I don't know much about statistics or odds... Is it possible to do 1000 jumps, each jump having a 1 in 10 chance of killing you, and not die? I think it should be perfectly possible. The odds of getting killed on a jump are completely separate from your odds on the next jump. Say you have a 1:2 chance of dying. You jump and don't die. On the next jump you still have the same 1:2 chance right? You're not guaranteed a fatality just beacause you survived the previous 1:2 jump... right? I'd say that if every BASE jump I did carried a 1:200 chance of killing me, I'd still jump about the same rate as I do.

Damn... If anyone has more information, can you please PM me? Fuck.

Okay, how do I get one of those?

What Ray means is that you need to use both risers to avoid hitting something. You need to accomplish three things: 1.) Slow or stop your forward movement. (Slow your closing rate with the object to give you more time to turn.) 2.) Turn the canopy so it's not on a course that intersects the object. 3.) Do not excessively consume vertical feet. Slider down, usually a couple things are true: 1.) You didn't have much altitude to begin with. 2.) You will be opening in close proximity to the wall. 3.) If you need to jump slider down, there's a chance that your primary landing area (sometimes only real option) will cease to be an option if you consume an excessive amount of altitude getting the canopy turned around. This can put you in a position that could be serious. So, I guess to summarize, you need to be familiar with how to effectively make that canopy stop, turn, and be able to do it rapidly, accurately, and efficiently. That type of efficiency does not exist when a person has five BASE jumps. That type of flying cannot be learned from an aircraft either. A balloon, yes, but not an airplane. Flying a canopy immediately following a slider down opening is a beast unique to itself and can really only be trained by BASE jumping. A catch-22 that tends to work against people with no access to a forgivable object to train on. Twin Falls is only $500-600 away from most American BASE jumpers. If you can crank out $3000 for a rig, $300 for a camera helmet, $1100 for the camera, $85 bucks for a PC, and still go out and get shit-faced a couple nights a week... you can afford to get your ass to TF and do some training jumps where you won't smack a wall unless you REALLY fuck something up.

The Official Object Strike Poll - don't post if you don't BASE, thanks.

Dude, you have waaaaaaaaay too much time on your hands. -
Well, a few of us do know a thing or two about BASE jumping. It's pretty easy to figure out what's going on when somebody posts about an incident they had. New jumper: "I went out last night and (this) happened." Experienced jumpers: "Well, tell us what the conditions were and give us an idea of your experience level." New jumper: "Well, conditions were bad and I'm totally new to this." Experienced jumpers: "Well, we would have been expecting that to happen but because you weren't with somebody who could have told you what to look out for, you had to learn firsthand." New jumper: "None of you were there. You don't know what happened." You don't think the rest of us have watched or experienced what you just described? We might not have been on that particular jump with you, but between all of the experienced jumpers here, we've seen a few BASE jumps go wrong so we might just have an idea.

Those are cellular towers. Should be just fine.

What were you doing jumping an antenna on new gear, with five BASE jumps, in a crosswind? Who were you with? Did you ever think, "hmmm.... this may be a bad idea...." Crosswind at exit usually means wind through the wires. You could turn around and jump the other side where the wind will be blowing 30 degrees off the wires. That would be better. Why would you jump into a sector with a crosswind?
-
How about I ride on your back and hold your pilot chute. Somebody at the exit point will be holding a long static line attached to my pilot chute. You can ski off the edge with me in tow and once my canopy is out, I'll PCA you. Sound good?

revolution n 1: a drastic and far-reaching change in ways of thinking and behaving Um... maybe I'm a little slow, or dense, but I'm failing to see how jumping a 60 foot cliff is going to revolutionize a sport like BASE jumping. The crew doing the amazing flights in Superterminal, in my opinion, are revolutionizing not only BASE jumping, but body flight in general. I've seen my own deployment sequence complete less than 20 feet from an impact that would have killed me. I didn't run around spraying about a revolution.

Should be a lesson learned then. Welcome to BASE.

Anybody know about the song at the end of Rage?

Which landing area at Tombstone? There are tight landing areas there, but they don't include the road or the large meadow down in the basin. Over on the big boulder is an intersting and very possible landing area. "Hole in the Woods" up here in washington is a TIGHT landing area. (That's not a site name. Google it if you don't believe me.) Edit: Tight landing area added. Yellow is the only landing area that will probably keep you out of the hospital. I've jumped it twice and I'm not sure I'd jump it again.

Every on-heading opening feels like winning the lottery. As my canopy is traveling to line-stretch, I am getting ready to turn the 180 around. If you EXPECT a 180 on every jump, you'll never be surprised when it happens. You may still hit the wall, but you'll be better prepared than the jumper who is betting in getting an on-heading and doesn't. Two different mindsets which I believe will yield two slightly different reaction times. But that's just my half-cocked hypothesis

Yes, the ACE is a non-vented BlackJack. The BlackJack is such a stable canopy is super deep brake approaches and has massive flare power. Even from half brakes, you can get an impressive flare. The canopy is very predictable in its entire control range. It's very easy to sink into tight landing areas because it is so stable even if stalling vertically and then transitioning back into flight for landing. What size canopy are you looking for?
-
Have you had a chance to jump a BlackJack yet?
-
Just flip it around and wear it on the front. You can keep your water that way. Or you can buy a platypus. Small and compact. When empty it's about the same bulk as a ziploc bag.

Respect has little to do with what outfit you belong to. Respect from other warriors comes from your actions when shit really mattered. What you do when the bullets are in the air and the blood is pouring into the sand... that's what matters. Any service member deserves the respect and thanks of every American who who lives on our soil. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a (combat) veteran who believes that actually pulling triggers is equal to shelving pallets in a warehouse. Sure, each one is vital, but they're not the same. One can be done by almost anyone, the other... But since when was an ARMY unit the epitome of manliness? -
Yeah... but who really want to talk to Peter K anyhow?
-
Both actually. I'm currently building a BASE video soundtrack to play on my long BASE roadtrips. Maybe we should just try to catalog all the BASE videos and the songs on them...?

Anybody know who sings the song at the beginning of Continuum? What is the song called?

All I know is that this is the most entertaining thread I've read here on DZ.com in a loooong time. I think this is probably a troll, as entertaining as it it, but if it's not I won't judge you. You're so absolutely screwed that maybe you just need a little advice to keep you alive for a couple more days. Personally, I am quite capable of killing any intruder with any weapon in my collection. My standard weapon, which is rarely further than an arms distance from me at any time in my home, is my HK USP 40 Compact. I like that because without sights, I can put a bullet on a 3x5 index card at any distance within my apartment. I shoot A LOT. For someone who doesn't shoot a lot, I recommend two things. 1.) (Preferable) Get a gun and get your ass to the range and put 1000 rounds through it or keep shooting until you're absolutely confident that you can put a bullet into whatever you're aiming at. If you're incompetent with a gun, run. Choosing to stand and fight with a person who is armed and knows how to effectively use a weapon will just result in you being a brave dead guy. In your case, run to another state. 2.) (least preferable) Get a weapon that will partially make up for your lack of skills. Get something that's simple to operate (pump shotgun comes to mind) and fires buckshot with an open choke. Shoulder the weapon, point it at the center of mass and squeeze the trigger. Keep shooting until the threat is eliminated or you are dead. Either way, if you choose to avoid the authorities, make yourself scarce. Good luck. edit: dyslexic fingers
