  1. I heard lately that the best way to apply input to the rear risers when swooping is to pull them apart rather than pulling down on them. The reason given was that by pulling down on them you tend to pump more air out of the canopy. Can any swoopers out there add a bit more insight into this? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  2. Thanks for the info. What is "very near futrue"? Weeks or months? I already have an RDS. It's just the line set I'm after. I have heard that they are 16" longer than the original set. I have a rigger that can fit them as well. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  3. I used to think that with my velocity, now I know better. It took two cutaways to teach me that I should leave the risers alone until the canopy has stopped snivelling. I have my hands up high ready to grab the risers if needed to avoid a collision. Otherwise, just as you said, harness input is all you need to keep the canopy from going into unrecoverable line twists. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

  7. If you cutaway from a bag locked canopy there is obviously not as much force being applied to the three ring system as when the main is at least partially inflated. That being said, the force being applied by an inflated pilot chute is normally sufficient to cause the 3-ring system to seperate. What about a collapsed pilot chute? I dunno, but it may not be enough. If you execute your emergency procedures high enough, there should be time to check that the main's risers have indeed seperated before you pull the reserve. I teach our students to cutaway, look over their shoulder to check the main is gone, then pull the reserve. This will also prevent over zealous students firing off their reserve before they have completed the cutaway. Of course when the malfunction is bag lock, time is short, so even though you may have time to check the main is gone, if it is still attached, you don't have much time to solve the problem. Altitude awarness is vital in such a situation, pulling the reserve too low will kill you. Pulling the reserve into a bag locked main might not. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

  9. I am not quite sure how the bricks on methanphedimiens would open but I do know how the R.A.G.E. opens. I have jumped the 97 and the 86 sqft model. I have only done about 6 jumps on each, but every opening was on heading and very slow. That is despite the hole in the slider Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  10. Once decided to demo a 98 sqft canopy. I hooked it up to my rig and started packing it and noticed it was a bit small. I checked the label and saw it was a 78 sqft I unhooked it and got the 98 sqft model. Packed it and jumped. It opened and went into a wild spin that I was just barely able to hold straight by countering with a rear riser. I could not see any popped brakes so I chopped. When we recovered the main we discovered it was .... Yes, the 78 sqft version Lesson learned, check what you hook up to your rig is what you think it is. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

  13. - Did a demo jump from just under 1500 ft. We never got high enough to activate cypres. Pulled the main, a vengeance 120. All went well but never again. - Thought I could do 180° front riser hooks at 150 jumps. Was lucky and got away with a very sore elbow. - Struggled with a bag lock due to double stowed rubber bands all the way down to 1500ft. I finally got it open by yanking the risers and managed to get out of the 6 lines twist very quickly. Should have chopped. - On my VX 99 due to a long spot, I used the rear risers to just make it back to the DZ. At 100ft I realized I had not released my brakes either. Nicely stalled the canopy landing with the risers. Sore backside for a few days. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  14. I must also be tired. Backward ground speed? Do you mean backing up under canopy? Wind > 15 mph. When wind speed is less than 30 mph you should have some forward ground speed when flying into the wind. What do I teach students about landing in high winds?   15. Just my 2 cents.... If you can't land your canopy straight in, then either you should not be flying the canopy or the canopy is a bag of shit. A list of canopies I can land straight in with no problem every time - Springo 160 Stilleto 135 Nitro 108 / 98 / 88 Blade 98 / 88 Rage (paratec ) 97 / 86 Velocity 90 / 96 Icarus VX 99 Vengeance 120 / 107 and the list goes on No prizes for guessing which is the hardest to land straight in Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
  16. I get really tired of hearing this excuse for downsizing. If the wind is too high to jump a 200+ then it is also too high to jump my velocity 90. I will back this up any time I am jumping in high winds. If I can jump my velo I can also jump the 200+. The wind speed is never a consideration in selecting the size of my canopy. When jumping smaller canopies, forward speed in full flight does not vary that much, it's the sink rate that changes dramatically. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

  22. How far can a canopy fly in 1 minute? I think .5 of mile if it flies in a straight line. How long does it take for the plane to turn around 180 with a .5 mile offset? Our pilot said He could do it in a minute. How far has someone tracked after the previous 8 way seperated? Sorry, but it all seems to risky to me. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
