  3. QuoteI absolutely think everyone should take resposibililty for their actions and try to talk to ANYONE else that they see doing something dangerous. If you are not comfortable talking to the individual yourself, get the S&TA or DZO or another respected jumper at the DZ involved. If you don't feel you have the jump numbers or experience to address it, talk to someone who does. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The problem here is not the person or persons being spoken to or not. The problem lies in the fact that said persons have no interest in learning or taking constructive criticism, nor do they think they've done anything wrong. This was the point of my original post. We can all beg, plead cajole or scream until we are blue in the face, but it gets us nowhere if those involved have no desire to learn. It basically boils down to the 100 jump wonder syndrome. " I have 100 jumps, I know everything" " I have 500 jumps, I know everything" " I have 1,000 jumps, I know everything" " I have ( insert number here), I know everything" You get my point............. NOT FUCKING GOOD ENOUGH! This is an extreme sport full of huge egos. We really need to try and level ourselves and try to see past that ego in order to grow , learn and remain safe skydivers.Whether we have a hundred jumps or 10,000 jumps, we all still have plenty to learn. Pay attention guys, the reaper always watches you. NEVER FORGET THAT! Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
  4. I don't have this problem. My gear stays well maintained as I use it to jump from in-flight aircraft. I guess I'm funny like that.......... Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
  5. Over the past few years I have started to notice an alarming trend. Although I'm sure this has been going on since the dawn of skydiving, it seems that the blame game has become more and more prevalent in this sport. Several weeks ago, myself and another instructor witnessed an incident that could have easily resulted in the death of the skydiver involved. This was one of the cases where the jumper did everything wrong, but still lived. It happens, I'm aware of that. a few weeks later, the same jumper, made a very bad decision very low to the ground, and once again, emerged virtually unscathed. We all know that jumpers make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes will kill or maim. Unfortunately, if we are in denial about those mistakes, we cannot learn from them so as not to make them again. In both cases, the jumper in question was in complete denial as to the actual events that transpired. Not only was he in denial, he went as far as to make up excuses for the incidents and try to pass them off as the truth to the people (with many thousands of jumps and years of experience) who witnessed both events! The point I'm trying to make here is that we all have to take responsibility for ourselves, not just in skydiving, but in all aspects of life. We also need to try and learn from those around us, especially when they are by far more experienced than you. We need to understand that for the most part, those with that experience are only trying to help keep others alive. Skydiving is not the place to try and be Chuck Norris. You can't learn everything all by yourself. It took many years of trial and error, and more blood than one can possibly imagine for our sport to be where it is today. This message I suppose is really directed at the newer jumpers, but it holds true whether you have 2 jumps or 20,000. If the people around you are telling you that what you are doing is going to get you hurt, then you should at least give them a listen. If you've made seriously stupid mistakes, trying to make excuses and covering them up is not going to get you anywhere but ridiculed. It will more than likely get you killed eventually because your mindset is not one of learning and growing, but of ignorance and regression. Please try and take responsibility for yourself. By learning from your mistakes and others, you can become a responsible, safe skydiver. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
  6. I still jump a 120 jedi to this day. I had been jumping a Velo 103 but it needs a lineset and I can't trust the openings. This is the second Jedi I've owned and I love them both. I get very nice openings, if a little off heading. I call them panoramic openings as I get a 360 degree view before I can unstow my brakes. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
  7. Actually, I thought it was quite beautiful. I'd like to see the end result though as I'm sure that it won't be as nice after the scar tissue builds up. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
  8. It also depends on what you are looking for in a DZ. Some DZs tend to roll up the sidewalks at sunset. Next month starts the season so if you are looking for night life I would go to Z-Hills. Halloween kicks it off and it's all downhill from there. Bring your snorkels folks! You don't want to drown in the beer! Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
  9. QuoteIf the container is open ie I have pulled the drouge release then its cutaway and pull the reserve ... If the contaniner is closed then its pull the reserve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This sort of sums it up. In the original incident the drogue bridle breaks when the ripcord is pulled. On a Strong system ( all I'm familiar with ) This would lead to an open container and the bag probably bouncing around on my back. I would hesitate to simply fire my reserve into what would more than likely be a snarled mess on my back. That being said, I check my gear before every jump, the packers do a very good job of inspecting gear between inspection/maintenence cycles, and we adhere to those maintenence cycles. Some of our gear is well used, but is also well maintained. I do not and will not jump ghetto gear. It's just not worth the $30. The original incident more than likely occured because of poorly maintained gear and a lack of gear checks. One of the other posters noted the lack of handles check during freefall. I also took note of that. I agree that it shows a lack of respect for the gear and the skydive in general. I check my gear on every jump. It's keeps me alive. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

  19. When the Stiletto was introduced you had to have 500 jumps and sign a waiver with P.D. in order to jump it. That canopy is no different now than it was then. The only thing that has changed is the mindset of the average jumper. I would be willing to bet that if you get on a Stiletto 120 with 100 jumps you will be dead before you reach your next birthday. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
  20. 23. QuoteWhat is the real purpose of a coach, when a coach cannot sign a proficiency card...!!! The student has to repeat everything over to an instructor, doubling the number of jumps and time required to get a license. It is nice to practice with someone, but that someone should be an instructor. Based on personal experience..... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UUUMMMMM NO, that's not how it works and Talon 1206; you should check your students gear a little more thoroughly. His jumpsuit is half open and his riser covers are flopping in the breeze. Just a suggestion.....
  24. HHHMMMMMMM...........funny that, I was at Z-hills all weekend and didn't here a thing about this incident. I did however here this crazy story about some drunken old guy getting beat up by the manifest girls. Evidently when they pulled his hand from the paper shredder it was in pretty bad shape.......... Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
  25. there is no way to cut away your reserve. you could attempt to use your hook knife, but I doubt seriously you would actually get it done once tension released from one side. check your gear and that won't happen to you. On a side note, you should really sit dowwn with your rigger and learn your gear. It may save your life some day..... Play stupid games, win stupid prizes!
