Blues, J.E. James 4:8

Okay Chuckbrown, Defend your position. Give us the good argument concerning the base rig you mentioned. A few questions to address please. Question 1. Is base jumping skydiving? Question 2. When base started what type of rig did we use? Question 3. Are skydiving rigs legal for base? Question 4. Are base rigs legal for skydiving? Question 5. Are base rigs legal for "emergency" jumps? Question 6. Please define a "type", "TSOed", "approved" skydiving rig, non-emergency and emergency. Question 7. Who is responsible to determine the "difference"? More if wanted. Looking forward to your response. Blues, J.E. James 4:8

Anyone who deals with, stays in contact with, or knows the S&T Committee, or the S&T department of USPA knows a lot of effort is being placed on this topic. One of the problems they experience reflects the responses on the DZ.com. To many "experts" and "opinions". There may be a concern in the board relative to making some "free spirit" skydivers upset, so what? If you want to make a change, tell your RD, e-mail the NDs, e-mail the S&TA department so they have your printed position on this subject. Give them the support, the votes, the tools and they will make a change. You vote for them, support them, and let them know!!!! Blues, J.E. chase a rabbit or focus on the issue James 4:8

cutaway charges for rented gear
sducoach replied to flyuphi99's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It seems to me that students are different than experienced skydivers concerning the rental of equipment. A student expects a service provided to include required equipment for the training. An experienced skydiver is renting a convenience. I had a DZO wanting to swap rigs on a jump. I don't swap rigs on the way to the aircraft. We jump, he has a bag lock. I land with the freebag, pick up the main, find the pud and walk in. Should I have charged a "recovery fee"????? Sounds like a DZO has just found a new revenue line. Blues, J.E. James 4:8 -
Take a look at the "poll" guys. 79% say it is a good or great thing to police ourselves. How about this one. Should we have the FAA establish BSR's as FAR's and contract the USPA to police and enforce by giving them some teeth? Just a thought........... Blues, J.E. James 4:8

Tom, I think they are missing the "type" or "TSO" def. of "approved". Blues, J.E. James 4:8

Oh Mr. seal_s49, You are an immoral in my eyes. You see, I am always the last one in my area to receive mine. Sorry, I ment "immortal"................ Blues, J.E. James 4:8

No.............................. Not skydivers!!!!!!!!!!!! It was funny when I heard the story. Guy came in and the rigger had his packing card and silver handle waiting for him............ Blues, J.E. James 4:8

Chuck, I was given one last Thursday without a packing card. I had to call the last rigger to pack it that I knew of to check the date! I knew the last rigger had caught a pencil pack by the owner and pulled the card and the silver! Skydivers, got to love em!!!!!! Blues, J.E. James 4:8

Saskia, No Problem here brother! The DZ.com is starting to act like the NG with all the "whinners" looking for cheese. There are a lot of "experts" here that mis-represent their skill levels, ratings, etc. Just will not let them get this post off line like they do so many others. We have people who post as "experts" in every forum you can find with very "little" experience. The post is for new riggers that need to know. Experienced riggers should know. Hang in there Brother! Blues, J.E. James 4:8

You are going to have to get the details from USPA or bum a magazine. Blues, J.E. James 4:8

Just received the Parachutist magazine and read the actions taken by the board against nine members/rating holders. What are your opinions on the actions and how would you address the problems. Blues, J.E. James 4:8

LawnDart21, Chuck is right on here. Wake up call folks. Point in fact is the past rigger was/is a "rigger mill" student. The problem with some "rigger mills" is that in 9 days you too can "be one" without any experience other than the class. I know several who either had not seen or touched a reserve before they attended and/or, had never worked with a SR/Master rigger at all prior. Do they need to be reminded of their responsibilty? Looks like a few do to me. If somepeople get touchy about the title of this post, so be it. Might think about it next time they open a reserve. Man it this keeps up, I'm starting a fan club!!!!!
