9/11 education in the public schools.
rocketdog replied to lisamariewillbe's topic in Speakers Corner
being 7 & in second grade, i would guess this is more appropriate than the teacher stating the same points to a 13+ year old. not that kids @ 7 are stupid, but they are more malleable. probably the teacher was simplifying things just to avoid any one viewpoint because, as a teacher, 1) you don't want to piss off parents when a child repeats/misinterprets what the teacher said 2) those are emotional, complex issues that should be discussed w/ family. basically, the teacher might have been trying to move on to another topic. i HOPE that's why the teacher summed it up the way s/he did.... ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com -
100% -- 9/11/01/ should NOT be a holiday because it will not make America any safer or change its current course. so i don't see a logical (different from emotional) point. "I'll wager those who say dont need 'another day off' probably arent working very hard when they are there.... " it's not about work ethic. it's a moral dilemma. regardless of whether people bust ass or are slackers, the idea is we SHOULD be grateful 365 days a year for the freedom & safety we have. personally, i don't need a day off to remember our blessings & failures. ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

something i hadn't necessarily considered: i asked a co-worker the same question & she said it SHOULD NOT be because "it's a sad day that should have been prevented." basically, we failed our own citizens. never thought of that! ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

...which is absolutely odd to me! (see my myspace blog above, although it's hard to follow) in my mind, patriotism isn't about a holiday or having magnetic ribbons on your car. it's an ideal that HAS to permeate your thoughts & actions, every day of the year, not just on September 11th. ~hollywood EDIT: when i made this poll i didn't mean OBSERVING or REMEMBERING 9/11/01, i meant should it be a national day where gov. offices are closed/schools are off/etc. i think a few are missing the difference... see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

i agree-- so where are the (currently) 4 people who voted "yes"? SPEAK UP! see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

this thread is self-explanatory & i WILL offer my personal views later.... just not right now (i'm @ work, gotta be quick)! every one on the radio yesterday believed September 11th should be an observed, national holiday. i don't. i asked the office girls & they all believe that it should ?! i also blogged this on my MySpace (don't have a direct link) http://www.myspace.com/asianyumyum it goes off on a tangent, but you get my view... trying to make sense of it all? thoughts? ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

Side-By-Side:Do you induce a downplane and cut away?
rocketdog replied to onlyood's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
although i might react differently if IN the actual situation: don't fix it if it ain't broke! if you can give riser input & it's a stable side-by-side, why mess with it? no one's answering my questions posted earlier though ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com -
maybe not the license itself. to do a night jump, i think 50 jumps is an acceptable answer.... but keep this in mind.... i went to the Marco Island boogie a few years ago where only a B was required, but landings were on the beach in a marked area. @ the time i had 200+ jumps/B-license and STILL didn't feel comfortable hitting such a small landing area. could i have hit the landing area? probably. do i think someone with 50 jumps could have? doubtful (and the only outs were the Gulf or hotels!) ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

Repack week old pack for night jump?
rocketdog replied to jacketsdb23's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i voted "YES" -- repack it. it's worth repacking it to save you all the worry, possibly save your life, and/or save you the $ if you were to cutaway. an extra 15 min. on the ground can save you ________ during the skydive! have an awesome night jump! ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com -
Side-By-Side:Do you induce a downplane and cut away?
rocketdog replied to onlyood's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
sort of on the same note: which canopy do you grab to induce the downplace? * the canopy on right (that way you can cutaway with your free left hand)? * the reserve? * the main? (i think of my arm getting caught ) how do you know? what would you do/have done? this scenario has always perplexed me ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com -

i believe it's always been $5-$10 more on-site..... certainly not more than $10 though! plus, it saves you some time/hassle @ registration. instead of filling out all the paperwork/paying/buying tickets, you can just present rig & reserve card. you should go!

just IMHO... how skydiving helps real life
rocketdog replied to Mike111's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
"Jokes aside, skydiving does very little for us in real life other than have people think we are odd, at best, or dangerous, at worst." like a lot of people here, i disagree, but to each their own. for me, it is a BIG reality check. it has taught me to value those i love because at any given second i (or they) could go. it has taught me to be humble, compassionate, supportive & to be assertive in some situations (i.e. saying "no" to a zoo dive)..... and while the outsiders think it's crazy, sometimes i wonder if those know how blessed they are?! ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com -
i'm sure others have requested this, BUT can you post funeral arrangements and/or calling hours (wake, the viewing, whatever you call it!) as soon as anyone knows? i'm assuming it's sometime this week or weekend?! thanks so much ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

dude you SO need to send that in to Jay Leno's "Headlines" see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

it's not screwing up the thread. it's called a REALITY CHECK. don't tell me you make oodles of $ being a teacher? and yes, as i said in my post, there are better payoffs than actual money. ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

i agree 100%. there really is no better way to get a feel for it. you could start off by just volunteering to tutor kids in the hall 1 day a week or observing during class. teaching is definitely NOT for everyone. but here are a few thought-stirrers to teaching: * why else are we put on this Earth, if not to somehow improve the quality of life for others after? * the great thing about teaching is you never know where your influence stops * the pay is incredibly shitty, but teachers get paid when they go to Heaven * give a man a fish- he eats for a day. teach a man to fish- he eats for a lifetime. (Chinese proverb) best of luck deciding! ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

last time i checked, illegal still meant ILLEGAL. law-abiding = bologna! why does the US government MAKE immigration laws if we're not going to uphold them? what is the point of the $ we put out for border patrol if we're going to let them all come anyway?! i find it hard to believe that a lot of them want to become American citizens. i think it's more like they want in on American $ (which is understandable). yet it pisses me off that they want these rights/policies when they will not assimilate with American culture (you know they've been in the states more than 1 year, yet still no need to speak English or pay taxes like everyone else?). a rule is a rule is a rule. if you make an exception for one & you have to make the exception for all -- can of worms! ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

Would you pay to watch a Swoop Competition?
rocketdog replied to dsbbreck's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i agree, i think it's like exploiting your TRUE fans -- the skydivers who understand the difficulty & risk of swooping. i voted NO because EVERY PERSON who gets on a load will come down (some just do it w/ better precision & creativity)...... why should people pay to see what will happen inevitably? ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com -
a friend of mine actually is IN the Peace Corp right now. keep in mind it is a 2 year contract (i think if you like it, you can only petition to work there an additional year). it was a long application process & hard for him to get in, but not if your degree is in Education or Medical/Nursing. i believe they pay you a base rate & provide housing. then, after your contract is up, they give you a chunk of cash (i wanna say like $7,000?!) -- i could be wrong though! on the other hand, i know a girl who taught abroad in Japan and had the best time of her life.... their education system is WAY different than here. GOOD LUCK! ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com

What are your thoughts on Pilatus Porter aircraft?
rocketdog replied to McDirt's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
well not really, there was a bench on the back wall (closest to the tail). 2 barely fit due to rigs on our back, but if we had to fit 8 people, we'd SOMEHOW cram 3 on the pseudo-bench. the rest were on the floor & 1 in the copilot seat (turned around). make sense? anyway, if you even had to put 7 hefty people in, it was a squeeze. but don't get me wrong, it was an efficient ride to do larger and small formations out of..... ~hollywood see the world! http://gorocketdog.blogspot.com
