Magnetic slider stops// Hand tack slider to canopy
grasshopper replied to N24's topic in Gear and Rigging
There is a major canopy manufacture currently experimenting with small plastic snaps on the slider. Other than a slight hassle packing, the feedback seems to range from no difference to better openings. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline -
I still pack the same way I learned. I don't skip any steps, and I can pack in under 4 minutes, and still have dependable openings. All it takes is practice, lots and lots of practice. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline

What manual are you looking at? John Leblanc has told me that PD recommends you do NOT push the nose in. The last time I've looked at the manual, it said the same thing, but that was a couple of years ago. Personally, I do nothing to the nose on sabres, quarter the slider and nothing more. I don't get many complaints on sabres, and I've packed many. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline

what winds for 1st time when downsizing?
grasshopper replied to countzero's topic in Safety and Training
My vote is for no winds. That way, you won't find yourself turning low to try to land into the wind if things don't go as planned. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline -

It's about time. Congratulations, and sorry I couldn't be there. But my real question remains: How was the rattlesnake whiskey? ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline

I will go with John Sherman's opinion before yours any day. Non reinforced risers - not sure what the hell you are talking about here. Bottom line is all the main manufacturers offer freefly friendly rigs. It comes down to personal preference. How's the pd126r I sold to you working out? rm And I will go with people like Bill Booth, and the majority of manufacturers who don't use rubber bands on freebags. I know a lot of people like to quote MIL spec rubber bands are designed to break, but when I read the spec's I couldn't find anywhere that said breaking strength (feel free to point it out if I am wrong). http://www.keenerrubber.com/mil_specs_.htm As for reinforced mini-risers, you know that piece of red webbing sandwiched in the riser where the larger ring sits? Last I checked, JS doesn't use that, claiming their risers don't need it. Also, at least 2 sets of risers I own were deemed bad based on the Relative Workshops standards. I never said Racers were not freefly friendly, but many others will. Like I said, I liked my racers. To be honest, the only reason I sold them was because I had a hard time finding local riggers who made them look good on R&Is. I was happy with the 126, never deployed it, and I have since sold it. Then again, this whole post was a waste because the original poster only asked about voodoos and mirages, not racers. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline

Whats up, Jarrett. Yes, I remember you and your dad (how could I forget someone who saved my life at least once, maybe twice?). I have had 2 racers, and while I liked jumping them, I never could recommend them to anyone else, due to higher maintanence and lack of resale value. I've also had problems with jump shack as a company. My point wasn't to bash JS, but they have a lot of hypocrisy on their site (e.g. thier stance on tuck tabs) and some things I think are outright dangerous (rubber bands on reserves, non-reinforced mini-risers). Also thier position on "fail safe harness" is a joke. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline

It looks like you are buying into the manufacturers hype. Just because the people trying to sell you something say it, it doesn't make it true. I'd recommend you don't look at jump shacks website, because then you will believe all rigs other than a racer are unsafe. To answer the question, I like Mirage a lot. I think Voodoos (doodoos) are adequate, but ugly (not just the design, but wrinkles when packed) and the riser covers have a nasty habit of opeing on many of them. I've heard rumor Sandy considers the voodoo a step in the evolution towards the Talon FS. I like the FS much more than the voodoo, even for freeflying. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline

I heard a rumor it is is possible to fly to salt lake city and connect to twin falls airport. If that is true it would be a 15 minute drive to the bridge, and in some cases cheaper than flying to salt lake. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline

I don't think anyone mentioned the aristocrats yet, and it has my vote. After the first 10 minutes, I got bored and started doing other things with it on. After about 30 minutes, it was sucking so bad I had to turn it off, and I wasn't even watching it. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline

She doesn't need a spare room, room in your bed will suffice. Beware though, she isn't kidding when she says she won't clean, and she might rip you off. Skydivers over San Francisco Bay right now?!?!
grasshopper replied to flyinghonu's topic in The Bonfire
Why would someone assume it is unauthorized just because it is unusual? I'd bet money it was Joe Jennings/ Carl Nespoli (Sp?) related, seeing as how they were going up there this week for filming. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline -
Does anyone ever pull their reserve before repack?
grasshopper replied to Tenshi's topic in Safety and Training
Not just a valid concern, but a legal issue as well. Here's FAR 65.129(f)(1): "No certificated parachute rigger may exercise the privileges of his certificate and type rating unless he has performed duties under his certificate for at least 90 days within the preceding 12 months." Packing your own main parachute does not require exercising the privileges of a rigger certificate, so it's unlikely a "I just pack my own rigs" rigger could stay current enough to legally pack any rigs at all. The libertarian in me says as long as you're doing only your own rigs, there's no harm. Mark While I agree a rigger will be better if they are current, the law makes little sense. For example, if I am uncurrent, to get recurrent I'd pack under supervision. So I'd be current, but not exercised my privileges 90 days out of the last year. Lucky for me, packing other peoples mains keeps me legally current ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline -

I'm with you on this. When alcoholics are in recovery, do they get to drink on special occasions? They don't get to say it's okay this one time because it's boxing day. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline

Do everything right ... still die?
grasshopper replied to Praetorian's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Thank you for setting JP straight on the James Martin incident. If you look around, it is more common than you think. I know of more than one professional packer who does this, as well as many wingsuit fliers. The only manufacture that I am aware of to aprove this is wings, but there may be others. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline -

grasshopper replied to Praetorian's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
#1 the best way to pack is according to what the maunal says. Agreed, even though I am occasionally guilty of deviating from the instructions. #2. Centarus packed the same way long time ago, lines up. I've never had my hands on a centaurus, so I have no opinion. I did check the voodoo instructions online, and they made no mention of doing it this way, so I edited my post so no one would do that because of what I wrote. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline -

Interesting theory. Where did you hear that? People who were there had never heard that. Also, as someone who was jumping racers in the area at the time, and packing them, I'd never seen that. Not that there were many racers in the area anyway. BTW, the only time I have heard of anyone packing lines up was on a Voodoo when they first came out. I was told the manual said it was acceptable, but the current manual doesn't say anything about it. If you do this, it is not IAW the manufactors instructions. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline -
What out-of-the-ordinary things do you do for safety?
grasshopper replied to a topic in Safety and Training
I just don't see where using a packer makes a person safer. Who do you think can pack more reliably, a person with 100 pack jobs or someone with 1000's. ________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline -
